Hi I have been getting lots of popups lately. I run Norton Antivirus and Ad Aware plus. Ad aware seems to remove them but they just pop back up again in a minute or so. Norton detects several threats but cannot remove them. Can you take a look at my log and give me any pointers? It would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi bamboosel9, and welcome to Tomcoyote!

I'm 'KotaGuy, and I will be helping you with your HijackThis log.

You may want to print my instructions out for reference during the fix.

Download and install CleanUp!. Don't run it yet.

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:

1. Open AdAware SE.
2. Go to AdWatch User Interface.
3. Go to Tools and Preferences.
4. At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
5. Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
6. Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
7. Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.

Please make sure no files are hidden. To do this:

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task Manager. End Task the following:

GameChannel.exe
ViewMgr.exe
MediaAccK.exe
MediaAccess.exe
dikr.exe

Go to Add/Remove Programs. Uninstall the following if there:

WildTangent or WT GameChannel
Viewpoint Manager
Preview AdService
AutoUpdate

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

You can, if you wish, fix the rest of the 016 entires as they will reinstall, if needed, the next time you visit the websites.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Search for and delete the folders:

C:\Program Files\WildTangent
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\Preview AdService
C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate
C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT

Search for and delete these files:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\dikr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\psbser.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE
lz3ro.exe

Browse to your C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch folder. Delete all files in the folder, do not delete the folder itself. Empty your

Recycle Bin. Run CleanUp!

Boot Windows normally and post a new HijackThis log please.
Hi,
Thanks so much for your help. I'm having a problem downloading the clean up program. I keep getting an error message. I did everything else you said as well as deleted my temp internet files before restarting, but everything came back again after restart in normal mode. Is this because I am not running clean up?

I'll put up both logs… after fix before restart (first) and one I did after restart

Thanks again

Thanks for posting the new log. Not everything has come back… some yes, but that isn't uncommon though. It might take a few cracks at it to get everything killed.

Don't worry about the CleanUp! program… instead, download CCleaner.

As before… disable Ad-Watch as it will interfere with the fix. Don't just disable it from the System Tray, disable it from inside the program itself as I described in my earlier post. If you don't it will interfere with the fix and everything will keep coming back.

Bring up the Task Manager. End Task:

rkpizv.exe

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

Boot to Safe Mode. Search for and delete these folders if found:

C:\Program Files\WildTangent
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager
C:\Program Files\Preview AdService
C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate

Search for and delete these files if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rkpizv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\psbser.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE
lz3ro.exe
lfwlt1.exe

You can run CCleanup now. Empty your Recycle Bin, etc.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new HijackThis log.
Hi, here is my new log. When I was searching for files and folders, the only one I found was WildTangent. All of the others did not show up. But when I ran CCleaner, the rkpizv.exe was listed as a program, so I deleted it. Thanks so much again for your help.

Thanks for posting the new log.

Some things not showing up when searching for them may be caused by it being deleted by HJT or another cleaning program or you haven't set Windows to show hidden files. I have to give instructions for what I see in the log.

Print this out for reference during the fix.

Please disable AdWatch, as it will hinder the removal of some entries causing them to come back. You can re-enable it after you're clean. Don't just right click on the System Tray icon as this will not work, disable it from inside the program.

End Task the following:

dikr.exe

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

Thanks again. Here is my new log. This one looks better than the last (I think) but I didn't do anything differently. What can I do to keep them from coming back? Thanks for posting the new log.

Good Work!! Your log is CLEAN!!

To clean up any remnants that may have been left behind, I suggest doing a couple online virus scans. A couple good ones are Panda ActiveScan and TrendMicro HouseCall. Let them fix anything they find. Reboot between each scan.

Along with Ad-Aware, I suggest downloading and installing Spybot S&D;. Visit this page for proper configuration of both programs. Run and scan with both, letting them fix whatever they find. Remember to reboot between each scan.

After that reset your System Restore Point. This will ensure a nice clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

Along with Ad-Aware and Spybot, you might also want to look into installing SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD. You can grab them from the links in my sig. The programs are free and can be updated, so please remember to do so. Installing these will go a long way in preventing reinfection.

Check out the links in my sig named How'd I get Infected and Understanding Spyware as well, some good information for you :)

Other than that, remember to update Windows frequently, update your protection programs, scan often and…
