Hi kdmarvin;

You are using an expired version of Hijack This. First, please delete the version you are using, then download then new version from here:

http://radiosplace.com

Next:

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…://my.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…://my.yahoo.com

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Please use the following link to download, update, configure and run Ad-Aware se.
Install and how to use Ad-aware SE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

Next:

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

  7. Reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread along with the EWIDO SCAN, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

    Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log.

    Please remember to re-enable MS Anti-Spywares real time protection.
I have never used forums before so I may not be doing this correctly. I will improve I hope.

Hi kdmarvin;

The ewido scan looks good. However, you are still using an outdated version of Hijack This and we need the updated version that will reveal much more about what is going on inside your PC.

First, please delete the old version of Hijack This.

Then download the new version from here.
http://radiosplace.com

Then, please run HJT, copy the log and post it here, in this string, using the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified. :thumbup:
Thank you so much for your help. Kirk

Hi kdmarvin;

You're welcome.

It may also be necessary to temporarily disable CounterSpy. I'm not sure about the exact procedure, but look in your systems tray for the ICON, right click on it and select disable.

AD-AWARES AD-WATCH IS RUNNING.
You have ad-aware's ad-watch running on your computer and that is good.
But prior to doing the fix below with hijackthis it needs to be turned off.
Please do the following.

Open AdAware Se.
Click the Ad-Watch icon on the top of the screen.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you can see two checkable items called Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck those boxes.

Remember when we have completed cleaning your machine to turn it back on.

If all the above is not done, they could prevent us from making the changes necessary, even up to and including the removal of Viruses and other parasites.
Please be sure to re-enable them when you have finished.

Next:

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Next:

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…://my.yahoo.com

The following are OPTIONAL fixes:

This 04 entry can be started manually if needed and is not necessary at startup. Your decision to do so.

O4 - Startup: Stickies.lnk = C:\Program Files\stickies\stickies.exe

There is a good deal of controversy about Weatherbug. It has been reported that it is now safe to use. Again, it is your option. Please note that if fixed here, it should also be Uninstalled/Removed in Add/Remove Programs, in Control Panel.

O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\WINNT\System32\shdocvw.dll (HKCU)

There is also controversy surrounding Incredimail. If you seem to be having no problems with it, then keep it.

O16 - DPF: {F00F4763-7355-4725-82F7-0DA94A256D46} (IncrediMail) - http://www5.incredimail.com/contents/setup…p1/imloader.cab

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log.
I believe I need a little help on using spyware programs. I just realized that I was the cause of the Yahoo RO……… to keep returning. A Lavasoft window would open and ask if I wished to accept or block a change to the registry and I was blocking thinking it was trying to load again. Then when I ran a new HJT scan I saw it had returned. I checked, clicked fix, and rebooted to find it is now gone. That is my mistake and I'm sorry if it was a source of annoyance. I do believe those windows could be made a little more clear for those of us who are struggling along.
Thanks again, Kirk

P.S. I have found Incredimail and WeatherBug resource hogs and very difficult to get rid of.

Hi kdmarvin;

Right, Ad-Awares Ad Watch will do just as you said and prevent us from making the necessary changes. However, it is not the only program that will do that and the list grows longer and longer. I agree with you 100% that the instructions should be much clearer. It also does not help at all that everything about a PC has a dozen different names, or how it is referred to.
Please, don't get me started on that, or we will never get anything done.

Have a look in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and see if Incredimail and Weatherbug are hiding there. If so, you know what to do.

Also, do an "All Files" search for both.

First, Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

When you are finished, be sure to reverse the "Show hidden files" routine.

It has been my experience that Incredimail infests all users profiles and needs to be removed everywhere it is found, to be fully rid of it. It is horribly invasive.

Congratulations, your Hijack This log is clear.

Protection Recommendations:

If you dont have these three FREE programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system, but only one of each.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
Thank you for all your help, I would never have found all the remainig (9) hidden files for Wxbug or Incredimail. I have learned a lesson here. If I may ask one more favor. I have Norton installed on my computer and have always thought it to be very large program that seems to be everywhere on my system. I do run the maintainance programs at least once a week although I don't really know if they do as promised or not. I think it makes me feel as though I am doing the right thing. My question; What anti-virus program do you recommend and if I were to leave the Symantec fold, where would I find the tools to check my system and keep it running smoothly? I hate to be recundent but THANK YOU for your help. Kirk
You're welcome. It has been a pleasure to work with you. Anti-Virus programs and firewalls seem to be very personal things to some. I've seen arguments break out over the superiority of one over another. To me they are just basic tools, that should do the job for which they are designed. If you should decide to leave Norton, I would recommend that you pick up some free tools first, until you decide you need something with more bells and whistles. Zone Alarm makes the best free firewall I know of. The same is true for AVG, the best free Anti-Virus I'm aware of. Ask someone else and they may say something else, but these are free and will do just fine, until you become more sophisticated in your needs. Just download them and get off the Internet totally. If you have cable or DSL, unhook the cables from the carrier. Then Uninstall/Remove Nortons in Add/Remove Programs and do an All Files search for any remnants. Then, install Zone Alarm and AVG before hooking back up the Internet. If you go onto the Internet even for a few minuets unprotected, you'll be covered up with trash and parasites. The very best advice I can give, has already been given. Have a look at my last post and you will see everything I recommend to keep you safe. Everything in red and Tony Kleins advice, in blue, will be sufficient. That's all I've ever had a need for. Of course others here will offer more detailed advice and you'll find that usually in their last post in a string. It is well worth your time to read some of those. The advice is usually the best you will find anywhere. Keeping everything updated regularly, is essential. Even the he best program available is almost useless, if it does not have the latest updates. Stay safe. :wavey:
