I posted my log about 4 days ago but have since downloaded the newer version of HijackThis and ran a new log. Currently, my homepage is always automatically set to about:blank and I get annoying popups. Also, pornographic links now appear in my Favorites list for IE. I have tried Adaware, Spybot, etc. and it always comes back. Here is my latest log. Can anyone help?

Hi csnyder,

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
    • Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click "Save Log…". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
    • Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click the cwsserviceremove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning.
    • Answer Yes when prompted to add the contents to the registry.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Thanks for your willingness to help. I was able to complete the first 5 steps that you gave to me. However, every time that I visited the TrendMicro Housecall website, my Internet Explorer was forced to shut down and a dialog box told me that there was an error and IE will now close and if this problem continues to restart the computer. Therefore, I was unable to run the TrendMicro scan. The homepage was also turned back into about:blank after opening IE and popups appeared. Here are the two logs that you requested.

Hi csnyder,

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check these items:

Now please close all windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking on Fix Checked.

Then, reboot in Safe mode. To reboot in Safe mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

You will need to configure Windows XP to show all files and folders.
1. Open My Computer.
2.Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
3. Select the View Tab.
4.Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
5.Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
6.Click Yes to confirm.
7.Click OK.

Then, delete these files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfclg32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\addko.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SbCIe02a.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntzj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\vybyq.dll

Then, run CWShredder:
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
Then, run AboutBuster and save the logs:
Then, remove the offending service:
  • Double-click the cwsserviceremove.reg file.
  • Answer Yes when prompted to add the contents to the registry.
Then, delete Temp Files. To delete temp files:
Click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there.

Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

Then, delete Temporary Internet Files. To delete Temporary Internet Files:
Open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Then, reboot (in the normal mode) and post a new log in this thread.

Do use the Vaio support agent?
tj416,

No problems this time around. I don't think that I use the vaio support agent, if I do then I don't know about it. Here are the logs from HijackThis and AboutBuster.

Super Thanks again for your help. What's next?
Hi csnyder,

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check these items:
O16 - DPF: {640B39C1-D713-464F-92C3-75BD972B95EE} - http://www.sidestep.com/get/k00719/sb02a.cab

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntzj.exe (file missing)

The following items are optional. It is upto you whether to check them or not.

This item is a part of ZTGServerswitch which is a part of Sony's Vaio support agent - designed by Support.com. It isn't required if you don't wish to use the Vaio support agent and it is also regarded as spyware.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

These entries belong to Real Player and Quick Time Player respectively and are not required during startup as the can be started manually and I suggest you check these items(Note: Real and QuickTime both need to be turned off in the program or they will simply reload later):
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

7.Click OK.

Then, delete these files (if present):
c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs- Delete this file only if you decided to check its item.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntzj.exe

Then, reboot (in the normal mode) and post a new log in this thread .
tj416,

I could not find the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntzj.exe in order to delete it. It was on the first list of files to delete also but was not present then either. Here is my log.

tj416,

I was able to disable the Remote Procedure Call but then was unable to follow the "Delete an NT service" instruction. HijackThis said that the service was not in the registry. Also, it did not appear again when I ran the HijackThis scan so I was unable to check it and then click on fix. Here is the new log.

tj416, Thank you very much for all of your help. Things seems to be working normally now. Would it be better to use a different web browser like Firefox instead of IE? Thanks again.
Hi csnyder,

Yes, I do recommend Firefox over Internet Explorer.

Don't forget to re-hide all files and folders. To re-hide all files and folders:
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
To prevent re-infection in the future:
  • I suggest you download Spyware Blaster to prevent the installation of Spyware in the first place.
  • IE-Spyad puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all and I suggest you download it.
  • Another excellent program I recommend is SpywareGuard. It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
  • I recommend that you read a thead titled So how do I get infected in the first place? by Tony Klein which informs you on how to tighten the security of your PC.
Take care,
TJ
