My internet explorer icon on my desktop was for some reason changed to "free" rather than "internet explorer" a while back. I have deleted the icon a number of times but it keeps popping up again. It shows up when I use Explorer and enter Desktop - I delete it an it just reappears. It does not seems to affect my system negatively that I am aware, but I am wondering if it signifies a deeper problem and how to get rid of it. Any advice would be appreciated.
Here is my hijack log by the way:

Hello james25 ,welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

Download, unzip and run this IE Icon fix.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/ie_desktop_icon.zip

Next:

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I have done everything you have instructed. The new log file is below. Also, my system seems to be functioning fine - just that icon remains (it is on desktop under when I use explore, but I have deleted from my actual desktop, although sometimes i think it reappears). Thanks for all your help.

To use it:
  • Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and install.
  • Open CCleaner.
  • Place a check by everything in the Applications tab.
  • Place a check by Internet Explorer, Windows explorer, and System in the Windows tab.
  • Hit the button that says Run CCleaner
  • Reboot to remove index.dat files.

Let me know if this takes care of it.
I did as you instructed. The "free" icon is now of course gone from recent documents, yet remains under Desktop when I view with Explore. Thanks for all the help. Any other recommendations?
Lets look at what's in the startup. click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key. look in the Startup. List everything there and point out which ones have a check next to it.
The following are what are listed. Each as a check by it. SysTray SysTray.Exe HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer… UpdaterUI "C:\ProgramFiles\Net… HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer… SHSTAT "C:\ProgramFiles\Net… HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer… ACUMon "C:\ProgramFiles\Net… HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer… Microsoft Works Ca… C:\PROGRA~1\COMM… Common Startup Adobe Reader Spe… C:\PROGRA~1\Adobe… Common Startup
I don't see any problems there.

The "free" icon is now of course gone from recent documents, yet remains under Desktop when I view with Explore.

Try this:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
3. If it's listed there, click on it and Select Restore Defaults
It it not listed under customize desktop, so I could not restore defaults for it. However, I restored the icon the the desktop (because I had previously deleted it) and renamed it Internet Explorer. I restarted and it does not change. Maybe something changed the name and there is really nothing else wrong? Thanks for the help. Let me know if there is anything else further I should do.
Good Job

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
