You are doin well MwWy and continue to get your father to stay off the computer. We are nearly fiished with your log. It is looking really good.

1. We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

2. Open HJT, SCan and place a checkmark beside the following item:

O21 - SSODL: System - {A4D5567C-06FA-4B6A-B4FC-172EFEECF88B} - vr_sys.dll (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed, ckick Fix checked and exit HJT.

3. REBOOT your system into Safe MODE

OK MeWy, pay very close attention to the following. Your log appears clear at this time. The following is a list of ESSENTIAL cleanup procedures that must be completed as soon as possible and also a list of recommendations that you MUST follow. Once you have done all this, post me a log from your father's profile and we will have a look at what he has got going.

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren

Good Job MeWy

Just a little tweak to your Dad's log and everything should be fine.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

(Procedure previously discussed)

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each the following entry:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wupd] C:\WINNT\system32\win32.exe

Now with the item selected, delete it by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

(Procedure already discussed)

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file, and DELETE it (if it is present):

C:\WINNT\system32\win32.exe

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Congratulations, your dad's log shows that his SYSTEM IS CLEAN

Remember to Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Hi MeWy,

It is me again.

It has been brought to my attention by senior staff here at the school that I have overlooked a bad site in your log and that it should be dealt with as soon as possible to avoid any reoccurence of your problems.

1. If you would please send me a fresh HijackThis log , I will try and remedy this situation as soon as possible.

2. Is your ISP in Kiev? Or are you aware of any reason why your system would have a link to a KIEV- based Internet Service Provider?

I sincerely regret any inconvenience that this may be causing you.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi MeWy, This problem should not take too long to remedy. I am happy to see that the rest of your log is still clean. Good work.

Here it is in a nutshell. Your ISP is in Australia, correct? But looking at the 017 entries in HJT, your stuff is being hijacked through California and Kiev. Not quite what we want.

1. So please, open HJT, click SCAN, and place a checkmark beside the following entries:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{FC0F6260-DEFA-49B7-9B29-B1817D89014E}: NameServer = 69.50.176.198,195.225.176.153
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\VxD\MSTCP: NameServer = 69.50.176.198,195.225.176.153
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\VxD\MSTCP: NameServer = 69.50.176.198,195.225.176.153
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\VxD\MSTCP: NameServer = 69.50.176.198,195.225.176.153

Now, with all windows closed, please clock Fix checked and EXIT the program.

2. REBOOT your system.

3. Please send me a fresh HJT log for final verification.

Regards,

Trevuren
