Hello,

I once had a superbly clean running computer. No popups ever, no speed problems. Then one day, I clicked on a link from a friend (it turned out she had the virus and it just came from her screen name) and now I get so many popups that my computer locks up. I have used SpyBot and AdAware and now am trying HiJackThis as requested. I have also noticed a very big change in the processing speed of my computer. Below is the log.

I thank you for any help that you can provide.

Removed email address for personal saftey
Hello Bo88 I'll have a look at your log and will reply as soon as possible. By the way, never post your true email address anywhere on the net. You will receive more spam, email viruses, etc than you ever imagined possible. We do not need it posted, it is available to us if it is necessary.
Hello Bo88

We will need to disable SpySweeper for the duration of this fix, or it will attempt to prevent us from making the necessary changes. Please look in your systems tray for the icon, Right click on it and select "disable". It should return to normal after a reboot, but check to see that it does.

One thing we often forget to do before running programs such as Ad-Aware is to UPDATE them before each and every use. Without updates, critical new files could be missing that would cause new parasites to be overlooked by the program and so would remain on our machines unmolested.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Next:
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

The following are recommended fixes:If you did not set these 01 entries and do not know why they are there, fix them with Hijack This.
O1 - Hosts: 216.177.73.139 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 216.177.73.139 search.netscape.com

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders in DARK, and delete them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Reboot and enable hidden files.

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

  7. Reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log and the Ewido scan, in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Please advise if the problem has been resolved.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log.
Piatan, First off, thank you so much for helping me. I have carried out all the directions you gave me, and got to the very end before running into any problems. Once Security Suite scanned my computer, and got to the very end (100%) I got the typical error message from Windows. "SecuritySuite.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvinience." I did restart my computer and rescanned my computer, but had the same result. I did notice that there were a large amount of files in the quarintine. But how do I know if the program ever deleted them or not, since I couldn't complete the process all the way. I'm going to try and redownload Security Suite, and then rescan one more time… before I throw my computer out the window of my third story apartment. I will post the logs or reply after I scan again. Thanks again for the help, if you request I take another action, please advise. Bo
Hi Bo88
Please don't throw your PC out your window. Slow Children may be playing. ;)

Instead, lets try some online scanners and let them do the heavy work.

Please use the following links to run one, or more of the three online Virus Scanners, including Trend Micro and let them fix whatever they find.
Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself. Also, if one or more of these refuses or acts up, don't worry about it, that happens a lot.

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

And here are links to two online Trojan Scanners. Lets run one, or both of these too.

http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html

And here:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

If you are unable to get or use either of the online Trojan Scanners above………..

Go here http://www.trojanhunter.com/ and download and run the free trial of Trojan Hunter.

Then you might update Ad-Aware and let it clean up the dregs.

Download http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php, install and run it to delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

Then post back with a fresh Hijack This log, in this string, using the Post Reply function, so I will be notified.
Ok, first off, thanks a ton. I finally have it back to almost normal. Because I was getting so many popups, I couldn't run the online scans. Trojan Hunter did find and fix over 200 items though. Then I ran the Panda Active Scan which found 22 items, but could only fix 2. I went in manually and found the nonfixed items and deleted them and I haven't had too many popups since. Here is a copy of the active scan file… and items that say "No disinfected" are ones that I manually found and deleted. Below that is the HJT scan. Let me know if you have any more recceommendations.

Oh one more thing, I keep getting a popup window from www.hooowah.com. I've went there, but all the links don't actually let you get anywhere. I'm also getting a constant popup from SpyBot that says "doubleclick" is trying to download, and another popup from sommething else trying to download, but I don't remember the name. Is there a way to set these to be handled automatically?

Thank you so much!

Bo

Hi Bo88
Woah, that was something, finding 200 Trojans. Good job doing all those deletions. You want automatic ? You got it ! Though it will take a lot of time and effort on your part. Some of these you have tried previously, but lets try them again and see if they will run now, or will pick up additional parasites.

Please update and run Ad-Aware. Which should take care of the adware and is a good deal of the problem. Here's a link. If you already have it, be sure to Update it before use.
Install and how to use Ad-aware SE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

I see you have Webroots SpySweeper. It's a good program. Update and Run that too. It should pick up some trash as well.

Next, lets have another crack at some Trojans, that are still in residence.

  7. Please download the free MWAV antivirus tool from here:
    ftp://ftp.microworldsystems.com/download/tools/mwav.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it.  Follow the prompts to scan your system for viruses.  Then please post for me the log of infected files from the BOTTOM panel of the scan window.

    194524

And here is the latest in Anti-Spyware, straight from Uncle Bill.

    Microsoft Anti-Spyware (Beta)

Please go here to download and follow all instructions.
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details…&displaylang=en

Then, please post a fresh Hijack This log along with the MWAV file and the Ewido file and let me know how things are.
Welp, I must say… you are good! You've done it. Although I still couldn't get Ewido to run to completion without shutting down & the MWAV did the same thing. However, when I ran the Microsoft scan, it worked great and found a few things that weren't showing up on any of the others. Since I ran that, I haven't had one popup and I even left my IE on all night just to test it.

