B) Thanks
Hi Candace, Good job, as usual

Let's go after this bug again.

1. Make sure EWIDO's definitions are current.

2. If you deleted this file, please download Nailfix from here:

http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?dow…050515010747824

. Click on Spyware Utilities
. Chose Nail/Aurora Fix

Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

3. Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

A. Restart your computer
B. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
C. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
D. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

4. Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

5. Now run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

6. Run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINNT\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINNT\systb.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mahmnqo] c:\winnt\system32\ygguvk.exe r

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

7. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following files/folders (and all their content), if they are present:

c:\winnt\system32\ygguvk.exe
C:\WINNT\Nail.exe
C:\WINNT\systb.dll

8. Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Candace, First let me say that you did an excellent job as usual. I would also add, in closing, that it was a real pleasure working with you. I appreciated your eagerness and your trust. I will be closing this thread soon but please follow the following instructions and, tell me how many times you had to use killbox on Nail.exe. The first variant used to go in one go, some go with 2 passes with EWIDO in Safe Mode, others have to be whittled down. This is not just applying a formula and Presto everything is fixed the first time around. I just came across the requirement of killing the 023 first a couple of days ago. It looks as if I may as well start off with it first. Were the instructions clear enough to delete the Bad Added Service? I just put that together the other day because a lot of victims (That is what we call you guys) had trouble following the more complex directions. Your input on those 2 questions would help me alot.

Take care,

Paul

I will not close your thread right away, try your system for a day or so and then please send me a log for a final check, just to make sure. If I can ever be of service again, yu know where to find me.

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Remember to reactivate MS Anti-Spyware

Regards,

Trevuren
Trevuren, Thank you so much for all of your help I really appreciate it. Thank God for people like you who take the time to share their expertise. It looks like this is clean and humming along. And I will follow your recommendations with additional downloads. Thank You Again Candace, New Orleans, Louisiana USA
Hello Treverun, I would really like to help you in some way so of course I will answer your questions the best that I can. I'm not sure if I understand exactly what it is you are asking me. I used the Nailfix twice in safemode. We also cleared out many tracks through the process and each time the system would run faster. We tackled the main problem the 023 Svcprocess.exe last. I think we got the best result removing the 023 service last. If we had done the 023 first it may have cleaned out the Trojan, but the system may not have worked as nicely as it is working now. Just my opinion of what I saw. We had so many toolbars and JUNK from these free download sites. Also, Norton kept popping up with NEW Trojans, many of the files or tracks we removed with Hijack. When we "Cleared the Tracks" Were we removing files fro the IE/Temp folder? :wavey: I hope this answers your question sufficiently. If not, let me know. I am going to work on the PC tomorrow to shore up the Spyware and put in the protections that you recommend in your final post PS…. #1. Once the thread is closed will I still be able to see this thread? #2. Also, is this the standard procedure to remove a virus or malware. I mean using Nailfix and Ewido to hunt down and destroy? #3. And my third question is. Where would I go to become more familiar with how to remove these pests from computers and gain more education on the skill or REMOVAL and KILLING of Virus, Malware, Spyware pests? #4 What do you think is the best Firewall, Virus Scan, and Spyware software. The system I was working on has Norton for Virus and Zonelabs Pro. And what do you think of Anonymizer? #5 Last but not least. Why do you and people like you spend time helping people in these forums like Tom Coyote? I'm so glad that you do but am curious why? OK…. Enough of the MILLION questions. Have a great evening. Thank You Again, Candace
Questions, questions, questions,

1. When I close this thread, I will be including instructions from our Forum Administrators on how to open the thread, if required. When closed, just call up tour topic and your thread will appear but you will not be able to post to it.

2. No, the standard procedure is to use your own Antivirus system with a good firewall for prevention and free tools like Spybot and Ad-Aware. I use ALL the tools that I have recommended and most of these are standard across the different forums. Can you imagine, something for nothing.

Please delete the NailFix program as it is of no more use to you. Also beware of Killbox if you don't know what you are doing.

All our tools are infection specific for the most part. Some we use on several. These have practically all been developped by people who hate malware to help us bee workers clean up the mess.

3. There are different schools across the net where you can apply for this type of training. That is what I did. This is my home base, the School where I was trained and probably the best, in my opinion. There are others at SpywareInfo, Geeks to Go and MalwareRemoval which is headed up by my mentor.

4. If you have those two, then they are fine and just add what I recommended, update and run them regularly and try and stay away from free stuff. Then you will be fine. If you cannot afford a dedicated trojan detector and remover, you may want to try the free version of a program called A Squared. It does a very good job and it is free. That is the one that I use.

5. There are many reasons:(your choice)

a. We are crazy.
b. We don't have a life
c. We hate spyware
d. We like helping people.
c. All of the above

Take care,

Trevuren
