:( My computer keeps on freezing up on me. I ran McAfee, Spybot, ad-aware, Spysweeper and have spywareblaster installed. I tried to run Trend Micro house calls on-line scan and Panda active scan but both failed to complete.

Hello faith_n_missouri, welcome to the TC.


I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:9022

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [KB891711] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Lets look at what's in the startup.

click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key.
look in the Startup. Uncheck KB891711.


After you uncheck it, you'll be using Selective startup.
When you see the box popup that tells you that, just put a Check in the Box to not show that when you startup. That's how I run mine.


Empty Recycle Bin



You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Open Misc Tools> Pull the side bar down> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature and remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.

Also please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi LDTate,
Done as requested and everything went well.
Computer is still a "little" sluggish.
But much better than before. Normally when I reboot it goes to
Restore active desktop, it did not this time. :D

Hi Again,

I ran into so troubles in this process.

First:
I was able to fix checked on the first 6 you suggested. But had the computer freeze up twice. Then done these 6 alone.

Then when I put a check next to all the 016's. My computer would auto reboot.
I then went in and put a check next to them individually. Was able to fix all but,
016 MSN Photo Uploader- it then went to a blue screen that read:
Windows Protection error. You need to Restart your computer.
System Halted.

I rebooted and Mcafee had to be reinstalled, had missing files.

Open HJT to make a new Log, Mcafee found W32/Generic.worm!p2p and deleted HTJ.

Went Online to http://cleanup.stevengould.org/, wouldnt let me access the page.

downloaded HJT again, only for Mcafee to delete it again with the W32/Generic.worm!p2p

I am getting ready to update my Mcafee and run a full scan.

Any idea's would be appreciated

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. When done, scan again with MWAV and post a new log.

Hello LDTate,

I downloaded and ran RegSeeker.
It ran 3 times /W 3 sets of Back-ups
I had to go into backup later when I wasnt able to open my E-mail in MSN browser.
It asked me what program I wanted to use. I re-added the 1st set, HKEY Classes_Root and was again able to open my mail. There was over 600 reg. If I knew which one was my mail, i could uncheck that one????

Anyway, I was able to download HJT, and have a new log for you.

What does MWAV stand for?

That could be a number of things including a Modem, anti-virus scan program etc. You can always use Google and see what you find.

Instead of Regseeker lets try this:

  • Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and install.
  • Open CCleaner.
  • Place a check by everything in the Applications tab.
  • Place a check by Internet Explorer, Windows explorer, and System in the Windows tab.
  • Hit the button that says Run CCleaner
  • Reboot to remove index.dat files.
Important:
1.Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".

2.if user is running Firefox: ,then click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".

3.Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.


How do I restore registry backups?

Right-click on the .REG file created and select 'Merge'.
By default these files will be saved into your 'My Documents' folder

Do the following:
In Windows, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, check Hide file extensions for known file types.

Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, uncheck Show hidden files and folders.

Click Apply.
Click OK.

To disable Windows Me System Restore
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.

On the Performance tab click File System.

Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore.

Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.


Now enable.

To enable Windows Me System Restore
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Performance tab click File System.
On the Troubleshooting tab, uncheck Disable System Restore.
Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.


If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.
