Hey Piatan, Been thinking (know that can be dangerous for some one with a little knowledge). Is it possible that because I didn't empty recycle bin that the bug regenerated from there? Maybe I should try the whole procedure again and make sure I do a clean before a reboot. A buddy also suggested a program called CCleaner to me before I started this procedure. What do you think ? I'll take my seat in the back of the room again. Standing by av8tor
Hello av8tor; I doubt that emptying your recycle bin would have made any difference, or using CCleaner would have either. This is a relatively new variant that is quite difficult to deal with. Also, repeating the previous steps would likely not help, since the parasite seems to have morphed. A complete new set of instructions will need to be prepared to deal with this. Sorry, but it will take some time to have a look at possible reasons that the previous fix did not have the desired result and then figure out what would be the recommended course of action. Thank you for your patience.
Hi av8tor

This won't work if someone is going to be on the net before all proceedures have been followed. Everytime this machine gets on the net, it will continue to reinfect itself and the files will change and so must the instructions given. The instructions need to be followed exactly.

Please ignore the numbering of the steps. You already have the tools necessary and that would be what is in those first few steps.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

We won't go into safe mode since you may not be able to see some of the files we need to delete.

Step#5:

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

1. Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper . Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step#6:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the following processes if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msff.exe

Step#7:

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqadh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3qg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msff.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#8:

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqadh.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqadh.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqadh.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqadh.dll/sp.html#37049

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqadh.dll/sp.html#37049

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [msff.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msff.exe

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msff.exe

Step#9:

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is making a Registry backup for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

3. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Reglite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I

3. Click Go

4. If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
exists it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

5. Copy and Paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I

6. Click Go

7. If LEGACY_11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

8. If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and on the top menu choose Security, then Edit Permissions. Then make sure you are an Administrator and give yourself Full Control of that key. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again. Once you have deleted the key please return to the key and reinstate the original security permissions.

9. If you have had to change the permissions on the keys in Registrar Lite then they will have to be returned to the way they were . To do this please navigate to C:\ProgramFiles\Registrar Lite (Reglite) and double-click on Winkey.reg. It will ask if you want to merge this file with the registry, say Yes. Then double-click on Winkey.hiv and merge this file with the Registry. You have now returned the permissions to the way they were.

Step#10:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply

When it has completed move on to step 11.

Step#11:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step#12:

1.Reboot your computer back to normal mode and Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

2. Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.

Good Luck!

Hello Piatan, Here's my status. I've stopped at a point waiting instructions. After down loading your instructions I've banned all other users and have the modum disconnected on computer we are working on. Here is where I'm stuck Computer in normal mode as instructed RPC Healper stopped and disabled Path for RPC is Windows\system32\msff.exe /s Task manager did not have \msff.exe or anything like it Windows\system32\lqadh.dll found but would not delete. Right click and read only was not checked (nothing was). Continued on and found and deleted d3qg.dll. Found msff.exe but cannot delete. Did Search and found MSFF.EXE-2C6A3B70.PF in Prefetch. Deleted same Went back to delete msff.exe Cannot delete (not read only or any block checked) Msg reads : Cannot delete msff. It is being used by another person or program. close any program that may be using file and try again. Under properties of file.program.advanced: Autoexec file name - %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT Config file name - %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.NT No other users logged on and I have no programs running. Went back to look for lqadh.dll again and it was gone. Thought I would ask for guidence before proceeding. No one is near computer as I await instructions. Once again I am on a different machine now. If I am to continue : Step 11 when I tried this before I got the msg about cannot import (binary codes) ((see previous post)). I take it that is not a concern for me?? Just checking. Once again thanks for all the hard work. Standing by av8tor
Hey Piatan,
:) :D  :weee:

Waited a while and decided to continue with the instructions. I'm sure you have a life outside my problem and decided that I should not sweat it and continue.
I think we got it or at least a big chunk.
I am still off the machine that we are working on and will send you the logs.

Since I never went to the safe mode I have not rebooted the computer yet. These logs came off after completing the list of instructions. I am still disconnected and worry about starting IE yet so I will stand by for further instructions before rebooting or ….

Found the "pest"when running RegLite in controlSet\Services\****

Did not see it in any of the others. Enum\Root\Legacy had one that was 0011F*00DF*00E4*0006#*00B7*00BA*00C4*00C4*00D6`l (Reading it now I wonder if I copied it right) don't know if matters.

