I have been unable to remove the Trojan REBATES.EXE, which when removed, reinstalls itself on each reboot. And who knows what else resides in the bowels of my registry – Hopefully, one of you. I've ad-awared, spybotted and spyswept my computer within an inch of its life. Yet REBATES.EXE still lives in my C:/Documents and Settings/Owner/Local Settings/Temp/folder.

Here is my HiJack This log: Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Hello Bopper1929, Welcome to TomCoyote forums. If you still need help please follow these instructions in the posted order:

1) You have some bad stuff, and perhaps one of them is putting the rebates thing back, I guess I don't have to ask if you deleted everything in that Temp folder. Read this:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…rary/winupdate/

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

3) Now get rid of this: C:\WINDOWS\system32\p2pnetworking.exe Read this: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…P%20Networking/ First look in Add Remove prgrams, if it is there uninstall it, then open Task Manager, then the Processes Tab. Highlite and end process on: p2pnetworking.exe
Look for this in Add Remove programs also, if you see it, uninstall it: Media Access

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in
front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdate] C:\Program Files\winupdate\winupdate.exe /auto
backdoor Trojan
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [p2pnetworking] p2pnetworking.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
Windupdates MEDIAPAS.A adware
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [p2pnetworking] p2pnetworking.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\p2pnetworking.exe >>> file

C:\Program Files\Media Access\ >>> folder
C
:/Documents and Settings/Owner/Local Settings/Temp/folder. Empty the folder highlited in red, just the contents, not the folder

Locate C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and open it. Delete the contents of the folder (NOT THE FOLDER) if there are many choose Edit then Select all then Delete. You may not be able to remove them all, don't be concerned unless any have the name of the items we need to remove. Here is some information about the Prefetch for you:
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1683520,00.asp

Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

To pskelley Re: Rebates.exe Thanks for your help, albeit unfortunately, too late. I've reformatted and reinstalled. But thanks for your help.
:( Sorry I did not get to you before you had to use the "R" word. The forum is extremely busy. I would still like you to benefit from this information, it might help to keep from getting infected again:
