Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Search for and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msupd4.exe

Browse to your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all files in the folder, do not delete the folder itself. Empty your Recylce Bin. Run CCleaner.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new HijackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Thanks!
Thank you for your help. I have followed your instructions but came across a couple of problems. 1) Where u ask to search microsoft updates service 4 and asked to stop the service, when I found it it already said stopped. 2) In the log of items (from hijackthis) to check and fix the one called 023 - Service: Microsoft Updates Service 4 (MsUpdate4) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\msupd4.exe (file missing) - I couldnt find this to check and fix. 3) Where I had to search for C:\WINDOWS\system32\msupd4.exe and delete file, once again I couldnt find to delete. Here is a new log otherwise after following your instructions, and thanks again Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 3:28:21 PM, on 11/05/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\swdoctor.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgbhp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wdfmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\alg.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\SuperNerd Internet\dialer.exe C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = www.supernerd.com.au R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = www.supernerd.com.au R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = www.supernerd.com.au R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = www.supernerd.com.au R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Supernerd Internet R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = O1 - Hosts: 66.218.75.184 mail.yahoo.com O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Run and scan with HijackThis, with all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

Hi, one other thing i have noticed is I ran spybot today (about 5pm) and down the bottom left hand corner where it mentions what it is searching, I have still noticed wwwcoolsearch "things". Is this ok? Anyways, have followed your instructions and here is a new log file. Thanks again for your help. What you saw with Spybot is just the list it goes through as it searches your computer… nothing to worry about.

Good Work!. Your log looks CLEAN!!.

How is your computer behaving? Any of the previous symptoms?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. My computer is much better now and more importantly im not seeing some of the sites azesearch was sending me to (UGH!!!), thank you once again for all your help, extremely appreciated. Keep up the good work. This forum is excellent and valuable thank you for providing it
You're very welcome. Glad I was able to help! :D

To clean up any remnants that we might not have been able to get with HijackThis, you might want to do an online scan or two. A couple good ones are Panda ActiveScan and TrendMicro HouseCall. Let them fix anything they find. Reboot between each scan.

Along with Spybot, if you dont have it, download and install Ad-Aware. Visit this page for proper configuration of the programs. Run and scan with both, letting them fix whatever they find. Remember to reboot between each scan.

After that reset your System Restore Point. This will ensure a nice clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

Along with Ad-Aware and Spybot, you might also want to look into installing SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD. You can grab them from the links in my sig. The programs are free and can be updated, so please remember to do so. Installing these will go a long way in preventing reinfection.

Other than that… keep Windows updated, keep your protection programs updated, scan often, and…

Surf Safe!
