:( Hey All, Thanks in advance for your help. I think I've got some Malware/Spyware on my other machine.
Win-98SE, AMD 1GHZ, 256M RAM, Norton IS-2003, Spybot-1.3, Adaware-SE
On a normal bootup, Norton doesn't start. No keyboard and the mouse points, but won't let me click-on/open anything. Safe-Mode boots ok, but Norton -protection turned-off with a driver error message if I try to open it. I did scan HD, but no viruses found. Scanned with Spybot and adaware(definitions on Adaware are old though, and I need to upgrade my 03 Norton when I get this fixed :) Google has been a waste of time. I downloaded and ran Hijack (log attatched) I'm ussually pretty good about not opening junk so not sure How I got it, though my little guy goes to cheatplanet for PS2 cheats alot…maybe got it there :)
Hope you guys/gals can help. Jamie

Hello Hitkredneck797, welcome to the TC.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [KB891711] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE

O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Open C:\windows\start menu\programs\startup
look for KB891711.EXE and right click on it and delete.

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Prior to getting your reply I had cleaned-out Windows Temp folder and ddeleted IE cookies and files per Aumha quickfix guide. Also downloaded and installed Norton-2003 Virus defs(on laptop and installed via floppies). Saw you had posted to me and so I did the steps as your stated them and fixed the 4 Hijack entries.
The 1711.exe file was not in the Programs/Startup folder, only thing there was a Kodak Easy Share startup file so I did not delete anything there.
C/W disk cleanup
Rebooted…got Selective start-up screen, selected Normal Bootup-
Go a Red screen that said: "unable to initialize the virus scanning engine Database"
[OK]–pressed Enter–got blue error screen "fatal exception error at
0000:0000046D the current application will be terminated-press any key-
hit spacebar-got nothing on monitor–had to hot reboot

next bootup did not detect HD or CDROM drive and gave me: "Boot from ATAPI CDROM: Disk boot failure-insert sys disk"
I did another hot reboot and got Red screen again, did another hot reboot, got selective start-up screen-selected Safemode (*showed selective startup screen again during safemode bootup process?), came up in safemode ok.
Scanned HD with latest virus defs-nothing found.
Tried restoring Hijack the 4 fixes and rebooted, but same results. Reselected/fixed 4 items in Hijack.
Did search on Red error meassage and Symantic site says Virus defs corrupted-reset system clock or uninstall/reinstall Norton. Virus defs were downloaded on my XP-Pro laptop even though defs said they were good for 9x/ME/NT/200/XP so they should have been good!
Here's the new hijack log

Yes I have my 98SE CD. Happened tuesday night the 31st, but I didn't have problems till the following morning(June 1st)
» On Windows 98 and ME

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press the F8 key until the startup menu appears.

Choose the Command Prompt option then press Enter.

at C:\ (type in) scanreg /restore. Note the space: It will prompt you for your choice of registry to restore. Pick a date of a registry that used to work properly. Then you'll be prompted to reboot. It's very simple.
I tried that on the 3rd, unfortunatly, there were only 3 reg backups to choose from, the 31st being the oldest which is the date I figured it happenned on. tried it anyway, but no luck. I think I'm about ready to slap that 98 disk in right after I reformat after supper tonight, unless I get a miricle cure. Looks like Norton didn't like my updated defs I pulled off their site today and it won't allow me to uninstall in Safe mode. Thanks for your help though.
We don't have anything to loose at this point.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mdac_runonce] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\runonce.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:
In Windows, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

If that doesn't work:

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press the F8 key until the startup menu appears.

Choose the Safe Mode option then press Enter.

click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key.
look in the Startup. List everything there and point out which ones have a check next to it.

If you uncheck anything, you'll be using Selective startup next time you reboot.
When you see the box popup that tells you that, just put a Check in the Box to not show that when you startup. That's how I run mine.
LD, cleaned-out temp files this morning, also cleaned-out IE files. Since Norton virus defs are hosed and safemode or Norton won't let me uninstall the program, I finally gave in to Fdisk and reformatted the drive. Still can't see the CDROM drives-gives "invalid Drive Spec " when I try to go from C: to D:, E:, F: G: and win-98 won't load. I see the momentary flash of windows gui right before i get the C: Running a Seagate drive diagnostic utility to see if my HD is hosed or not. Any ideas? Thanks for the help anyway.
LD, Thanks for the link. Evidently the I had been trying to use was bad. About midnight I tried the one that came with 98 disk and it actually loaded everything it needed. Loading Windows as I write this. Wish I had tried that disk before I reformated :P Anyways, gotta copy my Adaware, Spybot, Xoftcopy, and bu stuff onto a disk to reload after windows finishes. Thanks for your help,
Be sure to have those up and running before you go to the internet. Matter of fact, I'd leave my connection (cable / phone line) un-plugged until I had them running.
Here are some others when you get up and running if you don't have them

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
