I have downloaded the most current version of HijackThis, put it in a safe folder and run. The new log is pasted below.

Hi - having problems with About Blank hijack. It is causing my IE browser to open to About:Blank, adds numerous links to my bookmarks and I am also getting weird pop-ups about Windows Security Center (I don't have SP2) and suspicious activity. Upon startup, IE opens automatically to About:Blank. I am on dial up. I would like some assistance in getting rid of all this.

Thanks

Hello johnnyd_lmims and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Delete the cwsserviceremove.zip folder.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
    • Click Start. Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
    • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
  • Disable the offending service.
    • Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
    • Scroll down and find the service called : Workstation NetLogon Service
    • When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.

Hi Alan -
Thank you for taking the time to assist me with this.

I have followed the instructions you provided and still have not been able to remove this About:Blank problem. Also note, that when I tried to go to the TrendMicro Website, I get the problem encountered window and IE is shut down. 1st time there, I was able to accept the activeX security prompt, then it get the problem, subsequent times, as soon as I get to the website, the problem encountered window comes on.

Step 1 - downloaded CWShredder
Step 2 - Downloaded & updated AboutBuster
Step 3 - Downloaded cwsserviceremove
Step 4 - Folder options set as requested
Step 5 - Disabled offending service - first try, it was not running. Rebooted and stopped service & disabled for startup

First in Safe Mode: (it gave me option of my domain name or Administrator, chose my domain - note, computer is set up for one user as my domain name)
Step 1 - Ran CWShredder - Successful - 7 items resolved
Step 2 - ran cwsserviceremove - merged
Step 3 - Ran AboutBuster - log is below
Step 4 - ran HiJackThis - scanned - in safe mode, many of the keys were not found
the ones found and FIXED:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mfcls.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcls.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cryz32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\cryz32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ipwt.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipwt.exe
Step 5 - Delete files - cryz32.exe and ipwt.exe. The other two were not found in the folders as described. I did a search and found them in folder windows\prefetch - but did not delete. They had odd names associated with them.
Step 6 - Ran Cleanmgr - did as instructed.
Step 7 - Rebooted. First reboot and IE opened upon restart, but could not find the page (about:blank). Rebooted again and IE opens with About:Blank on start up. So I went back to safe mode and tried the Admin user, but results are the same.
Step 8 - TrendMicro website - cannot get onto it for the scan.

This is so frustrating!! I appreciate your help, I am really glad I was directed to this website - looks like I'm not alone. I was tempted to try the HJT fix while in normal mode, but decided to wait and see what your thoughts are.

Thanks again - John
I do understand that this can be very frustrating. We will get you cleaned up soon.

You stated that you have rebooted several times during and since the fix. This infection will change each time you reboot the computer. Please only reboot when instructed below and try to stay off of the Internet as much as possible until the computer is clean. After posting the new log please do not reboot the computer until I have replied again.

You have all of the tools to fix the infection so I'll get right to the fix.
    • Scroll down and find the service called : Workstation NetLogon Service << If this service is already stopped, just set it to disabled.
  • Fix with Hijackthis:
    • Open Hijackthis, Run a scan and check the following:

      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\avzev.dll/sp.html#55135
      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\avzev.dll/sp.html#55135

    • With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.
  • Delete the following files:C:\WINDOWS\ntsm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkxx32.exe
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK

    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free Online Antivirus scans:
    • Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.

    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Hi Alan -

I followed your instructions completely, no rebooting unless instructed to do so. :D

About:Blank is still hanging around. I completed three online scans, I have those logs if needed. They found some things, fixed some and not others. IE still opens at startup, but doesn't load the About:Blank page itself, but it is still in the Location bar. And I still get some weird pop ups while online, plus the bogus Windows Security Center warning icon and popup - well, I think it is bogus - when it originally came up, I clicked and it took me to a site to buy StopZilla to "help me" get rid of any spyware or virus.

The thing that bugs me, is why can't I see all of the keys when in safe mode when I run HiJackThis…..? I have posted a HiJackThis log during Safe Mode, the About Buster log and the HiJackThis log following lrunning the online AV Scans.

Online AV scans from Bitdefender, Pandasoftware and RAV.

here is the log from HiJackThis while in Safe Mode:

Once again, thanks for your time. If you would like the AntiVirus reports/logs, let me know.

The service name has changed in this one. Remember not to reboot the computer after the log is posted. We'll see if the fix holds this time. If it still remains, we'll need to take a different approach.

    • Scroll down and find the service called : Network Security Service << If this service is already stopped, just set it to disabled.
  • Fix with Hijackthis:
    • Open Hijackthis, Run a scan and check the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
      O2 - BHO: Class - {67AAF0FB-1186-9154-CBA3-D8205B92C911} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaqo.dll

      O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\appba32.exe (file missing)
    • With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.
  • Delete the following files:C:\WINDOWS\netyh32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msnq.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\appba32.exe
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.

You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
      Bitdefender
      Pandasoftware
Trend Micro << Click Auto Clean
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing

Hi Alan -

I think I'm clean!!! Way cool! B)

No more IE on startup, no About:Blank in the location, no more links, popups or little bubbles telling me my system is infected and to buy certain spyware killing software. IE now only opens to google.

I ran 5 of the 6 online AntiVirus scans, finishing with TrendMicro and then McAfee both reporting that no infections were found. I then shut down and upon restart ran HiJackThis and I believe everything is gone. I also ran my Nortons AntiVirus and for the first time in a couple of weeks it reported that there are no infections or suspicious files either. :)

The only key that wasn't found was:
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\appba32.exe (file missing)
and this executable wasn't found:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appba32.exe

Everything else was found, "Fix Checked" and/or deleted as instructed.

Here are my last AboutBuster and HJT this logs. Hopefully you concur that my system is finally clean….

Let me know if there is anything else that I should be concerned with or need to get cleaned.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to assist me. I am glad I found this site and you were very helpful. Once I'm certain that everything is clean, I'll gladly make a donation to keep this site running - in case I need help again in the future and for anyone else who gets these nasties.

-John
Your new log is clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Hi Alan - WHEW! I'm clean and thanks for the quick response, too! I was just looking thru Windows Help about getting rid of my old Restore files, so thanks for saving me some time there. :) I have had and have run Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D1.3 scanners. I checked for updates and they are up to date. That was the first things I tried when I first got this About:Blank noise. I'll take a look and download the ones you listed for help in keeping my system clean(er). As for Windows updates, I'll get everything for SP1 that I can. I'm still staying away from SP2 since I had a nightmare of an update install that required Dell Tech walking me thru reinstalling windows xp and advising me not to install SP2. I have since received SP2 on CD but still hesitant to give it a go. I have an idea of how I might have gotten the infection in the first place, and I'm slapping myself for it. Normally I either do the cntl-g to kill pop-ups or use the little red-x to kill a window, but I remember hitting "NO" on some spyware warning popup message and then hearing my computer grinding away - but at the same time Norton had just finished downloading updates. Of all things, I was researching sites about Cholesterol. I must have misspelled a search and instead I got sent to a not-so-healthy site instead - which I killed but not before being swamped with popups and multiple browser windows. - John
