For the last week, I've been getting some popups on my machine. I ran scans with the most updated versions of Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and Symantec AntiVirus and evrything seemed to get cleaned off ok. I'm still getting these popups so I need some help from the experts. Here is my HJT log. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello chork, welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadQM] loadqm.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\system32\uvkvrn.exe reg_run

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

O16 - DPF: {62475759-9E84-458E-A1AB-5D2C442ADFDE} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52/200305…meInstaller.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode

Press the F8 key, when you see the Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen.

Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:

On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Do the following:

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
C:\WINNT\system32\uvkvrn.exe

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY Listed Profile USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Hi LDTate. Thanks for taking a look at this problem. I followed your steps but had a problem deleting the c:\WINNT\system32\uvkvrn.exe file. When I tried to delete it in safe mode, I got an Access is Denied error. Using KillBox, I found that uvkvrn.exe had a process running so I stopped it and was then able to delete the file. It looks like it came back though and I am still getting the same popup ads. What else do you think I can do to stop these things?

Thanks - chork

Download Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.175
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/KillBox.zip
Unzip it to your desktop

If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.
Copy these instructions into a new text document and leave it open.
Close all unnecessary program's including the Internet connection and all browsers.
Start Killbox, Lower down near the yellow triangle use the drop-down to end each rundll32.exe process.
There can be several end each of them.. use the drop-down again to end the Explorer.exe process.
Your desktop will disappear, thats OK.
Next:
Using standard file kill.(default settings).
Copy this whole list into the windows clipboard, all the Bolded below.

C:\WINNT\system32\uvkvrn.exe

Back in Killbox go > file > paste from clipboard,
Click the red highlighted X button and say yes to the prompt., wait until a success message appears.
Continue hitting the red button until all files in the list have been deleted.

Now go tools "start explorer shell".

When finished exit Killbox.

You will need to reset your quick-launch toolbar, to do that first right click on the windows taskbar,
in the context menu > toolbars > and uncheck quick-launch, repeat until all are unchecked, now you can again place a check next to it and re-arrange the windows taskbar to your preferences.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I followed all of the instructions but this thing just doesn't want to go away. What happens is everytime I open a new browser window, a popup ad opens too. Then popups will open randomly while I am using the browser.

While going through your earlier steps I discovered something else that looked out of place. There is a new process that I've never seen on this machine. It is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINNT\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\rnkn.exe

I didn't do anything with this because I couldn't find any info about it. It looks suspicious though.

Thanks for all of the time you are putting into this.

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:

Open AdAware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
I ran everything that you asked and here are the HJT and ewido reports. The system seems to be acting better now but I've only been using it for a few minutes after the scan was finished. Thanks again for all the help you've given. Please let me know if there is anything left for me to do to clean this machine.

Thanks - chork

Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

1.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > My Computer.

2.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98, on the View menu, click Folder Options.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, check Hide file extensions for known file types.

3.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98, in the Advanced Settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, unclick Show all files.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, check Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, unclick Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
LDTate - Thanks again for all the help. The machine seems to be running fine now. I've done pretty well keeping Ad-aware, SpyBot, and Symantec up-to-date so it was really strange to get hit with this. I will try out the other programs you mentioned and hopefully I can prevent a repeat. Thanks - chork
Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help

Peace be with you :wavey:
