Hi randyman, and welcome to TomCoyote!

I'm 'KotaGuy, and I will be helping you with your HijackThis log.

You may want to print my instructions out for reference during the fix.

The version of HijackThis you are using is out of date. Please uninstall/delete the old version and download the newest version from here. Extract(unzip) it to its own folder.

Download CWShredder. Save it to its own folder. Run the program, update it. Press the Fix button.

Download FxIstBar. Run the tool.

Please do scans at Panda ActiveScan, TrendMicro HouseCall, or eTrust AntiVirus WebScanner. Also do an online Trojan scan from Windows Security. Let them fix anything they find, rebooting your computer between each scan.

Next, download and install Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. Visit this page for proper configuration. Run and scan with both, letting them fix whatever they find. Remember to reboot between each scan.

Once that is done, run and scan with HijackThis and post a new log please.
Hi KotaGuy, and thanks so much for your assistance.

Holy stuff! I assume the things you directed me to are free. I also really hope they can realistically be performed with a dial-up modem, the only 'net connection available where this machine is. It could take up to a week for me to get to this as it's not my machine and I need to schedule a visit to the family where it is. Hang tight and I'll post a new log as soon as I've done all the below!

Hi randyman. Yes, everything I have directed you to and will direct you to is free. As far as the Dial-Up issue goes, the only things I can see taking a while might be the online scans. Do one of the scans(either from TrendMicro or Panda) and that should be good enough for now. Please download/install/use the rest of the tools I advised to though as they are needed. When you get around to it, post back with the new log. I will warn you though, you might want to prepare yourself to be there for a bit. Getting the system totally clean will most likely take a few cracks at it.
Hi Kotaguy, my Guru and Savior!

Whew, that was a long road to get back where I started from (on a slow machine with a 28.8 modem!). Anyway, I did the things you asked (only ran TrendMicro, not Panda or eTrust or Windows Security). Here is the result for your consideration and guidance.

============================
Thanks for posting the new log.

I noticed you have both Norton and AVG running. This is not advisable as it may cause conflicts and can slow performance of the computer. Disable one of the active monitors you have running. You can keep both of them installed, use one as a backup if you want. But don't have both of them actively monitoring the computer at the same time.

Print this out for reference during the fix.

Sorry to do this to you… but I need you to download a few more small tools.

Please download Killbox. Extract(unzip) it to its own folder. Don't run it yet.

Also downloadSwap.zip. Extract(unzip) the files to their own folder. Don't run any of them yet.

Download CWShredder. Save it to its own folder. Run the program, update it. Press the Fix button. Exit when done.

Make sure no files will be hidden. To do this:

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task Manager. End Task:

w?crtupd.exe
eetu.exe

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

You can fix the rest of the 016's if you wish as they will reinstall if/when needed.

Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Search for and delete these files if found:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?crtupd.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\eetu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
winlogin.exe

NOTE!! When searching for w?crtupd.exe, you may get multiple entries returned. If you are unsure about which to delete, right click on each of them, choose Properties. Check the Vendor info, if it is from Microsoft, do not delete it.

Browse to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all files in the folder, do not delete the folder itself. Emtpy the Recycle Bin. Click Start>Run, type in cleanmgr, hit Enter. Let it scan the C: drive. Make sure the first three boxes are checked. Press OK.

Reboot Windows normally.

Browse to the folder where you extracted the files from Swap.zip. Double click on swap.bat. Let it run. It will restart your computer, so don't be alarmed about that. It also creates a file… C:\log.txt

Once your computer has rebooted, please post a new HiJackThis log along with copying/pasting the contents of C:\log.txt into

your reply.
Kotaguy,

Here Done with your last set of instructions. Below is the latest HijackThis log, followed by the Swap log file.

Awaiting further instructions from the Oracle…

Thanks for posting the new logs.

Just found the one file… this is good… and the 020 line is gone from your log as well. :)

OK!

Disconnect from the internet… unplug the cable to your modem if need be.

Close all open windows and programs, then start Killbox. Put a check next to "Delete on Reboot", then copy this line in "Full Path of File to Delete" box:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ypfzk03.dll

Click the red and white "Delete File" button.
Click "Yes" at the first prompt .
Click "Yes" at the second.

Exit Killbox. Reboot Windows normally and post a new HijackThis log along with another Swap log please.

Thanks!
Here's the latest, at your request. Is Kotaguy short for Lakota Guy?

No… not Lakota… Dakota…. Dodge Dakotas are all I've ever owned.

Hence 'KotaGuy :D

As for the logs….

Good Work!! Log is CLEAN!!

How is the computer behaving? Any of the previous symptoms?
Kotaguy, you're fantastic. Thank you so much. Small donation made to TomCoyote via PayPay. Keep up the great work, it's a fabulous service you're providing! After all this carp** helping out my friend, I thank *God* I'm a Mac user!
Oh yeah, didn't answer your question! No problems noted. Machine seems faster and some generic icons have returned to normal. Thanks so much.
Good to hear! Glad I was able to help :D

Some suggestions…

Do scans with Ad-Aware and Spybot… let them clean anything they find. Scan with your AV program as well. Make sure to update them before scanning and reboot between each scan. This should clean up anything we couldn't get at with HijackThis.

Now that it is clean, you should reset the System Restore point. This will ensure a nice clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

Along with Ad-Aware and Spybot, you might also want to look into installing SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD. You can grab them from the links in my sig. The programs are free and can be updated, so please remember to do so. Installing these will go a long way in preventing reinfection.

Check out the links in my sig named How'd I get Infected and Understanding Spyware as well, some good information for you :)

If there is no Firewall installed, I'm sure you've heard of ZoneAlarm.

Might want to think about updating to Service Pack 2 as well. It closes a lot of security holes in Windows.

Other than that, remember to update Windows frequently, update your protection programs, scan often and…

Surf Safe!
