Need Help With The Last Remnants

9 min read

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

Been cleaning a friend's machine and have gotten rid of most of the junk. It previously had CWS (oh for the days when that only meant College World Series!) and a ton of other garbage. I'd like to ask if someone could please review the below HijackThis log and provide any help or recommendations. In particular I'm still seeing the Elite toolbar and a few search "helpers" that won't go away. Spybot S&D also still reports 6 ietms under CWS.Leftovers, but CWShredder and AdAware report nothing CWS related. There are also several listings in the msconfig startup info with filenames that appear to be random letters, although I don't find the actual files. Some of this may be harmless leftover remnants, but I'd like to get rid of all traces of these nasties. I've generated a HijackThis startup log and can provide it on request. Thanks for any assistance.

Hi fleadhfan and welcome to the Tom Coyote Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will he helping you.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Go to the Tom Coyote Forums http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?
.Click on My Controls near the top middle of the window (make sure you have signed in first)
.On the left hand column, click "view topics"
.If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at that place in control panel, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification", By doing this, you will be notified as soon as I have posted a reply to your log.

3. I want you to download CWShredder (the stand alone version is free).
Run the program and click Check for Update. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of CWShredder and choose FIX. Here is the link:
CWS Shredder

REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM

4. Download the "Elite Toolbar" removal tool from HERE

Please note that this tool must be run in SAFE MODE

. How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

. After the program has completed its work, REBOOT your system if it doesn't ask you to.

4. Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed excepr for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren
Thanks Trevuren. I ran CWShredder again, and as reported in the first post it found nothing. Rebooted into safe mode and ran the Elite cleaner. Rebooted, ran HJT; below is the resulting log.

Hi pageone,

You ran CWShredder again but you didn't put HJT in its own folder and not in a temp folder.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.media-search.net/nph-search….k=sbar1_srchbtn

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file and DELETE it (if it is present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmc.exe

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren
Actually, unless I misunderstand, HJT is in its own folder. TempApps is a folder of my own creation that I use for downloaded installation files, and I made a separate subfolder for HJT and put it in there. Is that sufficient, or should HJT be in a folder directly off the root? Will post the new log file momentarily. Bob
Went ahead and moved HJT to a root folder anyway, did all the rest as recommended. Looks a little better, but the media-search.net stuff and one bho didn't go away. Here's the log.

Hi fleadhfan,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
. Click the Config button located in the lower right hand corner of the HijackThis window.
. When the new screen opens, find and click the Miscellaneous Tools button.
. Then choose the Open Process Manager button.
. From the list of processes, hilight the following items by clicking them, ONE AT A TIME, then DELETE them by clicking the KILL button:

C:\Program Files\msnet\v9\msnet.EXE

Once all items have been KILLED, click the Back button which will return you to the HijackThis main window. Now place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.media-search.net/nph-search….k=sbar1_srchbtn
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://search.media-search.net/nph-search….ok=stmpl1&find=

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folder and DELETE it with all its content (if they are present):

C:\Program Files\msnet

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Trevuren
Hi Trevuren,

After a busy Sunday, I finally got back to this. Performed your last set of steps, and I think we're there! I still wonder though about the remaining entry
"08 - Extra context menu item: Coupons …couponsandoffers_script0.htm"
Seems like that should be gotten rid of too, but I'll wait for your opinion on that. I don't find that file in the specified location or anywhere else. Also the two 09 entries that indicate "file missing"; should the registry keys be deleted? Log is below.

Hi fleadhfan,

I have added some deletions to the list. You can't go by what HJT says about (Missing file) in 09's. There is a glitch in the program

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &AOL Toolbar search - res://C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML
O8 - Extra context menu item: Coupons - file://C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers\System\Temp\couponsandoffers_script0.htm
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {40289096-9F72-4A04-BCB3-E434ECDCEE33} (AppDLCtrl Class) - http://download.howudodat.com/chatterbox/download/appdl.cab

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll< C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers<
Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren
Ok Trevuren, I got rid of the last few unwanted entries. Neither of the files/folders specified were present on the system. Here's the latest log, and I think we've now gotten it all. Thanks very much for your time and assistance.

All the best,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)
