My pc has been running very slow.
I've tried various things,deleting,defragging etc.
A friend who uses this forum couldn't help but reccomended I posted a log in this forum.
Would be most grateful if anyone could spot anything out of place here.
Thanks in advance.

Hello andywolves, Welcome to TomCoyote forums. If you still need help please follow these instructions in the posted order:

Before I remove the malware in your log, I need to say that you have no SP1 and that you have none of the critical security updates for your browser. It is no longer a question of if you will get infected badly but rather when. I strongly suggest you visit Windows Updates then download and install all suggested critical updates for your Operating System. I DO NOT suggest you consider SP2 until you are sure you are clean of malware.

Platform: Windows XP SP here(WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 (6.00.2600.0000)

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
(next item may be good? but it is running from a Temp folder and CCleaner will remove it anyway)
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [VcCleanUp.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\smith\LOCALS~1\Temp\VcCleanUp.exe /F C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYMANT~1\LiveReg\ /Remove

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

(this is an optional scan, use it if you wish to check for hidden trojans)
Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

This is information you will need to know prior to considering SP2

Thanks for the reply. I was just off to bed when the email for this reply came through! Sounds pretty serious about the updates,i'll do it first thing tomorrow and then follow the instructions. I'll get back to you with the results. Thanks again, Andy.
Ok…I think i've done everything asked.
The pc is running 30%ish quicker (sp1?) but from logging on it's taking a long time (3 to 4 minutes) before I can use any programmes?

Anyway,here is a rescanned log.

Hello Andy, Glad to hear the machine is running better. I can't see a lot in your wasting resources at startup. I will point out what I see but I must say I have a Dell 4550 and also 4700 and both take around 3 to 4 minutes to boot to where I can start opening programs. How is your maintenance? Do you run scan disk and Defrag on a regular basis?

Here are a few links that may help:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen…mb_tol_vvcu.asp

Fred Langa who wrote the article in the third link has a great free newsletter where you may find ideas to help here:
http://www.langa.com/

I would also suggest running a free diagnostic here to see if they spot something that will help:

Looking at the log:
