Hi theehound,

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please download HijackThis version 1.99.1 from here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip
and make sure to unzip it to a permanent folder. Then please run HijackThis, click Scan and Save log, and post the new log here. I would be happy to take a look at it.

Hi theehound,

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check these items:
O13 - DefaultPrefix:

Unless you have set up a user style sheet, have HijackThis check this item .
O19 - User stylesheet: C:\WINDOWS\windows.dat

Now please close all windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking on Fix Checked.

Then,reboot in Safe mode. To reboot in Safe mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

You will need to configure Windows XP to show all files and folders.
1. Open My Computer.
2.Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
3. Select the View Tab.
4.Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
5.Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
6.Click Yes to confirm.
7.Click OK.

Then, delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\windows.dat- Delete this file only if you didn't set up a user style sheet.

Then, delete Temp Files. To delete temp files:
Click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there.

Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

Then, delete Temporary Internet Files. To delete Temporary Internet Files:
Open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Then, reboot (in the normal mode) and post a new log in this thread.

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check these items:

Now please close all windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking on Fix Checked.

Then, please open HJT again and choose Config, select Misc Tools and use the "Delete on reboot" and enter the full path of this item in the dialogue window:
C:\WINDOWS\windows.dat

Then, reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Download Killbox:

Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then,reboot in Safe mode. To reboot in Safe mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Then, open HijackThis, run a scan and check these items:
O13 - DefaultPrefix:
O19 - User stylesheet: C:\WINDOWS\windows.dat

Now please close all windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking on Fix Checked.

Then, run killbox to delete windows.dat:

Please run Killbox.
Click "Replace on Reboot" and check the "Use Dummy" box.
Paste the following file into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box.
- C:\WINDOWS\windows.dat
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button.
Click "Yes" at the Replace on Reboot prompt.
Click "Yes" at the Pending Operations prompt to restart your computer.

Then, post a fresh HijackThis log in this thread.

I did as described and have the following comments and questions:

In safe mode 019 - User stylesheet: C:\windows\windows.dat does NOT appear in the Hijackthis log.

When running killbox there was no Reboot prompt neither Pending Operations prompt.

This is a portable pc with several users. Is that a problem?

One more comment… according the list of Processes in the Task Manager I havnt many programs running and mem usage is not a problem but it feels like memory is slowly filling up.
I am running XP and I havnt had any problems earlier but now its very unstabil and shuts down without any warnings.

It looks like 019 - user stylesheet…blabla has been removed
When I rebooted the pc it seemed faster… so maybe the problem has been solved?

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet. Please go to
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

Then, reboot (in the normal mode) and post a new log in this thread.

One comment: I am running XP but havnt upgrated yet due some programs I am running that may not be supported by SP2. I do understand that can this be an issue and will check these programs so I can upgrate to SP2.

Thank you for your help. I havnt any problems with the Martfinder anymore and it seems stabile. Do you think the O13 - Defaulprefix thing will cause me any problems? Well I guess you do otherwise you wouldnt still try to remover it.
