I'm a garden-variety pc user who is so annoyed with internet criminals I am even willing to try to learn how to use HijackThis.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Diane, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. I don't see much wrong in your log and you did not tell me if you had a problem I will remove what I see, one is a hostile ActiveX called Netster and do a little cleaning, a check for trojans and we will see how that works. Please do this in the order posted:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

2) We need a folder around the HJT.exe on your Desktop to hold the HJT.exe, the log that should be there and backups for safety. Go back to that Desktop folder and RIGHT click a blank spot and make a new folder called HJT. Move the HJT.exe and the log into that folder. Thanks.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/1489fa1c822f5b…ip/RdxIE601.cab
-Netster

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

(I see no evidence of trojans, if you wish to do a check it will not hurt)
Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

If you wish to learn more about HJT this is a great tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial42.html I also want you to know that free training classes is available at several sites including this one.

I also wanted you to know I have 10 foot tall Oleander blooming in red and white. Just sprayed for Oleander worms yesterday.

Thanks…pskelley

PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE: (Optional for you but it will not hurt either, make sure you turn it right back on if you do it)
When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instruction:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam
Hi pskelley: Thank you so much for replying to my help request. The last couple of days I was unable to bring up any tomcoyote urls on either my desktop or laptop- so I was starting to worry. But here it is, and here you are- thank goodness. And I am glad to hear (to say the least) that there is nothing fatal in my log at the moment. (I was uncertain- because many odd things begin to happen when one avoids reinstalling the OS for years at a time. ) I will proceed to follow your instructions as carefully as possible and report back when I am finished. This might take a little while, since I will have to crawl through the steps. I've never worked on a computer at this level of tinkering- and am not the type to want to either. I never thought I'd have the courage to try. But thanks to this forum, even exceptionally timid computer users like me have a chance to learn to defend themselves. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to learn these crucial survival skills. A 10-ft. high oleander? I'm impressed! (And wish us both a worm-free life.) Here in the southwest the current heat wave has turned gardening into a trial of endurance for all concerned. Of course, oleanders can thrive under conditions that many other plants cannot tolerate. Thanks again for your excellent instructions! Diane
Hi Diane, That's not problem, take your time. I have some great information to help you stay clean and safe once I see that new log and it is clean. I can also tell you that we recently changed software here at TC and every once in a while it acts up and I can't even get in. This did happen about two days ago so if you could reach other sites I would not be to concerned. Oleander: I just planted these under two years ago and they love the weather. About 2 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and they like the rain and the sun. I am going to need at ladder to trim them. Good luck…Phil :wavey:
Hi again Phil:

Thank you so much for all the useful info. Here's the new log, after following your mercifully-easy-to-understand instructions. The only glitch I ran into was CounterSpy's insistence on clearing each and every one of the (hundreds of) changes CCleaner made to Default User's Folders. It would not remember to Allow as a class, but after an hour or so of abject clickclickclick I realized I could probably turn off Counterspy's monitor in that department. That was easy- once it occurred to me, that is. I'll turn it on again next time I boot up.

Like so many other gardeners, I have Zone Envy for your tropical possibilities there on the gulf. Oh, the frost-free life! I imagine a jungle of giant fanciful leaves and bright bold flowers the size of saucers. I haven't seen oleanders here that needed ladders.

I'll be checking in to follow your helpful trail of breadcrumbs to the next level.
Cheers, and thanks. Hope this new logfile is free of pests.
Diane

Hi Diane, You can turn your spyware program off if you have to, just stay offline when you do it. We often have to shut down spyware programs to use HJT as they will stop the fix.
I would also appreciate it if you would not doublespace your log, you did the first one perfectly so you must have used Wordpad on the second.
Do this:
Open HJT and choose Do a system scan and save a logfile
Then wait until the logfile appears as it will be in Notepad.
Then choose Edit at the top then Select All
The log will be highlited, then just copy and paste it to the thread. Thanks.

Looks like a clean log  , I am interested if the trojan scan found anything. and if everything is running as it should be. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I see you are still running SP1, before you consider SP2, here is some information you will need to review:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

Last, you have not created the folder for HJT I requested in my first post. The log and backup is probably on the desktop where it can get deleted easily by accident. In this case we will not need to restore either of the items you removed, but you should know how to properly position your HijackThis. When time permits review this information, the video will only work if you have the proper programs to support the format.

Thanks…Phil Will leave the thread open for a couple of days in the event you have a question.
