Hi. Hi. My daughter has a Toshiba laptop (not sure of model) powers off almost 1/2 way thru Norton AV scan, and also Spybot S&D. Adaware works fine. I also found that her system restore does not go any earlier than 03/05. It should go back as far as 10/04 or even earlier as the motherboard was replaced around then. But it looks like she got hit with something around 03/05. Everything seems to work just fine EXCEPT it shuts off during any Norton AV scans or Adaware scans. Spybot will complete scan, but finds nothing. Another thing, everytime it boots up, windows security complains about firewall being turned off. Something keeps turning it off!?! OS is Win XP home. What do I start looking for? I can't complete any AV scans!
First step is to try an anti virus scan in safe mode (tap f8 while bios loads).

Then download hijackthis from the link below. Save it to its own folder then close all browser windows and click on scan. It will produce a log, copy and paste the log into this thread by clicking on "add reply" at the bottom right.

Hi and thanks. OK, did that. Adaware, spybot, and Norton 2005AV all shutdown somewhere in their scans, even in safe mode.
(edited to add symptoms)
Repeatable symptoms: Every reboot Win XP firewall is turned off, and security refuses to recognize up to date Norton AV 2005. Must turn it on manually evertime.

I have the HJT file here.
