I can't explain what's happening

One day i just happened upon this really nasty error/virus thing and i was able to stave it off with ad-aware, spybot, avg, and cwshredder (all in their latest versions) but there's still some things in my comp. that won't go away like:

- a folder called "1111" appearing in my favorites

- searchbars and spysubtracts self-installing in my system

- some words in any website i visit becoming green links instead
(i.e. in this page http://tomcoyote.org the words "browser" and "hijacker" in the 2nd paragraph are in green text and when you highlight your mouse over them pop-ups appear)

Here's my HJT log:

Please help me.

Thank you in advance.
Hi Schuld, Welcome to the TomCoyote Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Please run the Housecall online virus scan located at:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Follow the prompts to scan your hard drive for viruses. Select the "Autoclean" option so that Housecall will remove any viruses from your system.
When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

2. Then please run the Panda scan here:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/acti…n_principal.htm
Choose to "Disinfect automatically," and follow the prompts. Delete any viruses found, and restart your computer.

3. Finally download and run a free trial version of an anti-trojan program called Trojan Hunter: Trojan Hunter .

Let it scan your whole system and remove anything it finds.

REBOOT
your system.

4. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren
okay, i got to get some trojans off and i'm happy to say that my homepage didn't change when i got on again but i some of the things are still not fixed.

I'd also like to say that i'm happy with how the forums are now. Before, i had to wait like, 3 days. I really wasn't expecting any replies on the same day i posted.

Anyway, here's my log:

There are a couple of malicious Running Services that we must STOP, DISABLE and DELETE next:

1. First to get rid of a malicious 023 item (Running Service)

O23 - Service: Windows System Uninstaller (HackerDefender100) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\winunins.exe (file missing)

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

Service: Windows System Uninstaller (HackerDefender100)

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

3. Now we need to work from the Command Prompt

Go Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Command Prompt

. A black box will appear with a flashing cursor. At the cursor, type cd.. then cd.. again and repeat the procedure until the writing preceeding the cursor says C:\>

. Now carefully type the following: sc delete HackerDefender100.

. Press ENTER.

Now you can close the Command Prompt window.

4. Please download Winhelp2002's Deldomains.inf to your desktop.

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select Install

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select Install

5. A. Please download Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg by Nellie from MWR

B. Open the zip file and extract the regfile to your desktop.

C Double click Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg and allow it to merge with the registry.

D REBOOT your system.

6. Finally, run HijackThis , click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O2 - BHO: VBRunDLL Class - {197B8CA4-E215-46DD-8F33-E0544A80E5C4} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbrundll.dll

Now we must stop, disable and delete a malicious Added Service (023)

1. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

Service: Windows VisFx Components - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\sqwksvc.exe

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

2. Now, please download Service Filter from HERE to your Desktop

3. Create a new Folder on your Desktop called Service Filter.

4. Unzip the Service Filter file and extract all its content to the new folder you just created.

5. Now, RUN Service Filter.vbs, wait a couple of seconds and it will generate a report.

6. Please post that log into this thread.

Regards,

Trevuren
I couldn't stop that service you mentioned cos it was already stopped. And now, it's been disabled. Anyway, here's that report: The script did not recognize the services listed below. This does not mean that they are a problem. To copy the entire contents of this document for posting: At the top of this window click "Edit" then "Select All" Next click "Edit" again then "Copy" Now right click in the forum post box then click "Paste" ######################################## ServiceFilter 1.1 by rand1038 Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version: 5.1.2600 Jun 10, 2005 10:44:49 AM —> Begin Service Listing <— Unknown Service # 1 Service Name: IDriverT Display Name: InstallDriver Table Manager Start Mode: Manual Start Name: LocalSystem Description: Provides support for the Running Object Table for InstallShield … Service Type: Own Process Path: c:\program files\common files\installshield\driver\1050\intel 32\idrivert.exe State: Stopped Process ID: 0 Started: False Exit Code: 1077 Accept Pause: False Accept Stop: False Unknown Service #2 Service Name: SwPrv Display Name: MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Start Mode: Manual Start Name: LocalSystem Description: Manages software-based volume shadow copies taken by the Volume Shadow Copy service. Good Job. Exactly what I needed

A. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT
2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service
3. Type Windows VisFx Components in the space provided and click OK
4. The program will ask you to REBOOT — Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

B. Next using Windows Explorer, please locate and DELETE the following file:

c:\windows\sqwksvc.exe

C. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren
i got rid of the service via HJT but when i came to safe mode and tried to delete the file itself it was already deleted

Is it…over?
Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)