I must give you huge thanks for helping me and sticking through since it took me forever to fix this. I do have one question though… what is the advantage of fixing the computer the way we did as compared to just reformatting? Besides having to reload EVERYTHING. Thanks again, here is the Hijack This log…

Hi Bo88 Please go to Start - Run… and type notepad.exe Hit OK. Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap. Close Notepad. Now make a new HijackThis log and post it here, please. Sorry, my eyes aren't what they used to be and reading that last log is difficult. Thanks for the pat on the back, but you and the programs did all the work.
It's funny, I noticed that the logs were coming out differently than before, and I didn't change that setting! Here is the new HJT log and the MWAV log. I ran MWAV again and it worked this time. Also, when I ran the MWAV scanner, after it found errors or spyware, it had a popup that said it could only fix it if I bought something. I may have done all the work, but I couldn't have done it without your know-how. Plus, I'm sure looking through all these logs isn't the quickest process. Thanks again!

It's okay, those settings seem to have a mind of their own.

Have a look at the MWAV log. Many of those are in your Nortons AV Quarantine and can be removed from there. Another thankless job for you, dump them all.

By the way, that's how the MWAV log is supposed to look. It's nothing you did.

Sorry, I didn't answer a question you asked previously about why not just reformat ? Well, reformatting is not an option we are encouraged to offer.

I'm not convinced all those parasites are out of your system. After you have dumped all those things out of Nortons Quarantine, then run Nortons again and see if it will pick up anything new. If it does, dump that load too.
Actually, its good practice to dump anything that any of these type programs find, as soon as they are found. Nortons, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, etal….

Lets run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D again, after updating. Just to be on the safe side.

Then, if you don't mind too much, run a couple of online Trojan scanners. They will often pick up Trojans that our onboard scanners miss.
Here are links to two.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.
Piatan,

Well, I ran everything I got, plus the online scanners you gave me, and it kept coming up clean. Then I ran them again, just for fun. The only things I found were a few cookies, which I deleted. Here is the Hijack This log… but first a few questions/notes.

I am still getting two rather annoying popups from Spybot when I visit certain pages. And I quote:

"Spybot-S&D reports that you want to download "Avenue A, Inc.". This is a known threat. Do you want to BLOCK this download?"
""Spybot-S&D reports that you want to download "DoubleClick". This is a known threat. Do you want to BLOCK this download?"

Of course, these popups seem to come up on the pages that I jump back and forth on, so I get them everytime I hit the back button! Annoying! I have thought about removing Spybot just to get rid of the messages. I have tried accepting the download, and blocking it, but the result is always the same, it pops up again later.

Other than that, everything is great! A few more questions though, since you are the all knowing, and pretty soon you will done with me, and move on to rescuing other helpless lost souls whom you've never met, but like to help out of the goodness of your heart. System Restore… When I frist started getting popups, I immediately went to System Restore to try and backtrack a few days, then a few weeks, and finally a few months. The computer would restart, but the restore would never work. Is this something that the virus did? I had used System Restore before, and it worked great. Right now I have it off, can I go ahead and turn it back on?

2nd question: If you were to recommend one subcription service spyware/malware/virus scanner, which one should I pay up to use? I already have Norton SystemWorks which includes Antivirus.

Again, thanks for all the help, here is the HJT log…

Hi Bo88

Okay, you asked for it. Not that I'm cheap or anything like that, but I don't pay for anything I don't have to.

Here are three that are free, that I wouldn't start my computer without.
I usually offer these when a log comes out clean.

Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

Try those three programs, you'll be glad you did. Can't say for sure, but they just might stop something that you said is so annoying. Worth a try.

I use Zone Alarm Firewall (The free version) and AVG Anti-Virus(free version) and WinPatrol (also free), Ad-Aware se and Spybot S&D (both free). Okay, so I'm cheap, but it works for me.
I'm also on Cox Broadband and sitting behind a linksys Router (hardwired) which does protect me to some degree. I also update everything I have every morning, before doing anything else, so I always have the latest my programs have to offer in protection. I feel I have to because of the places I have to go to check all the bad stuff on other peoples systems. Nothing fancy for me, because I just hate to configure anything.

Please don't blame Spybot. It's just doing the job you asked it to do.
Apparently, those sites you are visiting are trying to download some Internet trash onto your system. Maybe even Viruses, Trojans and Keyloggers.

About System Restore. I don't like to shut it down ever. But when a log comes out clean that's the first thing I want to do. That gets rid of all the stuff that may be hiding there, that will be loaded back onto your system if you do a System Restore. First shut it down, then Run System Restore and set a fresh restore point. Then you have something to turn to if everything goes down the tubes and you have no other backups. You can even give the restore point a name and put the date on it if you want.

If I knew half of what I'm sometimes given credit for I'd be rich, instead of so darn good looking.

You're done. Time to get out of the oven.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK

Safe surfing. :wavey:
