Hi, I attempted to dl a "upgrade" for windows media player and as soon as i did, my computer went crazy. my desktop is now blue with the writing on it "Security Warning: A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trajan-Spy.HTML.Smitraud.c
*System can not function in normal mode.
Please check your security settings.
*Scan your PC with any available antivirus/spyware remover program to fix the problem."

I have scanned with Spybot-Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware 6.0 and have SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

Here is my log, any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Also, in the bottom right toolbar there is an icon that is a yellow triangle with a "!" in it and when i open it i get to an msn sponsored page that lists different spyware programs for sale. not sure where the icon is coming from and just thought i would mention this. thanks.
Hi drewski,

Since HijackThis does not scan the entire system and only certain areas are scanned to help diagnose the presence of undetected malware in some of the telltale places it hides. It is extremely important that you run a full system scan tool like Ad-aware SE and Spybot S&D. I would like to START with those steps and finish the cleanup of strays or undetected items with HJT. I have provided instructions on how to run scan with Ad-aware SE and Spybot S&D in this post.

1) Download, install, update and run a scan with Spybot S&D:
  • Download and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings.
  • In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
  • Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
  • Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ and then download and install all available Updates.
  • Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’
  • When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window.
  • Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
  • Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
  • REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.
2) Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
        • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
        • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Under Definitions:
        • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
    • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :
      • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
        • Scan Within Archives
      • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
        • choose all hard drives
      • Under Memory & Registry: all green
        • Scan Active Processes
        • Scan Registry
        • Deep Scan Registry
        • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
        • Scan my Hosts file
    • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
      • Under Shell Integration:
        • Move deleted files to recycle bin
      • Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
        • include addtional object information
        • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
        • include environment information
      • Under Alternate Data Streams:
        • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
        • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
    • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
      • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
        • Unload recognized processes during scanning
        • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
      • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
        • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
      • Under Log Files:
        • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
        • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
        • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
3) Prepare in your reply:
  • A fresh HijackThis log.
Note: You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please download HijackThis version 1.99.1 from here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip and post the new log from that version here.
Thank you so much for your help. After following steps for spybot and ad-aware, here is my new log:

thanks again
Hi drewski,

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall (if present):
SpyBlocs or eBlocs (optional)- This is a Suspect Anti-Spyware Product. See this list for more details. I strongly recommend that you remove it.

Then, open HijackThis, run a scan and check these items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.qfind.net/search.php?qq=%s
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.qfind.net/search.php?qq=%s
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.qfind.net/search.php?qq=%s
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.qfind.net/search.php?qq=%s
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.qfind.net/search.php?qq=%s
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.qfind.net/search.php?qq=%s
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.qfind.net/search.php?qq=%s
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.qfind.net/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.qfind.net/

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN Messenger] C:\winnt\system32\msmsgs.exe

If you decided to uninstall eBlocs or SpyBlocs, then check this item too.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyBlocs] C:\Program Files\eBlocs\SpyBlocs\GLFF.exe

Now please close all windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking on Fix Checked. When you click 'Fix checked' your security programs will warn you about the changes that are going on in the Registry. Make sure you ALLOW those changes.

Then, reboot in Safe mode. To reboot in Safe mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

You will need to configure Windows 2000 to show all files and folders.
1. Open My Computer.
2.Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
3. Select the View Tab.
4.Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
5.Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
6.Click Yes to confirm.
7.Click OK.

Then, delete these files:
C:\winnt\system32\msole32.exe
C:\winnt\popuper.exe
C:\winnt\system32\intmonp.exe
C:\winnt\system32\msmsgs.exe

Delete this folder only if you decided to uninstall SpyBlocs of eBlocs:
C:\Program Files\eBlocs

Then, delete Temp Files. To delete temp files:
Click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there.

Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

Then, delete Temporary Internet Files. To delete Temporary Internet Files:
Open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Then, reboot (in the normal mode) and post a new log in this thread.
Also, please mention if you're having trouble with your desktop.

And fix these entries too:
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {201B261D-7C57-4248-8719-9D19570858B3} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {201B261D-7C57-4248-8719-9D19570858B3} - (no file) (HKCU)

Thanks,
TJ
Thanks a ton for the help so far TJ.
My desktop seems alright, what problems with it should I be looking for?
My IE however is troublesome. Luckily I am able to access this page but I cannot get into my hotmail account or change my home page. When attempting either I am brought to www.quicknavigate.com. I see this is listed in my log but I am aprehensive about changing anything myself just on a hunch.
Also, I keep getting the following message from my Scotty the Windows Watchdog program:

Scotty the Windows Watchdog is on patrol and has detected a new IE Add-On has been installed on your system?
Do you approve? Click yes if this IE Add-On is allowed.

hp1BB8.tmp

C:\WINNT\system32\hp1BB8.tmp
No Description found
Company Name Not included in this program
No Copyright information included

The warning pops up about every 5 minutes and I keep rejecting it as it seems like it could be dangerous.

Here is my current log, and thanks again.

Hi drewski,

My desktop seems alright, what problems with it should I be looking for?

I meant problems like you're not able to change your wallpaper etc…

I see this is listed in my log but I am aprehensive about changing anything myself just on a hunch.

You did the right thing  , always wait for us.

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check these items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.quicknavigate.com/search.php?qq=%1

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.quicknavigate.com/

Then, delete these files (if present):
C:\winnt\system32\shnlog.exe
C:\winnt\system32\hp1BB8.tmp
C:\winnt\system32\intmon.exe

Hi TJ, after following your instructions and making a new log, I found that most of what I had fixed had returned, but not all. Here is the new log and thanks for helping.

Hi drewski,

After fixing i always get warnings from spywareguard and win patrol that the main search page etc. has been changed. is this normal?

Yes that is normal. Winpatrol and SpywareGuard monitor your registry, so they will alert you when changes have been made to the registry.

Your log looks clean. How is everything running?
