any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks
Hi sean7711, Welcome to the TomCoyote Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. I need you to move HijackThis to its own folder so that nothing gets deleted by mistake. The easiest way for you now would be as follows:

. Right Click on your Desktop
. Scroll down the menu to "New"
. Left click on "Folder"
. Name Folder "HJT"
. Drag or copy the current HijackThis icon from your desktop into the HJT Folder
. Run HJT from there.

2. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now for the difficult part. Your system is suffering from the Bube virus which is very difficult to remove. Before we start, make sure that you backup all your important data in case we run into major trouble.

The following link will provide you with all the information concerning the virus/trojan itself as well as the best description around as far as how to use the programs. CalamityJane's Treatment

I would advise you to print the article out so as to have it at your fingertips. Follow the instructions to the letter. When they mean SAFE MODE do it.
When they say DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET do it.

3. When you are all finished your chores, return to this thread and post a fresh HJT log. We will start cleaning up the remnants.

Regards,

Trevuren
Hi. Thanks for the help! I really appreciate you helping my family computer get back on track. I ran the KAV, etc. Here is the new Hijack log. The KAV thread you sent me hinted at the microsoft anti-spyware helping remove some of this Bube. virus. I also run spybot and ad-aware along with symantec AV, hope any of that info helps.

I think this was only a partial success. I'll be able to tell you after this.

1. I need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Options, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

2. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Themes - C:\WINDOWS\system32\fp8s03l7e.dll

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

FILES

C:\WINDOWS\system32\fp8s03l7e.dll

FOLDERS (with all their content)

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren
I did everything that you just requested. I could not find the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\fp8s03l7e.dll but did delete C:\WINDOWS\isrvs. The new Hijack log file is:

Good, one more thing to check…

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

You possible have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Trevuren

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Regards,

Trevuren

We got rid of a lot of bad stuff again. I just had that feeling

I think there is still more lurking. It should all go this time. Boy did you have stuff.

1. I want you to download and run a free trial version of an anti-trojan program called Trojan Hunter: Trojan Hunter . Let it scan your whole system and remove anything it finds.

REBOOT
your system.

2. Run Kaspersky anti-virus again.

3. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

-everything seems to be running smoothly. can i now run ad-aware/spybot and reinstall my symantec? thanks for all the help!
Your log looks clean from my end.

Before doing what you mentioned, please carry out these final cleanup procedures. I have also included some recommendations for staying safe.

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

To do what you want to do:

1. Pull the plug on your internet connection. (You don't want to be online without AV protection).

2. UNINSTALL Kaspersky completely. (2 AV at the same time is a sure recipe for disaster and possible reinfection because they conflict with each other)

3. Re-install Your Symantec program

4. Go online and update your definitions and run a full system scan.

5. Now download, install, configure, update and run both Ad-Aware and Spybot according to the instructions provided at the bottom of my post in my signature pane.

Unfortunately, I cannot really help you with your Microsoft update problem. Your best bet is Microsoft's own Resource Center.

Regards,

Trevuren
Thank you very much for assisting me in my problems. I ran a complete Symantec scan which came up clean, and CleanUp worked well, and then did Spybot/Ad-Aware…everything is back up and running and fast! I really appreciate all the effort and assistance in my problem. Thanks Sean
