google search hijacked

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

If I initiate a search in Google toolbar the results shows pages of other search engines offering to conduct my search for me rather than Google searching direct. I have downloaded hijack this, saved a log but not sure what to delete. It informs me that I have several files containing the same IP address . Delete file itself rather than fix each item. Same IP in 01 items and wants to delete hosts file located at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
We are sorry for the delay in answering you. If you are still having computer problems

Hello bluesky2005 and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Download HijackThis from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".
Close the WinZip self Extractor window.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click HijackThis.exe. Click "Do a system scan and save a logfile". When the scan is done, notepad will open with the log in it. In notepad on the edit tab, click "select all" then on the edit tab again select "copy". Click the "add reply" button to make a post in this thread. When the new window opens to place your reply, Hold "ctrl" on your keyboard and tap the "V" key. This should paste the log into the box. Then click "add reply".

Do not worry about posting in the "What To Do When You Have No Response In 5 Days?" thread.
I will receive an email notification of your reply and will respond as soon as possible.

I will leave the removal of Stardust Screen Saver up to you then. If you do decide to remove it, check in Add/Remove Programs to see if there is an entry there. Than remove the following entries with HijackThis if they are still present.

O4 - Global Startup: Stardust Screen Saver Control 2003.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\SCMain.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Stardust Wallpaper Control 2003.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\WCMain.exe

Your log is clean. How is the computer behaving?
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
