My homepage has recently been hijacked by here4search.com. It first appears as http://letgohome.com/hp.htm?id=632 and then quickly switches to here4search.com. Changing it in the Internet Options has not worked. I have installed and run the following: Ad-Aware, CWShredder, SpySubtract, and Panda to no avail. I am not very computer literate so that is why I am here seeking your expertise. My HJT log is posted below. I would like to thank you in advance for any support you can offer me and look forward to a reply.

Thanks again,

Ericka

Hello eckogirl , welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Use ALT/CTRL/DEL and end the process for SpySub.exe.
It might interfer with the fix.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://letgohome.com/hp.htm?id=632

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {467FAEB2-5F5B-4c81-BAE0-2A4752CA7F4E} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\4DG4GV~1.DLL

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Control handler] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\6EBZHO6PJSWTHD.EXE

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [romahere3] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\0C9LI77XPF5J.EXE

O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

ALL 016's. They'll come back if needed,

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press the F8 key until the startup menu appears.

Choose the Safe Mode option then press Enter.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\6EBZHO6PJSWTHD.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\0C9LI77XPF5J.EXE

To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:
In Windows, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
First off, thanks so much for your speedy reply and help thus far. I tried to end SpySub.exe by using Alt/CTRL/DEL but it locked up my computer so I has to restart. I went ahead and just uninstalled it along with Security IGuard which I do not even recall installing in the first place.

My computer is acting a little slower now, but still functional. On my desktop now there is an off-center Fatal Error message. I can't fully read it because it is in the extreme right lower portion of the screen, but I can see the words "Fatal Error in IE has occured" and the number "00010E36". On a side note, any idea why this may be?

I deleted the items in the HJT as instructed and restarted in safe mode. I am not sure if I was actually in safe mode because the desktop looked the exact same upon startup. I went through the motions of F8 and selecting safe mode, and then it asked which OS I would like to start and I selected MS Windows and it brought me to my normal desktop with the exception that the fatal error was still there.

I searched for the system files and couldn't find either of them. I deleted all of the temp folder items except for "WebPoolFileFile" which the computer said was in use or restricted. I do not have a C:\Documents and Settings" folder so I couldn't accomplish that task.

My homepage is now reset to Microsoft.com and I hope this has been fixed but I will wait for your reply before I start celebrating.

Thanks again for all of your help. My log is posted below.

Ericka

One more thing, and I am not sure if you can help me with this or not. In an attempt to see if I could change my desktop display to get rid of the error message, I went into the display properties to change the desktop picture. The only tabs I have available now are "Screensaver", "Effects", and "Settings". Is there a fix for this as well? Thanks again for any help you can provide. Ericka

3. Select Restore Defaults

"copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Ok, the log is posted below. As far as the display settings, I still do not have a "Desktop" tab. All that is available is "Screensavers", "Effects", and "Settings". Besides that, the computer is running normal again. Any other possible fixes?

Thanks,

Ericka

When I right click on my desktop, a pop-up comes up and it is listed as follows: Active Desktop> - View as webpage (which is checked) - Customize my desktop (which brings me to the same incomplete display props) - Update Now Arrange Icons Line up icons Refresh New Properties (which also brings me to the same incomplete display properties window) I hope that makes sense to you. I wish I sould do a screen shot to show you exactly what I am seeing. I really want to thank you for all of the help you have given me so far. You have the patience of a saint. Ericka
Wow do I feel embarrased. There is a "Desktop Themes" icon. I clicked on that and chose a new theme which got rid of the error. Before this happened, I could have sworn that there were a few more tabs in the display properties window though, such as "Desktop" and "Web". Am I wrong there? In any case, thanks so much for all of your help, you have been a godsend. Ericka
Good Job

Log looks good :D

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
