Hi yvonnedeverry;

Please copy this into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to read as you work. This will reduce errors and will be less stressful for you.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Then,
Please download and install Ad-Aware SE according to the following instructions. If you already have this program, please make sure it is the latest version (Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05) and has been updated today. Then run full systems scans as described below.

Install and how to use the NEW Ad-aware SE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

Reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Next:

Please download the free MWAV antivirus tool from here:
ftp://ftp.microworldsystems.com/download/tools/mwav.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it.  Follow the prompts to scan your system for viruses.  Then please copy for me the log of infected files from the BOTTOM panel of the scan window.

Next:
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

  7. Reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, along with the Ewido scan and the log of infected files from the BOTTOM panel of the scan window of the MWAV antivirus tool .

Please use the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.
Thanks so much - I was not able to download the mwav tool as this link was invalid, but I did everything else. Here is the hijack log and the other log:

Hi yvonnedeverry

Your Hijack This log seems to be clean, but the question is, how is your PC ?
Do the problems still persist, or is everything better now ? Sometimes running Ad-Aware(updated) is all that is needed.

Personally, I would say that the following Protection recommendations are mandatory for safe web surfing, but that's just my opinion.

Protection Recommendations:

If you dont have these three FREE programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system, but only one of each.

If you think everything is okay, please do the following.

Download http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php, install and run it to delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK
I did all this, but I still have 44 processes running as soon as I turn onmy computer. Can I get rid of some of these? Thanks
Hi yvonnedeverry;

Use this link to see what Processes are and which you can safely manage.
http://www.what-process.com/lists.aspx

I have 45 Processes, or more, running normally on my PC. That is not a problem, in my opinion, but how many CPUs are being used could be. I find that I'm using between 2% and 5%, which is next to nothing. Many people run much higher CPU usage normally.

You will find there are a lot of svchost.exe running. They are necessary, as are many others that may look odd, but are critical to the operation of your PC. Caution should be used when deciding to stop a Process and be sure you know what it is.

Whatever you decide to do, only stop them one at a time, after thouroughly researching what they are. Then, if nothing drastic happens, you could select one more and so on.
Personally, I don't worry about how many are running, unless they cause problems.

Hope this was useful.
Glad we could be of help. :D
