I just joined this site so I am new to this. My PC has been infected with Aurora the last few weeks and I would like to ask for your help removing it. I am currently using CounterSpy which can detect Aurora but fails to remove it. I also have zone alarm. Aurora has taken over zone alarm by adding itself to zone alarms trusted programs and removing my abaility to change it. I also have Norton Antivirus. Here is my HiJackThis log. Please let me know if I have any other infections besides Aurora(Nail.exe). Thanks in advance for your help.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/nailfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

The above Registry file written by miekiemoes was written specifically for this infection and is not to be used on any other infection as it could damage a person's PC

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check (if there):

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Hans,
Thank you for your response. I followed your instructions and everything worked fine except Ewido. The Ewido scan worked OK except that the application crashed right at the end of the scan. When I restart Ewido, I can see that it found 551 infections but it never made it far enough to generate a report file. I tried this twice and it did the same thing both times. Tomorrow I will try to uninstall and re-install Ewido. In the meantime, I thought I would post my lastest HijackThis log file for you to look at. It shows that nail.exe is gone. Thanks again for your help.

Hans,
This morning was a slightly frustrating morning. I uninstalled Ewido, re-downloaded it and then re-installed it. I ran another scan and it crashed again. It said "Unhandled exception in Ewido Security Suite - Access Violation". Therefore, I can not post an Ewido log. It did place another 92 items in quarantine which I deleted. However, the most frustrating part of this morning is that Aurora is back! In fact it just gave me another pop up. I ran HijackThis again and nail.exe is back in the log file. I have posted this new log file below. Hopefully you still have some tricks up your sleeve.

Hans, I created the file findjobs.bat as described. Here is the contents of the file files.txt: Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 6843-D924 Directory of C:\WINDOWS\tasks 11/25/2003 10:39 PM . 11/25/2003 10:39 PM .. 08/29/2002 06:00 AM 65 DESKTOP.INI 06/04/2005 10:49 AM 6 SA.DAT 11/25/2003 10:39 PM 412 Symantec NetDetect.job 3 File(s) 483 bytes Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Sharon\Desktop
Hans,
I did the steps again. The Hijack log again shows that nail.exe is gone. Not sure how long that will last before it comes back. I ran Ewido again. I discovered that if I stop it before it completes, I can save the log file for what it completed so far. I stopped it in the middle of the C:\windows directory. If I let it finish the windows directory, it crashes. A lot of what Ewido finds comes from the System Volume Information directory. It looks like there are a few hundred restore points in that directory. Is there any way to clean that up? Anyways, below is the Hijack this log and the Ewido log. Thanks again for your time.

::Report End
Hans, I just wanted to give you an update. It did not take long for Aurora to come back. The first time internet explorer was started Aurora was there to greet me. I ran a new Hijack This log and Nail is back in it. I posted the new Hijack This log below. Also, I ran Ewido again. This time I turned off the "Archives" check box and it was able to complete a full scan without crashing. The full scan report from Ewido is posted below as well. Thanks again for your time in helping solve this problem.

Hi, You'll have to do the whole fix again. After rebooted the final time, do not reboot untill I'm back with a fix! It seems to reinstall itself after a reboot (if the bad O4-line/startupline is still in place). I'll get back to you ASAP :)
Hans, OK. I will wait until you get back to me before I try the fix again. I believe I would need to know what O4 lines to remove before going into safe mode since I believe I can not get to the internet in safe mode. Is that correct? Thanks, Dave
Hans, OK. I repeated all the steps from post number 2 above. The Hijack This log and the Ewido log are posted below. My computer will remain on and idle until I hear from you. :) Thanks again.

::Report End
Hans, I did as you instructed and posted the new HijackThis log below. One problem that I encountered was that I could not perform step 5, search and delete files, in safe mode. The search tool was not letting me enter any file names. I had to reboot into normal mode before I could search for the files.
Thanks again for your help.
