Hello Davey and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

The infection you have will morph after rebooting the computer so I'll need to see an updated log. But first…..

Move HijackThis to Permanent Folder:
HijackThis needs to be unzipped into a permanent folder in order to save backups just in case something goes wrong.
  • Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:.
  • Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT.
  • Extract HijackThis from the zipped file into this new folder.
Post a fresh HijackThis log as a reply to this thread. I'll receive an email notification of your reply and will respond with a fix as soon as possible.
Alan,
Here is the 2nd log.

The instructions for step 1 in the top section may not be exact as I do not have this program on my computer. It is exactly like Microsoft Antispyware so I enclosed the instructions for it and changed the name.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Disable CounterSpy Real-time Protection:
    • Open CounterSpy.
    • Click on Tools, Settings.
    • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
    • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the CounterSpy Client Security Agents on startup (recommended).
    • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
    • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close CounterSpy.
    • Right click on the CounterSpy icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown CounterSpy.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:

Sorry to ask this question , but where can I get cwsserviceremove. I can find it on internet for freedownloads but always have to join a forum. I though tit would be here somewhere. Dave
Click on the link below to download the zip file.

cwsserviceremove.zip

Note : All of the underlined words in the fix above are links to the programs. Just click on the underlined word and it will allow you to download the program.
Alan,
Some notes of interest:
1) After running Hijackthis in step 4 from Safe mode, which was after CWShredder and About Buster, the scan was not the same. This will be the 1st log in the reply. I checked the items that did match up with what you had told me to check and ran the fix.
2) CWS Shredder came back with nothing found.
3) Trend Micro came back clean at the end.
4) Ran a hijackthis scan at the end , this is the 2nd log.
5) When booted everything back up engaged my Counterspy program and ran it and came back with a CWS item and another find, but it allowed me to clean them. I went with Counterspy on the reccomendation of PCWorld April 2005 edition.
6) I had run my Norton scan prior to this and had ADware threats that would not allow to be deleted. Now it deleted all but 1 item.
7) I ran a hijackthis scan before this , and this is the 3rd log.
8) About Buster log is last.

All in all my computer is much better- The about blank issue is gone, irratating pop ups and messages gone, errors and task messages on boot up and shut down gone.
Thanks for all your help. if you see anything else I should do please let me know.

Dave

Your final two HijackThis logs are clean.

Please run AboutBuster again and post the new log that it creates.

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

Thanks again, Dave
Log is clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
