Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:
Network Security Service (NSS)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for:

netgl.exe
sysne.exe

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.

4. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

5. Delete the following files if present:

C:\WINDOWS\iptw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\netgl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysne.exe
C:\WINDOWS\netjs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\addqx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\mjfbz.dll

(and any other files with the same name that end in .dll, .exe or .dat, you may find them right next to each other, example - appsw.exe, appsw.dll, appsw.dat)
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

6. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. It will ask to scan the system again, let it. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

7. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

8. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

9. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

10. Reboot into normal mode.

11. Download and run this online virus scan:<—Important
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

12. Reboot and post a fresh HJT log back here by using the add reply button below, and lets see how we did, MrC
Wow! Lots of work, but we did it! Thanx loads!

Below is my latest HJT log. Now how do I get rid of "Cool Web Search" junk? AdAware finds about 17 things every time it's run- even if I run it twice in a row!

BTW, I WILL make a donation for your help, when this is all thru (via PayPal).

Well, I THOUGHT we did it… Internet Explorer takes forever to load. AND Norton System works is messed up. I get no automatic Antivirus protection and can't update it OR uninstall it to reinstall it. Well, that's what I've discovered so far… Doug

Internet Explorer takes forever to load.

AND Norton System works is messed up. I get no automatic Antivirus protection and can't update it OR uninstall it to reinstall it.

Try this first:

Make sure you clean up all the temp files frequently , I like this program: CCleaner
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html

Download and install it.

Run it, on the Windows Page, Internet Explorer, check 'temporary internet files'

System > check 'empty recycle bin' and 'temporary files'
Applications > nothing checked

Issues > nothing checked

Go to Options on top > Settings > uncheck everything

Then hit the 'analyze button' to see what's being deleted and then 'run cleaner'

NOTE: You can also add what ever you want to be deleted, that's up to you, but what I suggest is a must.
Do this for all users
—————————————————–

Clean up the registry:
I use RegCleaner, link below
http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/…-cleaner4.3.htm

Download and install it.
Click on the RegCleanr.exe
Tools (at the top) > Registry Cleanup > Do Them All
Then 'Select' (at top left) > choose ALL
'Remove Selected" (at bottom right)
A backup of all that was removed will be made, just choose 'Backups' (top right) to view them, you can delete them when you're confident they're no longer needed.

—————————————————————-

Finally run defrag:
Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
Here's an excellent alternative tool - Diskeeper Lite
http://www.webattack.com/get/dkeeperlite.shtml

See how Internet Explorer is now, if you still have a problem , lets try to repair IE:
There's two ways to do that here, I would try the SFC first:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

Let me know , MrC
(I run a few prgs that delete temp files regularly). OK, before I read your last note, I did the following: uninstalled WinXP Service Pack 2. Reinstalled it. IE works fine now. HOWEVER, I'm STILL not able to get Norton Antivirus running. At first, I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks 04 and could not. AFTER the Srv Pk 2 reinstall, I could and did uninstall Norton Syswks. Then I reinstalled it, but it did NOT install Antivirus. Everything else is there, but I can't install NAV now. I'm checking the Symantec boards, but can't find anything yet. Any ideas? Doug
Nevermind. Looks like I finally got things back in order. Norton took quite awhile but I'm all set now. Whew! WHat a mess. Doug
OK, good to here it's back to normal, lets keep it that way.

I'll leave you with……..

Some preventive maintenance:

——————Must have or do:—————–

Now that you're clean: <—-Important Step!!!!
Delete your system restore files and create a new restore point:
(ME and XP users only)

XP system restore

ME system restore

Visit Windows Update and install all the lastest critical updates.

Install these two free programs, they sit in the backround and protect your system from spy and adware being installed on your system, also from your browser being hijacked. Check for updates weekly.
