Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped, and unfortunately, not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like. If you still need help with your problem, please reply to this message with a new HijackThis log. I will be notified automatically when you reply. Thanks daveai
Daveai - I still need some help; I haven't done anything with the computer since the last posting which included the most recent HJT log. Thank you, Andiamo
Thanks for the response. I'll be happy to help. Giventhe time that has elapsed, I would like to analyse a 'fresh' HijackThis log prior to writing the fix instructions. Here's why: The infection will change itself to resist detection, so we need to see a current log to be able to knock it down. If we try to do that using the old data, the infection only gets worse. I'm online every day,so the turnaround time onthe fix, once I see the new log, should be less than 24 hours. Once you rerun HijackThis for me, do not reboot or log off until I reply. Also, try to keep you surfing on the infected system to the absolute minimum needed to stay in touch with me during the fix process. Once we start, the fix will take several posts to complete. Thanks daveai

Thanks for your time!

Andiamo
Thanks.

The logfile shows an active About:Blank infection, which may take several posts to fully clean out,

We'll start with the standard automated fix for this pest. If that doesn't knock it out, then we have a longer manual procedure to use.

Here are the first steps:

Thanks.

You have an infection called About:Blank. It may take several tries to fully remove.

First, we'll try the standard automated tools. If that doesn't work, we have a more complicated manual process that will take care of it.

1 – Please download Intermute's CWShredder from here:
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it, and click "Fix" to remove the CWS infection.

2 – Then please download About:Buster from here:
http://www.malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster5.zip
Unzip the files to a convenient location such as C:\AboutBuster, and run AboutBuster.exe. Read the instructions then click OK to proceed.

Click "Check for Updates", and then "Download Updates" to update About:Buster to the newest version.

Then click Start to begin the scan. If prompted to end the Explorer.exe process, click Yes. Your desktop may disappear — this is normal. Allow the program to scan twice, and when complete click "Save Log". This will create a text file called "AB Logfile.txt" in the folder where About:Buster is saved.

Please post the entire contents of that logfile here in your reply to this message.

3 – And, please restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log as well.

Thanks
daveai
Per your instructions; I ran CWShredder it showed 'restoring internet explorer pages - 0 restored', 'restoring hidden internet explorer option tab - done', and 'removing host file redirections - none infected'.

I then ran AboutBuster and below is the logfile; I then restarted the computer and ran HJT.

There is still evidence of About:Blank in your running processes, so let's turn to the manual fix…

Step#1:Getting Ready

(the reason Wordpad was chosen is that Notepad is sometimes deleted by this variant)

Please save these instructions to WordPad so that you have them accessible while following the steps. You also may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. You must disconnect from the internet totally, as staying connected while fixing will prevent the fix from working. Also please keep Internet Explorer and Outlook Express closed throughout as opening either will reinstall the infection. Read through all the instructions so that you can ask any questions now, before you disconnect from the Internet.

Please start by downloading the tools you will need to clean this infection. If you have a problem or question with any please continue to follow the list step by step to the end and ask the questions when you are asked to reply. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#2:Show All Hidden Files

Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.
http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step#3:Download CWShredder

1. Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder, from CWSInstall.exe

2. Check for Updates but please Do NOT use it yet

Step#4:Download About Buster

1. Please download About:Buster from here: http://www.malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster5.zip.

2. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster.

3. Check to make sure it is up-to-date. Please Do NOT use it yet

Step#5:Download Registrar Lite

Another program to download is Registrar Lite for use later: Please download Registrar Lite and install it to C:\Program Files\RegLite\ . This is a registry editor that is very easy to use.

Please disconnect from the Internet. All instances of IE and Outlook should be closed by now. And, you should be following these instructons from the saved text file you created earlier.

Step#6:Disable The Bad Service
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE
  • Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper . Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step#7:Stop The Running Processes

(only for Win2k/XP)

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the following processes if they exist:

C:\WINNT\nttl32.exe

Step#8:Use HijackThis to Delete About Blank

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINNT\nttl32.exe <– this file

C:\WINNT\system32\sysmd.exe <– this file

C:\WINNT\system32\appip32.dll <– this file

C:\WINNT\system32\netij.exe <– this file

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#9:Cleaning With HijackThis

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0C21C63F-5429-2844-0115-D32EF23FDED1} - C:\WINNT\system32\appip32.dll (file
missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [netij.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\netij.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [nttl32.exe] C:\WINNT\nttl32.exe

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT
\system32\sysmd.exe (file missing)

click "fix checked"

Step#10: Backup The Registry

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is making a Registry backup for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

Step#11: Delete the Registry Entries

3. Copy and paste each line of bold text below into the address bar of Reglite one at a time:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

4. Copy and Paste each line of bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite one at a time:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

If you get errors when copying and pasting the above bold entries into RegLite please try replacing the bold text with the following abbreviated line, changed as necessary for each entry eg currentcontrolset001, currentcontrolset002
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
    AND
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_
If this search finds the bad entries please look in the left hand column for the funny looking letter/number combination and if found, right click and choose delete for each entry

Please be cautious in identifying the correct entries in the registry because deleting other entries may cause serious problems with your PC

Step#12:Fixing With CWShredder
  • CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder
  • Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.

