Click "Start", "Settings", and then click "Control Panel". Open the "Display" applet.
Click on "Desktop", "Customise Display…" and "Web".
In the box under "Web pages" look for a checkbox named "Security". If found select it and click "Delete".
The problem is that on that user, when you click display, the only tabs that are there are screensaver and settings. There is no desktop, no themes, no appearance. I t doesn't appear in safe mode either.
Click on start then run and type this in exactly as below.
sfc /scannow
You may get promted to insert yoru OS disk if so just insert it you dont need to click on anything. Let it scan your system and it will repair any missing or damaged OS files.
That's what I thought. I did what you told me by running sfc /scannow and nothing happened. Windows File Protection searches for all files, and then when the scan is complete, it just shuts down and says nothing. Should I still reinstall XP?
I am not asking you to reinstall XP. When you run that utlity it sometiomes asks you to install the operating system disk. If you ran the scan it would fix or reinstall any missing files.
I tried to do what the eldergeek website said to do, but when I tried to open the group policy editor it said that Windows cannot find it. Should I just try to do a system restore back to the beginning of April before all of this started, Would that work? Also when you turn off the computer, there is a blue screen with a small text (like the fatal error message I got when my computer crashed, however, the writing is very small, in the middle of the desktop and it goes away very quickly so I can't read what it says and the computer shuts down.
Once it has downloaded, double-click on the smitfraud.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes button.
Reboot your computer and you should now be able to change your desktop settings back to how you would like it. If your desktop still looks strange, go into your display properties and click on the Themes tab. Change the theme to Windows XP and you will now be using the default Windows XP settings. Then change them as you see fit.
To run the virus scan make sure you click the following
memory, registry, startup folders, system folders, services, drive (all drives will be added) then click on scan clean. When the scan is complete hilight all the files in the LOWER box. Then ctrl + c and paste them into the thread ctrl + v.
I warn you the scan will take a long time to run and will not fix anything just identifies bad files.
I LOVE YOU!!! YOU ARE MY HERO!!! It worked. The desktop is back to normal. How come McAfee Virus Scan doesn't identify any of these viruses when I run rhat scan? I'm sending the scan but I have to split it up because the post is too long.
Here is the first part.
