Ok, I keep getting this pop up now and I am not sure where it came from.

It says:

Windows File Protection
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been
replace by unreconized versions. To maintain system stability,
Windows must restore the original versions of these files.

Insert your Windows 2000 Professional CD now.

Retry | More Information | Cancel

I am running Windows 2000 Professional, as the pop tells. I ran a hijackthis log, just in case as well, here are the results.

Hello 2399Skillz, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. Complements of the nice folks at MessengerPlus :rant2: , you have LOP toolbar. This item has nothing to do with MSNIM or Microsoft. It must be removed carefully, follow the instructions I will post in a code box for you.

I also wish to tell you your HJT is outdated. You can update from within the software like this: Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Scroll to Check for update online > Follow instructions. If you have any problems with this, here are download links: http://www.malwareremoval.com/downloads.html

Here are the instruction for removing LOP, thanks to Elrond for this.

You have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila one nasty infection is gone.

Once you have updated HJT and removed the LOP toolbar along with MessengerPlus, please post a new log using version1.99.1 and we will clean up the rest.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks very much for the reply. As for the MSG Plus thing, I removed that a long time ago with help from someone who took a look at my HJT log. However, that one "entry" still shows up no matter how many times I delete it. I'm not sure that it still shows up on IE, for I never use IE anymore. Strickly FX, and if the site requires IE, then I move along. I will, however, update the HJT log and post it. I also think I should mentiont that the popup I keep getting about "Windows File Protection" is now gone, and I think I know what was causing it. Possibly. I put a harddrive with Windows 98 installed on it on my computer to back it up, before I reformatted the drive. Well, the "Windows" directoy was on my computer from that harddrive, once I deleted/removed it. I rebooted and that annoying pop up has, as of now, not returned. Thankfully. Once I get HJT updated, I will be back. Again, thanks for your help; Zelda kicks ass too.
As I had thought, Messanger Plus is not in my remove/add programs.

Here is the new HJT log. Thanks again.

I just got done fighting with that item for several days where the MessengerPlus was not removed correctly. The removal procedure must be followed exactly. You still show the item in your log: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart In the case I just completed the member removed MessengerPlus because he quessed that LOP came with it and thought that would get rid of it. I had to have him download MessengerPlus exactly as he had before and then follow the correct proceedure to uninstall it as in the Code box. I can not guarantee success with HJT until this item is properly removed. Thanks…pskelley

Do you have any evidence of the LOP toolbar on your computer?

156603

Not that I am aware of. I think I remember the tool bar, and how annoying it used to be when I used IE, but I don't see anything of the like. I even just opened IE for the first time in months, and no extra tool bars there either.

I will give it a try, it will take a few minutes for me to set it up, we will see what happens.  pskelley

Ok, thanks.
1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

2) TeaTimer will stop the fix, follow the instructions in this link to turn it off:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

3) Open Hijack this and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.vdwuuuwkgdmes.com/ZWeLUt4mPtXD2…ekTP0DjD9_X.jsp
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart
(if you did not set these restrictions you may remove them)
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

I wish to point this out, if the 04 line refering to MessengerPlus is just a line in the log, it will go easily. If that item is still installed and you can look to see what is in the file: C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3 then this uninstallation was not done correctly and I have doubt the fix will work.

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE
When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instruction:
pskelly, thanks alot. I think everything is cleaned.

I did exactly as you had said and everything seems to be gone after I rebooted. Also, that Messenger Plus thing, that directory didn't even exist. I will let this run for a day or two, then I'm going to run HJT again just to make sure.

Thanks again bro. You rock.

Dang, I spoke too soon. All I did was went back and enabled my Spybot Search and Destroy in the registry again, using Spybot Search and Destroy. Then I rebooted, and they are back.

Yeah, how do I know these things. I remove a lot of LOP. You can give it a try in safe mode if you wish:

When you downloaded MessengerPlus, and I have never downloaded it, you have an option, the EULA I think…to download with or without the sponsor programs. When you do not opt out on the sponsor program, guess what. These are some really nice folks, huh? I have a gut feeling you need to go to the beginning. Download the MessengerPlus exactly as you did before then follow Elronds canned fix exactly. I can give you websites that offer instructions by editing the registry. If you use that method, be sure to back up the registry first and be careful. Here are some sites:

I would not buy anything were I you as I understand they do not work either. On a lighter note, here is a link to the valid, new MSNIM:

Good luck…pskelley
Thanks, and as far as I know I am no longer using Messanger Plus. This is the regular MSN version 6.2, though I did notice something on the last time I did reboot. Windows gave an installilation popup, saying "Installing Devices" or something, then the name switched to MSN 6.2, then after a few minutes it dissapeared just as quietly as it appeared. Either way, I will go and re download that stuid program and follow the uninstall instructions again. Thanks alot.
