HIJACKED By BETTER INTERNET

my step son went on to a site recomended by a well known female radio computer talk show host, and and he got slammed by with trojans, and spyware, and browser hijackers. SPYSWEEPER, ADAWARE, and SPYBOT are unable to remove them, and AVG antivirus found trojans, and removed them. we had to disconnect the networking cable from the back, as it pulling stuff down. i was able to mellow it out with some, but still require some assistance, please.

this is todays HIJACK THIS scan. i have been able to get rid of most of th stuff, by reading thru most of the previous posts, but the one thing that is bothering me is that SPY SWEEPER ( TRIAL VERSION) keeps showing up the WEBSEARCH TOOLBAR and will not remove it, while SPYBOY, and AD-AWARE do not show it being there. SPY BOT and AD-AWARE are both the latest versions, with the latest definitions. I have done GOOGLE SEARCHES, and other sites, and cannot get rid of it, and my wife is to the point she is going to reload WINDOWSXP service pack 2. and throw the computer out the window. :(

I am most concerned that the F2 Nail.exe entry is not in the latest log. It is a serious parasite and must be dealt with.

The following line in a HijackThis log shows that MSConfig is running at startup.

This indicates that you are using "diagnostic startup" or "selective startup" rather than "normal startup", when booting up. Which indicates some things have been disabled your startup programs. We often see this when users have tried to fix their computer by disabling the spyware and malware. In these cases the spyware and malware will not show in the HijackThis log and cannot be diagnosed, or fixed.
Please go to Start> Run and type MSConfig in the 'Run' box. When the System Configuration Utility opens, go to the 'Startup Tab' and make sure there is a checkmark beside each entry. Then the general tab should have the "normal startup" option checked. REBOOT when asked to by Windows to complete the change

After completing the above please Scan again with HJT and POST a new HJT log in this thread using 'Post Reply' and we will have another look at the log.

Hi falconeer

Congratulations, you have done an outstanding job of cleaning the Malware from your PC. Your Hijack This log is clean.

All I can offer is a few recommendations.

Protection Recommendations:

If you dont have these three FREE programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system, but only one of each.


One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK

thank you. i seem to still have some difficulty having websearch toolbar being removed from the computer. WEBROOT SPY SWEEPER finds it, but cannot seem to remove it, where as AD AWARE, and SPY BOT cannot seem to find it. the system is WINDOWS XP service pack 2. any suggestions?

Hello falconeer Well, it seems that SpySweeper is the only program so far, that is recognizing a WebSearch Toolbar. Hijack This is not recognizing it either. Are you having any difficulties that can be traced back to WebSearch Toolbar ? Is it showing up as a Toolbar on your PC screen ? If the only indication is that SpySweeper says there is a problem, but offers no solution, I cannot venture an explanation for that. I doubt that removing, then reinstalling SP2 would have the desired effect. If WebSearch Toolbar is causing problems, please expand on the nature of the problem and supply any additional information that you feel is relevent. I will not need to see a Hijack This log at this time.

there does not seem to be any degridation on IE, and there is no tool bar that i can see , from what i can tell, on on my wife's system. i wrote WEBROOT, and they responded back, and informed us to update our trial version to the latest trial vesrion. we insatlled it, just now, and it seems to have removed it, so far. i have also shown ,and we will read about IESPY AD and both my wife and i will be installing IESPY AD on our systems. thank you for your assistance, and all the other others that asisit in this matter. :D

Hi falconeer That's great. Glad your difficulties with that seem to be behind you. The update on SpySweeper either removed it, or possibly the update may have corrected a glitch within the program that gave a false indicator. That, none of us will probably ever know.