Regedit merge OK

Thanks again for your patience and help.
I really hope this is good

Hey av8tor; The latest log looks much better, with only one entry I would question, after a quick look. But I'm sure there will still be things that need doing. I'll have to run this by Jacee, who is helping us with this and will post back as soon as possible. I was just preparing to advise you to do the fix in Safe Mode, which normally is the way to go. Thanks for being so patient.
Hi av8tor;

Please continue to remain off the Internet with this machine. We still have some critical procedures to complete before getting safely on the net is possible. We are very close to finishing, if everything continues to go well.

Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [sdkti.exe] C:\WINDOWS\sdkti.exe

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK, and delete them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\sdkti.exe

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log.
Hi Piatan & all that are helping;
Found the file using explorer in safe and deleted without Killbox program.
Here's the new log

I'm sure it's not done yet but I'm feeling like we are winning or at least on the right path.

Hello av8tor;

Your latest Hijack This log seems to be clean. Just a bit more to do before taking this machine back onto the Internet.

By the way, have you considered using the Firefox browser. It is much safer than Internet Explorer and after this I'd think you would be willing to try almost anything, right ? Personally, it would be first on my list to do.
Here's a link to download Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please remember to make Firefox your primary browser.

Also, here are three programs that will keep you much safer and will definately help to keep things like you have had, off your PC.

If you dont have these three FREE programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system, but only one of each. Never go onto the Internet without both a Firewall and an Anti-Virus.

Now, pressing on. Here is the second part of the fix and is very necessary, as you will see.

If you are having any difficulty with Notepad, please go to Merijn's Files and choose 'Windows Files' from the menu on the left hand side of the page. Then choose 'Notepad' from the list and download it to C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32

Step#1:

Now we need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:
  • Please check for the following files using the Windows Search Engine:

  • control.exe
  • rundll32.exe
  • wmplayer.exe
  • msconfig.exe
  • notepad.exe
  • shell.dll
  • SDHelper.dll

If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from
Merijn's Files and following the instructions at that site to have them where they belong for your OS.

  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • This infection often deletes some system files that need to be replaced. The most frequent one it deletes is shell.dll in Win2K or XP. In XP there are two copies of this file, one in Windows (WINNT) and one in Windows\System32. It does not delete the one in Windows\System so it does not affect Win9x/ME. If you find it missing, please copy the shell.dll from c:\windows\system32\dllcache into both \Windows (WINNT) and Windows\System32 .
  • The other system file which is most frequently deleted is control.exe. Please check to make sure that you have this file and it is the correct size. If not Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to the information at this website. The control.exe is more often deleted in Win9x/ME.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
Step#2:

Run an online antivirus scan at:

Trend Micro Online AV

Reboot

If you have problems using Trend Micro (many do), then here are a few more that will do a similar job for you.

Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Step#3:

1. Scan again with HijackThis

2. POST your log file to see if there is anything left to fix.

Good luck. :D
Hello Piatan,
Sorry it took at little time to get back. I had to go out of town again.

Most file where present and seemed to be running fine/normal size. Shell.dll in windows was missing and I copied back in. I noticed spybot was missing BHO. Went to research on another machine and found that 1.4 was out. I deleted 1.3 before these instructions came in planning to load 1.4.
Machine that was the one that I believe infected mine has been wiped clean with NUKE program. It was too far gone to help.

Ran BitDefender program and it found 6 viruses. It found 27855 and deleted them .It hung up at 59775 of 82878 files (I think about the place where the other programs failed) It said it was looking at D:\PIP\Windows\ but never moved on. Tried pausing and restarting; leaving it for 30 min but it was hung up. Two viruses I saw of the six where Trojan.Downlader.Agent BC and Trojan Agent.BI
Not sure what to make of the program hangup or what the file it was looking at. Found a MS WorksSuite CD in drive and removing it had no effect on scan progress.
Here is my log

Hi av8tor;

I just checked with Jacee and your HJT log is looking much better. Only a few things remaining to do and with any luck you will be through.

Open notepad and copy and paste the following into it:

del c:\*.tmp
del %temp%\*.tmp /f
del %windir%\prefetch\*.*
del %windir%\temp\*.* /f
del C:\documents and settings\*\local settings\temp\*.* /f

Save the file to your desktop as clean.bat and make sure you save the file type as "all files".

Reboot into safe mode

Double click the "clean.bat" file and answer YES to all the prompts..

