When I start my computer, ie opens and http://63.218.226.78/connect.cgi?id=897 pops up and ask me to instal lsome stupid dialer. This blasted hijacker al keeps my task bar items from loading as well, or at least that has started at the same time as this. Adaware and spybot show my computer as clean, and my antivrius software Avast, shows it clean as well. I'm running windows XP home with a cable modem.

here is my log:

Thank you for any help can provide.
Hello dogolopee, Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

Next:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Ok, I followed all your directions. Spybot didn't find anything, nor did the online virus scan or cwshredder. Adaware found 1 registry entry and delted it.

The Problem is still there. On start up, the taskbar doesn't appear, instead it is blue and then an ie window appears and tries to connect to the site and promts to download a dialer. Also my anitvirus icon and other system tray icons do not show up when this item appears. It doesn't always do it, but the following hijackthis log is from the first reboot after running adaware and the ie window poped up. My computer does seem to be running a bit slower than normal thanks to this.

It appears this is starting before any programs set to launch at start up. Right now there is nothing in my starup folder in the start menu.

It also adds http://63.218.226.78 to the trusted sites within ie. It also isn't an ie only thing. Once I tried changing my default browser to firefox to see what would happen, and when I did that, firefox poped up to the bad page instead of ie. So at least I know it isn't an IE specific problem.

When the microsoft beta spyware thing actually loads (i.e. for some reason the hijacker doesn't pop up on start up) it will block something trying to access ie.

Also when ie is running it will occasionally go to the bad site instead of the page I type in or link followed.

I'm not sure how i got this, as I normally only use IE when I go to the windows update page. Also right now the windows update page will not display anymore in ie since this thing started.

One day while waiting for the reply I got bored and looked through the registry. It seems to keep re-adding the bad ip to the registry at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Internet Settings
ZoneMap
Ranges
Range 1

Within the Range 1 thing is "default" type is "REG_SZ" and the data is "(value not set)"

and the other entry is "*" type is "REG_DWORD" and the data is "0x00000002 (2)"

the entrey with the ip is named ":Range" the type is "REG_SZ" and the data is "63.218.226.78"

The Hijack log right after running adaware and rebooting and ie popping up to the site on start up follows:

Thank you.
Disconnect from the internet.

Next, launch Notepad, and copy/paste all the blue REGEDIT below to it
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

Back on the Desktop, double-click on the fixme.reg file you just saved and click on Yes when asked to merge the information.
Ok, I made the fileand merged it with the registry, restarted the computer, and now it isn't popping up on start up, but when ie opens, it still goes to that page and the windows update page will not load.

Thank you.
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
When I rebooted I got a black screen then it said that windows didn't start up right and I had to choose between starting in safe mode or normal mode. I went ahead and chose normal mode.

Once the computer booted up it was running kinda slow. I then tried to run hijackthis, but the program wouldn't open. Other programs would open but only hijackthis wouldn't start. So I deleted it, turned back on the antispyware protection, turned back on the cable modem, and redownloaded and installed hijackthis.

I also opened ie a few times to see if it would go to that page, and it wouldn't. The site was also not listed under the trusted sites. I also did a quick search of the registry and there were no instances of the bad IP.

Here is the log from the redownloaded hijackthis:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
I hate windows.

I restarted the computer after turning off the system restore. THen as the computer rebooted, ie poped up to Http://63.218.226.78/connect.cgi?id=897 AGAIN :(

I also put on spyware guard and spyware blaster, but it looks like you have to pay for updates to spyblaster. I already had installed, ad-aware, spybot search & destroy,
avast anti-virus, microsoft anti-spyware beta thingy, and the windows firewall turned on. I also already had installed IESpyad just last week when doing general updates.

Ok, I disconnected from the internet and ran inf file. Things looked ok. I then I reconneced and avast said two of its files had been accessed and that it wasn't safe to run it anymore. Those files were ashMaiSv.exe and ashWebSv.exe. So i went ahead and uninstalled it, rebooted the computer (to complete the removal, and installed AVG antivirus. I scanned the computer with AVG.

It found:
Java/ByteVerify

It couldn't heal it in:
c:\documents and settings\owner\application data\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive.jar-5707424b-22414642.RB0:\beyond.class

and

c:\documents and settings\owner\application data\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive.jar-119b4c66-56c76a37.RB0:\beyond.class

When I clicked to check that IE was working (well as close to working as ie gets), it opened to that evil site again, so I did a search of the registry and the pesky site is back again in Range 1.

Now, the taskbar doesn't turn blue anymore at start up, and microsoft antispyware will load (AVG and SG won't), but IE still pops up ot the page.

Edit:
I decided to just remove all of java from my computer and reinstall java from scratch sine there is a newer version than what i have. I hope by removing all the java stuff and putting on a new one it will remove the last traces of that virus.

Edit 2:
The virus is gone, but ie still pops up.

Something is stopping our fix.

Disable SpywareGuard:

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, file, exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.

Ok, i did what you said, and it looked like the problem was solved. I then restarted the computer, and did a virus scan. It showed no viruses, but "cleaned" one of the windows files one of the something.exe ones. Then SG crashed and wouldn't open. I rebooted the computer, and keept getting the balc kscreen saying windows couldn't load propperly. So I tried selecting to boot using last know good config, when the little blue bar first got half way across on the windows loading page, the computer reset back to the bad load page. I then tried, normal mode, safe mode, safe mode w/networking, safe mode with comand prompt, and they all did the same thing. I unplugged the computer from everything, let it sit a few minutes and tried again, the same thing. I put in a boot floppy disk, but then it was showing my f drive as my c drive and I couldn't nav my way to the other drive no matter what. So I put in my os disk that came with my computer and booted from it and opened the reapir consol, but then after choosing to repair c:\windows and typing in the admin password I have no idea what to do. But at least it looks like cd is recognizing the drive with windows on it. My computer is a gateway, I have a red driver disc and a blue os disk and two yellow application discs. I'm writing this from my ibook. I love my ibook. I would prefer not to have to reformat the HD. From the way the computer is acting now and the way the pop-up was appearing I kinda wonder if one of the main windows components wasn't actually infected and reloading the info on startup everytime. then when the info couldn't be loaded it simply refuses to let the OS load. Then again it could be evil magic monkies that live inside there for all I know. PC's make my brain hurt.
