I ran Spysubtract/CWShredder and Ad-Aware, then I rebooted. The blanksearch screen came up again after just a minute or so of browsing. I haven't yet seen coolsearch or bettersearch again, but I don't know if they're gone. Thanks for any help!
Hello richland and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
Go here and follow the instructions on removal for TvMedia. Reboot when finished removing.

Step 2
Please download the trial version of Ewido security suite.

Install and Update Ewido:
  • Download and install Ewido security suite.
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
    • The program will prompt you to update, click the OK button.
    • The program will now go to the main screen.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Click on Start.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed, close the program.
Scanning With Ewido:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
  • Launch Ewido again.
  • Click on scanner.
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
[*]Click on Start Scan.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK.

[*]Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report to your desktop.

[*]Reboot the computer to finish the removal process.

Step 3
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include the Ewido scan log. Please turn off Word Wrap in notepad before replying. (In Notepad, Click Format and uncheck Word Wrap.)
I downloaded the TV Media removal tool, but when I ran it, it said, TV Media Not Installed.

Next I ran the ewido program in safe mode. However 3 times in a row, my computer crashed at exactly 50%. So, finally, I ran it in regular mode, where it worked without crashing. After that, I tried in safe mode again, but it crashed at the same place. So, this scan log is NOT from safe mode. I hope you can still help me.

Thanks again.

Some fairly serious complications –

I can't get Internet Explorer to connect to any sites. And Netscape, which I'm using now, basically has no formatting. For example, to the left as I type this it says, "smilie, smilie, smilie" but there are no smilie faces. And all the colors are limited to shades of blue and grey.

Also, I have never been able to get rid of

mad.dll

in either normal mode or safe mode.

Please help! Thanks.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mad.dll

Check the option for "Delete on Reboot". Click the button with the red circle with a white X in it. Click 'yes'. When asked to reboot choose 'yes'.
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Lets see if we can do a repair on Internet Explorer.

Follow the instructions at this site: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Repair_Inte…er_60-t251.html

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Hi. Thanks for your help.

I eventually had to revert to an earlier setting with system restore, because my computer started crashing outright with bluescreens, memory dumps, etc.

As a result, I think I need to start from scratch with the process.

Incidentally, even with Killbox, I was unable to delete mad.dll.

This is a new hijack-this log – if I just need to repeat the steps you have already given me earlier in the thread, let me know. But if you see anything new and you could point it out, that would be great. Again, thanks a lot for your help.

I'll give the full fix now except for the mad.dll. That will take another program to remove as it is being very stubborn. :(

Do you have the Windows XP disks for your computer?

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://static.vpptechnologies.com/playfuls…landing.html?s=

O2 - BHO: BHO Class - {CBEFB350-ED5B-4115-B846-C1041676B388} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\CustIE32.dll

O3 - Toolbar: ReGet Bar - {17939A30-18E2-471E-9D3A-56DD725F1215} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [I0wTi] c:\documents and settings\me\local settings\temp\I0wTi.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [gw33RTjqP] lsaru1.exe

O16 - DPF: {99802379-7362-40E2-9D28-8A3B9AF880B7} - http://hotsearchbar.com/toolbar2/winhot32.cab
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.0_03) -

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\nlagulhw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\kjberup.exe

c:\program files\180solutions << Whole Folder

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

rsnmm.exe
lsaru1.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Run ccleaner to clean the temp files.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
I have looked for my XP discs but can't find them (if I ever had them). Here is the new log. Thanks.

Click here to download and install Registrar Lite.

Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
Run Reglite, and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane. And look in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane.
The value should contain C:\Windows\System32\mad.dll.

IF "mad.dll' is NOT in the 'Value' box, STOP here, and let me know.

Close that "new pane".
Right-click on the Windows key in the left pane and rename it to Windows2. Then double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane once more.
Then erase the data in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane.
Click 'Apply' and 'Ok' to set.
Right-click on the Windows2 key in the left pane and rename it back to Windows.
Close Reglite.

Reboot normally and post a fresh HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.
Here is the new log. It looks like the mad.dll is finally gone. But there's something else I noticed. Even though the microsoft tool says TV Media is not installed, I've been finding and manually deleting a

C:\Program Files\TV Media folder with TvmBho.dll in it.

It repeatedly shows up again even after I delete it. Is this a problem?

Thanks again.

Your new log appears clean. :)

Delete the following file:
C:\Windows\System32\mad.dll

Let's run the following scans to see if they find anything.

Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version (Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06, Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4), than run scans as described below.

Scanning With Spybot S&D;:
  • Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D; accepting the Default Settings.
  • In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
  • Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D.
  • Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.
  • Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’
  • When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window.
  • Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
  • Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
  • REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.
  • Do not enable Tea Timer until the log is clean as it will prevent the fix from working.
Scanning With Ad-Aware SE:

Logs looks good.

I'll give you one optional fix in HijackThis and some recommendations to help keep the computer clean.

This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some experts think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it with HijackThis.
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