Step#13:Fixing With About Buster

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.
  • Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory
  • double-click on aboutbuster.exe
  • When the tool opens press the OK button, then Start button, then the OK button
  • then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files.
  • If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • Post the log file in your next reply

Step#14:Saving and Using a Reg File

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Reboot your computer back to normal mode

Step#15:Scan and Post a New HJT log with other logs

  • Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

  • Reconnect To The Internet

[*]Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.

    Thanks

Thank you again! I appreciate your help and time.
Thanks.

Nice work so far :)

Thisnext step dows some file repair and final clean-up. There will be one more set of instructions after this one.

Step#1:Restore Deleted System Files

Now we need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:Please check for the following files using the Windows Search Engine:
  • control.exe
  • rundll32.exe
  • wmplayer.exe
  • msconfig.exe
  • notepad.exe
  • shell.dll
  • SDHelper.dll
If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from
Merijn's Files and following the instructions at that site to have them where they belong for your OS.

[*]If you are having any difficulty with Notepad, please go to Merijn's Files and choose 'Windows Files' from the menu on the left hand side of the page. Then choose 'Notepad' from the list and download it to C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32

[*]Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.

[*]This infection often deletes some system files that need to be replaced. The most frequent one it deletes is shell.dll in Win2K or XP. In XP there are two copies of this file, one in Windows (WINNT) and one in Windows\System32. It does not delete the one in Windows\System so it does not affect Win9x/ME. If you find it missing, please copy the shell.dll from c:\windows\system32\dllcache into both \Windows (WINNT) and Windows\System32 .

[*]The other system file which is most frequently deleted is control.exe. Please check to make sure that you have this file and it is the correct size. If not Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to the information at this website. The control.exe is more often deleted in Win9x/ME.

[*]If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button

Step#2:Complete An Online AntiVirus Scan

Run an online antivirus scan at:

Trend Micro Online AV

Reboot

Step#3:Scan And Post a New HijackThis Log
  • Navigate to C:\Windows
  • look for files that were created at the approximate time and date as the infection occurred.
  • look for those that end in exe, DAT and DLL and if found, right click on the file and check properties. Legitimate files should be copyrighted by Microsoft
  • if you determine they are bad files, right click on them and choose delete
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\System32 (depending on the OS) and repeat each of the above steps to check for those ending in exe, DAT and/or DLL
  • if the above files will not delete, then make a new folder on your desktop by right clicking on the desktop and choosing New > Folder. Name the folder CWS Files.
  • Move the files from C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\system32
to the new folder CWS Files.

Step#4:Using your WIndows CD to replace System Files

** In cases where many system files are missing you have no alternative but to have them insert their Windows OS disk and run sfc /scannow from the Run box if able or from Recovery Console if not able to get into windows

Step#5:Scan And Post a New HijackThis Log

1. Scan again with HijackThis

2. POST your log file using Add Reply to see what is left to fix.
Everything seemed to go just fine. Didn't seem to be missing any System files, Trend Micro AV Scan didn't show any viruses, trojan worms or spyware. It did show 17 Microsoft Vulnerabilities and AVG was detecting viruses, but, it seemed that when I looked for dll's, dat's and exe's the virus notifications went away. I am attaching two HJT log's, the first one was after the Trend Micros Virus scan and the second was after removing dll's, dat's and exe's.

Looks a lot better :) Nice work.

1 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

Then reboot and rerun HJT to make sure it is gone.

2 – Then, of immediate concern is the outdated version of Internet Explorer and Windows XP you are running. It is mandatory that you start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

Failure to stay uptodate on MS critical patches is a gauranteed ticket to reinfection.

And, please allow me to suggest some general prevention steps to keep keep your computer clean and secure. You have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Be sure you update your anti-virus software at least once a week.

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – I strongly recommend that you consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks

Daveai - Thanks for all your help! The computer is behaving like I would expect. One final question for you - Have you ever seen a computer have problems with a Windows Security Update after going through a clean-up like what we did? I keep getting notification of a Security Patch KB835732 needing to be downloaded and then installed. I do the download and install, the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs shows the patch as being installed. But, I keep getting notification to download and install. Thanks again for all of your help! Andiamo
You are very welcome. It's a pleasure for us to help. I do not have experience with the Microsoft patch problem you describe, but will toss the questsion out to the rest of our school here. Someone will be able to help I am sure. And, I'll get back to you as soon as I hear something. daveai
I'm back…sorry for the delay.

We have heard fromNonSuch, another of the staff here at TomCoyote, who has experience with a similar problem to yours.

Please review the Microsoft links below and determine if they are able to offer any assistance to you. I'd recommend waiting on the script offered in the third link, until you have a chance to analyze the issue in light of the Microsoft articles.

Note: The first MS article contains instructions for changing the registry. If you decide to try that It is critically important to create a full backup of the registry first!!.

If you would like to consult with my self of NonSuch prior to attempting any of the suggested activities, please let me know.

Thanks
daveai
