Popup And Search Bar Problems

I've been getting a lot of popups lately that have gotten through my popup blocker, and I also have a searchbar at the bottom of the screen that covers my task bar. There is an "x" at the top right corner of it, showing that I should be able to delete it, which I used to be able to do but now it's not letting me anymore. Sometimes, too, I am redirected to another site when I am, say, intending on checking my email.

That, the search bar, and the popups have been pretty annoying to me lately, especially because of the fact that I use my computer for school. Is there anything anyone can help me with? I'd greatly appreciate it!

Hello Cynelyle , Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

We need to turn these off or it'll interfer with the fix.

Disable SpywareGuard:

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, file, exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.


Open Spybot S&D, click Mode>Advanced>Tools>Resident and remove the check from the Tea Timer box. You can reinstate it later but we don't want it interfering with what we need to do. Reboot when done.

After Reboot:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.


Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Sorry I didn't initially post the actual problems with my computer. I edited it before, but it was probably while you were replying (thanks for your quick reply!!). My task bar is covered by the search bar and so I can't turn off the spyguard. I'm going to restart my computer because that ends up taking off the search bar (it doesn't open up until I open an internet window). Then I'll proceed with the rest of your instructions.

Okay I did everything you said (and even did all three of the online scans). Panda didn't get any of 18 infected files, do you want me to post which files they were too?

The searchbar still came up when I opened an internet window and currently is still covering my task bar (such a pain in the bum!), and popups are still coming through despite my popup blocker. By the way, the searchbar (part of the URL in the properties of it is "mysearchnow.com/passthrough/newpass2.html") does not go away when I close out of my internet windows.

Yes, if they weren't fixed.

You HJT is one updated behind, soory I missed that on your first post.

You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Open Misc Tools> Pull the side bar down> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature and remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.

Also please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

Looks like you could have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

Messenger plus is full of spyware and adware if you installed it and did not choose the option not to load advertising support.


1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila one nasty infection is gone.

You can re-install Messenger plus later, just remember to install without
advertising support.

Hmmm… I've already gone into my add/remove programs, tried that a couple of days ago. When I clicked to remove, it gave me a choice to remove both MSN Plus and the sponsor programs, or to just remove the sponsor. I clicked the latter and restarted the computer and the problems have not gone away. I do know that this had to have been caused by the sponsor programs because it hadn't done it until then. I was so mad at myself for having accepted for them to be installed; silly me thought it was a "terms of service" list. *rolls eyes* I'll be reading those things better next time. So is there anything I should do since I've already deleted the sponsor?

You have a Lop.com infection. To remove it follow the instructions below.

For Windows 2000/XP users
Click Start Select Control Panel
double click Add/Remove Programs
look for any of the following, and uninstall them:
Window Search
Window Searching
Lop.com
LOP SEARCH
Browser Enhancer
Ultimate Browser Enhancer
IMPORTANT!!!

You may find entries similair to the above but with Weird spacing in the names.
They are Lop.com, uninstall them.

If it is not listed in Add/Remove Programs, or if the uninstall does not
seem to work go here:
http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe
download and run this uninstaller. Reboot when done.

Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

I looked through my programs and didn't see any of the programs you listed, and so I tried to download the program from that link you posted. The only thing is, it said becasue of my security settings, I was unable to download it. Is there an alternative? I'm not sure if I'll be able to change the settings because my computer is plugged into the network at my school, which has its own firewall, so I don't know if I can change it to download the program.

Another thing, I just went into my program files because I found one of the file names from the pandasoft run, and deleted the folder that LOP was in….. let me know if there's anything else, or if I did something wrong by manually deleting it just now. (Edit: It was called C2Media)

Disable SpywareGuard: Until you reboot. It could conflict with the fix.

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, file, exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.



If you reconize any of these and want to keep them, don't fix them

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Use Add/Remove Programs and remove:
Viewpoint Manager



Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.


Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.



Search for and delete these folders if listed:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint




Search for and delete these files if listed:

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.


Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
