My IE home page has been switched to some "warning" page directing me to click a hyperlink to download some software. I know better than to do that, but I can't seem to reset my home page through the normal internet options menu. I have posted my HJT log below. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Phillip

You appear to be running two anti-virus programs at the same time. If true, they will interfere with each other. Choose one, and disable/uninstall the other.

Since you will not be able to access this page in safe mode during this fix, please print these instructions now, or save them to your desktop using WordPad, to help keep track of the steps.

1 – Download a stand-alone version of CWShredder. After you download the program, unzip it into a directory.

Make sure all browser windows are closed and run cwshredder.exe to start the program and click on the FIX button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

2 – To start, follow this link for instructions to enable 'show all files' for your system.

3 – After checking yourself against the following instructions, run AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy:

Please see How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software.

Please see How to use Spybot to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software, which may catch things that Ad-Aware misses.

Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

4 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://shdocpa.dll/blank.htm

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://shdocpa.dll/asst.htm

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FastStart] C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnut32.exe home

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qyuudfa] c:\windows\system32\qyuudfa.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: drct16 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

5 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?), then use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnut32.exe <– this file

c:\windows\system32\qyuudfa.exe <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll <– this file

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

6 – Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\

* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Double check to see if the folder C:\DOCUMENTSandSETTINGS\YOUR NAME\LOCALSETTINGS\Temp is empty.

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

Note: If you cannot delete them all at once because you have too many, then click and hold ctrl and highlight a batch of them at a time. Once highlighted, R-click over the highlight and select delete. Rinse, lather, repeat until folder is empty

7 – Now, reboot normally and run at least two of these online virus scans (Or more if you wish.), reboot after each scan:

RAV<<
eTrust<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful

Housecall<<
Panda ActiveScan<<
If the above find things to clean, please re-run them to be sure the infections are cleared out. If not, please tell me what remains.

Now, reboot once again, and run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai
Thanks daveai, I'll try this tonight when I get home (it is my home computer that has the problem). One thing I'm not sure about is the two anti-virus programs. I think McAfee was loaded on my machine when I purchased it, but I thought my subscription had run out (it keeps telling me to renew it). I loaded Avast! from Kim Komando's website because it was free and she highly recommended it. I guess I'll try to uninstall the McAfee program, but I'm not sure how to do that if it doesn't show up in the Add/Remove Programs list. On another note, I'd like to completely get rid of Internet Explorer. I use Mozilla as my browser, but any time anyone else jumps onto IE, problems arise. I can't figure out how to do that in the Add/Remove Programs utility. Can you tell me how to uninstall that program? Thanks for your help. Phillip
Thanks for the update. You will need to kleep IE around for a few things, but I'll provide guidance on the safest way to do that. I also use Mozilla (Firefox) and think it is a good alternative. First…let's continue withthe fix and get this system cleaned up. daveai
OK, I have done all of the things you suggested and encountered some interesting results. Step 1: I ran CWShredder from my hard drive (with all browsers closed) and it indicated that my machine was free of CWS. However, after running the HijackThis utility (in Step 4 below) and rebooting, my IE homepage was automatically reset to About:Blank, which I thought was related to CWS. I successfully changed it to cnn.com and haven't had any problems there since. Step 2: I made the change to show all files. Step 3: I ran Adaware SE and Spybot, both of which I have and run every couple of weeks. They always find some things (normally the same things like PeopleOnPage and nCase). Both said they fixed all problems. However, I have been getting a weird error message in both German and English every time I run Spybot these days. It reads: Error during check! Xuron55 (Datei C:\WINDOWS\win.ini kann nicht geoffnet werden. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process). It still indicates that all problems are fixed when I hit "Fix Selected Problems". Step 4: Four of the five entries from my HJT log that you listed were there and I fixed them with HJT. Step 5: When I rebooted to safe mode, I could not find any of the three program files and folders you listed. Step 6: I deleted everything in the Temp and Temporary Internet files folders for all user profiles and emptied the recycle bin. However, I'm not convinced all were actually deleted based on information in the scans in Step 7 below. I did recheck each user to make sure that both folders were empty after deleting everything. Step 7: I rebooted and ran RAV and eTrust. RAV found one infected file as follows: C:\Volume Informatio_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588264}\RP524\A0073477.exe - Trojan:Win32/Websearch.C and one suspicous file as follows: C:\Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588264}\RP477\A0062890.exe - Backdoor:Win32/Poebot.E eTrust found nine infected files as follows (name of infected program and file listed first, then location on my machine where it was found listed second): thnall4c[1].exe Win32.BettInet.AO C:\Documents and Settings\Juliette\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\T8OVX9OL\ A0062818.exe Win32.Lospad.C C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP477\ A0064229.DLL Win32.Daoser.D C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP492\ A0068047.dll Win32.BettInet.AV C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP511\ A0069031.dll Win32.BettInet.AV C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP512\ A0073443.dll Win32.BettInet.AV C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP524\ A0073609.exe Win32.SillyDL.GL C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP524\ qyuudfa.exe Win32.BettInet.AN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ wupdt.exe Win32.SillyDL.GL C:\WINDOWS\ eTrust indicated that it could not clean any of these. One other note of interest. I left my Avast! virus scanning program running while doing all of this, which may have been a mistake. In any event, in the scan runs of both of the spyware programs and the two web-based anti-virus programs, Avast! alerted me of numerous viruses and adware files it found. I pressed delete for each of them and went on. I didn't have time to run the last HJT logfile. I spent about 3.5 hours on this and just couldn't stay awake. I'll run it tonite when I get home, but I thought I would post the results of all the other steps so you could see where we were going. Thanks again for your help. PL
Slipped home at lunch to run HJT and post log. See below.

The HijackThis logfile is clean…no obvious malware. Nice work :)

For the Rav issues:

1 – Reset your System Restore to eliminate the traces of malware found there:

To prevent any remnants of the problems hiding out in your restore files, please disable Windows System Restore, then reboot, then re-enable Windows System Restore by following the instructions at: "How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore"

Then, create a new restore point for your system.

2 – Use Windows Explorer to find and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qyuudfa.exe <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe <– this file

And, I would not worry about the Avast activity while you were running the other scans

For the Spybot "dateai" issue…look here at the third post inthe thread for a workaround:

http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=28120

And, please please allow me to suggest some general prevention steps to keep one's computer clean and secure. You have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Be sure you update your anti-virus software at least once a week.

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – Continue using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
