I get the following error message every startup or if i try to run scanregw,

Scanregw has caused an error in
KERNEL32.DLL
Scanregw will now close.

If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer

I checked Symantec.com and there are some trojans that rename scanregw.exe. But the fix says to back up my registry (using scanregw) before i change it. Since scanregw doesn't work I'm stuck. Here's the HJT log;

OK… scanregw.exe seems to be in the proper place… so I think it is legit. The virus version is usually installed in C:\Windows\System

But to be sure… browse to C:\Windows\scanregw.exe, right click, check to see if it is from Microsoft.

Let me know.
Ok, checked C:\WINDOWS\Scanregw.exe, properties says, version 4.90.0.3000, Description, Registry Checker, Copyright © Microsoft Corp. 1997-2000, size 124 KB (126,976 bytes)
Ok… thats good. Not sure why scanregw is causing that error :scratch: Can't find anything about that specific error through any of my searches either. Only thing that comes to mind is that maybe scanregw has been corrupted somehow. Have you tried replacing it with the original from the WinMe disc? If not maybe give that a try.
Thanks for the help Kotaguy, I have an old Dell with Windows ME. It came with a disk to re-install WinME (I don't want to do that). I tried the Microsoft site to see if I could download the version on scanregw.exe, but no luck. I think I'll buy a new system with Windows XP. Terry
Before you go to that extreme… try following the instructions here to extract scanregw.exe from the install disc you have.

Extract it to C:\WINDOWS\ and let it overwrite the file. See if that helps.
Thanks for sticking with me KotaGuy, I did the extract/overwrite and it said it worked. But when I restarted still get the same error msg; "Scanregw has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL Scanregw will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer" The computer seems to work ok, but I have to re-install my Zonealarm firewall every couple of days because it stops updating its virus definitions for some reason. I don't know if its just that WinME is so unstable or what, I've tried to keep up to date with all the Windows updates and patches. I'm on a 3 computer ethernet home network and the other computers are all WinME and they don't have the same problem as mine (they still have occasional blue screen system lock-ups). Thanks again for your help! :)
Ok… so we know you have a good scanregw.exe file now. I try not to do this that often… but I honestly cannot say too many nice things about WinME. I found it to be a very unstable product even when fully patched. It's good that you're thinking about switching to XP… it's a much better OS overall. But, in the meantime… lets see if we can't figure this out for you :) The main problem with kernel32 errors is almost anything can cause them. I've never seen an instance where scanregw has caused it though. And I haven't been able to find a thing searching the net for that either. Is there any way you could be more specific with the error you are getting when it happens? Is there any other information given with the error, like an error code of some sort? If so, could you let me know what that is as it would help me in diagnosing the problem. Gonna have you try something else. Need to know a couple things about how your system is setup though. Is your hard drive split into multiple partitions(do you have more than just your C: drive… I'm not worried about your floppy or any CD/DVD drives you have)? How much RAM is installed in this computer? Let me know. Thanks!
Hi KotaGuy, just got back from Seoul. The error msg has no codes it comes up as "Scanregw has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL Scanregw will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer" No partitions on the hard drive, 256MB RAM Thanks!
Seoul was good, there having a nice spring. The flight is 12 1/2hrs, ugh! I made a starup disk on a floppy it that is what you mean and I found a fault log file under system information; ********************************************************************** Date 05/13/2005 Time 17:00 SCANREGW caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff78b50.
