Hello ccushing and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you either (1) configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning, and leave the rest disabled most of the time, or (2) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
You have P2P Networking on your computer. I recommend removing it along with the File Sharing program that it came installed with. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use Add/Remove Program to remove the File Sharing program and any reference to Altnet and P2P Networking. Go to your control panel, then to add/remove programs…uninstall P2P networking…If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless File Sharing add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\Colin\Application Data\emia.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\m?hta.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Colin\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\DLHelperEXE.exe

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Hi Alan -

Thanks for helping me. I did the HJT scan and removed the items you suggested, including P2P. I also removed P2P using Control Panel-Add/Remove.

I could not find any of these files:
C:\Documents and Settings\Colin\Application Data\emia.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\m?hta.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Colin\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\DLHelperEXE.exe

I also removed AVG using Control Panel-Add/Remove. What other virus programs should I remove?

I did a Spybot S&D scan as well, but it said it could not fix "BackWeb lite".

Finally, sometimes I get a small pop-up in the lower right saying "Symantec Virus Auto-Protect is disabled", but when I check Symantec it appears to be enabled. Any idea?

New HJT logfile below.

Thanks,
Colin

I also removed AVG using Control Panel-Add/Remove. What other virus programs should I remove?

I see signs of F-Secure Internet Security in your log. Do you have this program installed on your computer still?

I did a Spybot S&D scan as well, but it said it could not fix "BackWeb lite".

This is an optional removal for your computer. It will look for program updates for your computer but is known to be a resource hog. You can read about it here

Finally, sometimes I get a small pop-up in the lower right saying "Symantec Virus Auto-Protect is disabled", but when I check Symantec it appears to be enabled. Any idea?

You may need to uninstall\reinstall Norton Internet Security to get the program to work correctly again. Many items are known to try to disable antivirus programs to have better access to your computer. If you have any problem with the uninstall process you will need to go to the Symantec website and get the removal tool than reinstall the program.

Thank you for removing P2P Networking. Many posters refuse to remove this even after we let them know that it can and will add bad items to their computer. Then they can not figure out why their computer is still not working correctly.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O16 - DPF: {D7A7442D-85A9-475F-82F9-65ED4110B4C5} (iiittt Class) - http://gpstool.globaladserver.com/v30/gpstool.cab

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Automatic updates for ViewPoint products such as ViewPoint Media Player (as bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Compuserve, etc) Recommended to check here and remove with Add/Remove Programs.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some experts think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it.
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

If everything is working well when you reply back, I'll give you some links to help keep the computer clean.
I did not see F-Secure or Backweb under Add/Remove. I also did a search for "backweb" and got nothing.

Fixed the things in HJT you recommended. Log below.

Thanks,
Colin

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
OK…disabled/deleted F-secure. Also downloaded/installed the 2 Spyware programs. Will switch to Firefox as well. This may be a dumb question, but why is it with Spybot and Ad-Aware I can do a scan, fix the selected problems, then do another scan and there are still more and/or the same problems? My machine is running noticeably faster, thanks so much for your help! I've PayPal'd in $5.
Some items take multiple scans with these programs to remove all components of the infection.

You can run the following scan to see if anything else shows up.

  • Double-click it to run it.
  • Read then accept the agreement.
  • Check Drive, and select all local drives, scan all files, then press 'scan'. (This may take a while and will not fix anything)
  • Once it finds something, it will prompt you so click OK.
  • When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
  • Highlight it, copy it (CTRL+C), and paste (CTRL+V) it in your next reply.

That came up clean. If Ad-aware and Spybot S&D continue to find items, you may want to run scans with them in Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

With Firefox, is there a way to allow popups other than through Allowed Sites? I am used to using Panicware, which allows you to Ctrl-click when you want a popup to work. Panicware doesn't seem to support Firefox yet.

I also can't get things like sportsline.com's auto-refresh on their live scoring to work.

Open Norton Antivirus and click reports. In quarantined items click "view report" and in the window that opens click Quarantined Items. Highlight each line in the left column and click Delete Item from the toolbar above. Repeat this procedure for the Backup Items.
This process may be slightly different on Norton Antivirus Corporate.

Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter')

Go to the following folder and delete everything in it but not the Temp folder itself:

C:\Documents and Settings\Colin\Local Settings\Temp\

The rest of the entries in that log were orphaned registry entries that will cause no harm. :)

With Firefox, is there a way to allow popups other than through Allowed Sites?

Not that I'm aware of. :(

I don't seem to have Norton…but I opened Symantec AV and went to View/Quarantine, but nothing was listed.