Reboot normally

Then, please run your copy of Microsoft Anti-Virus and your copy of EWIDO and post the EWIDO scan here, along with a fresh Hijack This log.
Hey Piatan,
Sorry it took so long to reply. Finally got cable hi speed and it had its own issues to handle.
Currently running zone alarm and will be adding AVG anti virus shortly.

Here's the situation.
Did the cut and paste and ran in safe mode as requested. No problems noted.
Tried to run the ewido scan again and again it failed to complete. Shut it self down. It had found some evidence of the trojan and I had it delete everything. It shuts down around the 80% complete. That's the second program that I cannot get to complete (re: Bitdefender in previous post) and three times the ewido has not been able to finish.

I will post the new Hijack and see what you think about not getting any of the scans to complete.

Will be away for a couple. Will check in then
av8tor
Hi av8tor;

Scans still won't complete ? Well, lets try and get the rest of this fixed and then see if they will complete. If not, thats another problem to work on.

If you do not still have CWShredder.
[*]Download the stand-alone version of CWShredder 2.12

http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

When you are on cable Internet, it is necessary to disconnect the Internet cable from your equipment, or you will still be on the Net. Just unscrew it and hang it over the front edge of your desk, so you'll remember to hook it back up when needed. Also, during a lightning storm, disconnect the cable and unplug the electricity at the wall. Either or both of those can fry your PC and all equipment connected to it. Overnight storms are hard on PCs.

Then close every window, disconnect from Internet COMPLETELY and doubleclick the CWShredder icon on your Desktop.
Click Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqadh.dll/sp.html#37049

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Did you screw the Cable back in snugly ?
Hey Piatan.
Ok
Just for clarification I have CSShredder 2.15
Ran it and No items found.
I have cable and connect via a usb wireless device to a "g" modum to the internet (128 bit encription) . Disconnected the wirless usb device from computer during instructions.

All hidden files/extensions set as requested.

AVG now installed. It did find some of the trojans. they seemed to be located in .dll's or in MS antivirus vault which AVG deleted. I can go back to the AVG report and give you a detailed list if you think it would help.
Also running Zone alarm firewall.

I have firefox installed and will be using it more very soon but I used to connect using MSN explorer. Lots of Favorites and links I cannot get transfered over; firefox looked at IE which has very few of my links and not at the MSN explorer. Will be CX MSN as server.

Most of my problems were with the wireless connection early on.

Here is the hijack:

Hi av8tor; I may get a bit long winded here, just bear with me. Just a short note, so I don't leave you hanging. Your HJT log looks the best I've seen. There are no problems visible in the log at all. It is completely clean. However, that last R0 we deleted was left over from the AboutBlank infestation, one of the absolute worst parasites imaginable. It's the Black Plague of the Internet. I would give your PC a clean bill of health, so long as those don't keep coming back. Unfortunately you were dealing with this parasite, while at the same time trying to get wireless cable installed. Not a good combination to try and deal with at all. I would advise to put Internet Explorer and Firefox on Automatic Updating. That way you do not have to remember to check frequently for those Critical Updates. The other protection programs, some can be set to automatically update and others will have to be done manually. The main thing is to do the updates without fail. Personally, I use Internet Explorer only to get the Updates from Microsoft, which is mandatory. For everything else, it's Firefox. With Firefox, I'm notified of updates by a red arrow, in the upper right portion of my screen. I'm concerned that your Favorites and links did not get fully transferred to Firefox. A consideration would be to arrange your IE favorites in such a way that Firefox will make the download, then Uninstall Firefox and then download it again, then it will possibly transfer everything. I noticed that last 023 in your Hijack This log may have a file missing. I say "may have" , because Hijack This is not always fully dependable in recognizing files, in some of the entries. That missing file indication would be for your Linksys Router, so it is something to watch for possible problems. If you are feeling up to it, you might check the file and see if it is actually missing, but if everything is running good, it does not seem to be problematical. What I know about wireless, is almost zip. That said, I do know that proper configuration of its safety features is paramount. If I had wireless that would be first on my list, to read up on it and be sure I was protected 100%. Wireless can be seriously hazardous, without the proper safety modifications. I would recommend you do an "All Files" search for those dlls and Trojans. Be sure your PC is set to see "hidden files". Also empty the MS Virus vault. Then, when finished, since your system appears clean, this would be a good time to reset your System Restore points, to get rid of any parasites hiding there. Here's the drill. One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal. To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. (winXP) 1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. 3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK I'll leave this open for a couple of weeks, in case you have any problems. Please, use Firefox, it is a barrier against Internet Parasites. Good luck and safe flying. :wavey:
