My computer is experiencing painfully slow boot-ups and it frequently locks-up while browsing. I have current anti-virus as well as ad-aware & spybot s&d.
Question: how can you determine which files to remove? I am running some oddball cad programs that you probably have not heard of and maybe those programs are bogging it down?

Hi Todd, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need some help please follow these instructions in the posted order:

1) We will remove a few items that should go, do a good cleaning and then check for anything hidden, then we will see how you are running.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SPYSPOTTER\ >>> folder

C:\Program Files\Installed Programs\MS Office 97\Office\FINDFAST.EXE >>> file

Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Here is the log file after: removing files using hjt and running ccleaner. Trojan Hunter did not find anything. M y computer boots up much faster but it still frequently freezes up when browsing the internet, any suggestions?

Also, how can I remove comcast support agent from my taskbar tray? I am assuming I do not need it to connect or use the internet.

Hi Todd, thanks for your feedback and the new log. While I do not like to suggest it, I must say that Windows Me was not the best operating system Microsoft released, but I am sure you have heard this before. I will look over your feedback, report on the condition of the new log and then I will see if I can offer some suggestions to make Me perform a little better.

Also, how can I remove comcast support agent from my taskbar tray? I am assuming I do not need it to connect or use the internet.

Are you no longer using ComCast as your ISP? Are you asking to have all Comcast I can removed from the computer? Thanks as I wish to be sure what you are asking.

Now let's consider your freezing issues. First let's run one more scan, choose either one of these two scans and set it to clean or fix and scan the complete system:

I also suggest you update and run your onboard antivirus software.

It is possible you have a driver that needs to be updated. Visit Windows updates and look to see if any driver updates are suggested. If so, I suggest you find the driver where the product came from rather than the Windows driver.

What about maintenance, when was the last time you ran all of it. I do not know the shape of your hard drive but I know the more full a hard drive is the better chance of problems and the more often it should be defragged.
