Can you give more details of the crash please. Is there a blue screen with an error number, does it hang or just shut down. Does it ever have the problem when first starting for the day or is it only after the computer has run for awhile? Any specific details you have will help.
comp. freezes or locks up maybe,by this i mean screen image remains the same(whatever it may be) there is no blue screen or garbled images.also,to power down or turn off comp. i have to hold button with my finger even though the mouse SOMETIMES remains functional(in respect to movement only).there has been a clicking type of noise(only once or twice)kind of like disc drive tray releasing but never opening.thanks for your time and i will try to reply asap………..Email Address Removed

i forgot….if i turn comp. off from a functional state it never has a problem booting back up,however,if it freezes there is no telling how many attempts will bring'no bootable devices' messages (tried 30 times over two days 31st time it started up like normal)…….thank you………..

A couple of side notes:
I edited the email address out of your posts. It is a bad idea to post your email address 'naked' on the web.
Please use the 'Post Reply' button to post your response instead of the quote button (unless you feel it necessary to quote, then only include the part you want to quote instead of the whole post). All those quotes make it hard to read the post and increase the size of the thread exponentially.
Thank you.

Do you have a Windows 2000 install CD (the one that installs windows, not the "Recovery" cd that comes with a new computer)?

If so, do the following.1. Put the Windows 2000 cd into the drive and close the window that opens.
2. Go to Start>Run and type sfc /scannow into the box, notice that there are two of the letter 'n' in 'scannow' and there is one space between the 'c' and the '/'.
3. Click 'Ok' and let the scan finish.
See how things work from there and let us know if the problem reoccurs, or if it doesn't.

If the problem does reoccur let us know as much informaiton as you can about when it occurs. Also, see if you can use + + keys (pressed at the same time) to get taskmanager to open.
thank you for your time and patience,rand1038.my comp. is finally back up after two 'no devices found' days.this time when it froze/seized up the screen image remained the same as always, but,i could move the pointer with my wireless mouse and touch pad although that was the extent of any functionality.prior to this freeze/seizure comp.was operating fine for a couple of days turning it on and off many times.unfortunately,i do not have any discs what so ever, can i purchase those?as far as the task manager opening,my comp. froze for a couple of seconds and i was able to ctrl+alt+del and save it,and then five or so minutes passed and it froze/seized up letting me move the pointer around and nothing else.again, thanks and i think i responded correctly this time(didn't realize qoute was a pain)

Sorry to keep you waiting so long.
You can probably find a copy of windows 2000 for sale. There are some copies on ebay for sale. The used prices don't look bad at all and a few of the sellers have good ratings. I think the first thing to do would be to do the sfc scan. It may be a hardware problem but its best to eliminate the software first if you can.
Keep us posted. :)
hey rand1038,good to hear from you.to update you i have taken the hard drive from another laptop and it starts perfectly every time, but that is IT! with this new hd i get to the sign in screen (windows xp)and i cannot do anything else, move cursor or type password, etc. is it possible to just throw in another hd and take off running or is there more to it ?i am going from 2000 to xp??? also with the new hd when i start comp. holding f2(set up menu) the comp. is recognizing all devices, and i have yet to read 'no bootable devices found'.
That other laptop must be very similar in hardware configuration to the one you are using. You got pretty lucky. Normally you cannot just plug in a different hard drive and have it run. Have you tried putting the old hard drive back in to see how it works now? Maybe it was just a loose connection. If you think the hard drive is the problem and want to change it then you should wipe the new hard drive and install the operating system fresh. If you can slave the 'bad' hard drive in then you may be able to recover files from it if you need to. Not knowing what type of equipment you are working with I cannot advise you on how to do that. If you post back with the machine make and model we may be able to come up with some information to help you out.
i am using a dell inspiron 8000(f.y.i.,the hd is from a gateway solo 1450).i am going to buy a bigger hd now that i think this is the problem, any suggestions?i guess i have to buy a new oper. system,i s that correct.once again rand1038,thank you!
If you got system restore disks with the computer then you could use those on a new hard drive. If you do choose to buy an Operating System install disc (which I highly recommend as you will have additional tools to use if you run into problems) then I would recommend you check out some of the offerings on Amazon for used discs. Go with someone who has a high rating and has done several transactions, preferably a business, and you should be ok. There is some risk involved but if you check out the seller before hand it is minimal. I've bought a few things there applying that philosophy and never had a problem. Don't let anyone talk you into getting a cracked (illegally copied, usually free) version of windows, they are more problems than they are worth and often contain back doors that the cracker can use to get into your system.

As far as hard drives go (if you have a choice with a laptop, they are often proprietary, which means you may have to buy it right from Dell), I have always used Western Digital. They last for a long time, the price is right, they back them up and their web support is very good. I recommend you shop around locally for one and get the best bargain you can find. If you buy one over the net and have problems with it then it could take weeks to resolve them whereas with a local store all you have to do is bring it back. If you can swing it, put some more memory (RAM, a.k.a Memory Modules) in the computer while you are at it. The more memory the better, that system only shipped with 128 MB which is the minimum spec for XP.

Here is a link to the user guide for the inspirion 8000, in various formats.
