Hello RobYoungert and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
    • Click Start. Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
    • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
  • Disable the offending service.
    • Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
    • Scroll down and find the service called : Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper << There are two similar named services, be sure to fix the correct one.
    • When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.

Pages Reset… Done! – Scan 2 ————————— About:Buster Version 4.0 Reference List : 19 No ADS found on system Attempted Clean Of Temp folder. Pages Reset… Done! Here's a current situation report: Your instructions were clear and easy to use. Each step was OK to follow. Steps 1 to 5 beginning were good. Safe mode steps 1 to 3 were good. Step 4 - Fix with HJT - some interesting results: R1s none visible O2 was different to the return from you. Could have been the NAVirus done prior to this activity. O4s Run [ sdkcz32 ]was on the list but the other three were not visible despite setting visibility for all files. d3gl32.dll was spotted by NAVirus. O23 not visible. Step 5. C:\Windows etc\ jmhay.dll deleted C:\Windows etc\ mfcyf32.dll not seen C:\Windows etc\ sdkcz32.exe deleted The remaining four were not found despite a search through directories. Steps 6 and 7 OK Step 8 Trendmicro Housecall did not work as it picked up message "IE encountered a problem" etc "Send / don't send report?" ended up in the screen clearing and returning to the "About:blank" Browser screen. Norton Antivirus identified 147 new threats which were adware or trojan Of these 138 were quarantined and 9 files cause and "At Risk Still" status. WARM RESTART from Desktop icon for IE was slow and on three occasions new trojans were indicated by NAVirus. Advertising pop ups also appeared. COLD RESTART produced two messages on the screen asking for files. C:\Windows\ cruo32.exe and C:\Windows\ System32 winen.exe A Spywareguard message said "Attempt to change Internet Explorer settings has been detected" asks "reset old value?" On clicking yes to this the message is repeated. The warning message says that the screen has been changed from Nil to About:blank. Next a NAVirus maessage indicates the presence of yet more trojans. This process repeats like groundhog day but the trojans are always new and, according to the pop up cannot be repaired. The nine files causing an "At Risk" situation are: crpb32.exe jmhay.dll kujrehry.exe leulp.dll msmu32.exe pojkp.dll sdkcz32.exe xynfg.dll zbkhx.dll Some can be recognised from the HJT log Thanks for the help so far. Things are faster but the IEx screen is really a bug as if a search is being made needing a close down via the "X" box the search gets returned to the IE browser - About:blank - (to start all over again). Ihope this helps you to help me Cheers Bob Young (Robyoungert)
You did not update AboutBuster before using it. :(

I need you to uninstall SpywareGuard until after the computer is clean. It will try to stop registry changes that we need to change.

  • Move HijackThis to Permanent Folder:
HijackThis needs to be placed into a permanent folder as it creates backups of everything fixed and you won't want these on your desktop.
    • Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:.
    • Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT.
    • Move HijackThis from the desktop into this new folder.

  • Fix with Hijackthis:
    • Open Hijackthis, Run a scan and check the following:

      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D52D3F17-387E-D195-61D1-ED8EB93A56D9} - C:\WINDOWS\winqb32.dll

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sdkcz32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkcz32.exe

      O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sony-europe.com
      O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sonystyle-europe.com
      O15 - Trusted Zone: *.vaio-link.com
    • With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.
  • Delete the following files:C:\WINDOWS\system32\winqb32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkcz32.exe
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free online Antivirus scan:
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log.
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.

Current Situation.

Latest instructions followed re: AB update, uninstalling SpywareGuard and moving Hijackthis off the Desktop. Steps 1 & 2 completed.

Boot to Safe Mode.
Step 1 Coolwebsearch not found
Step 2 AboutBuster log made.

Step 3 Hijackthis
O2 BHO(no name) checked
O4 \ \sdkcz32.exe checked
O15s all checked

Step 4 Delete files
C:\Windows\System32\winqb32.dll not found
C:\Windows\System32\sdkcz32.exe not found

Step 5
Temporary files removed

Step 6 Restart
Much quicker
Still asking for two files: I am suspicious about these :-
C:\Windows\System32\javavv32.exe
C:\Windows\sdkvf32.exe

Trojan virus warning flag was expected next and duly arrived as before. Three clicks to remove the flag.

Going for Internet Explorer.
Default page Google came up and stayed - good news. Spyware pop ups arrived. Last thing however, About : blank returned and more trojan warnings.

I used two Virus checkers:
RAV which found six suspicious files

C:\WINDOWS\KB826984.log->ADS:vyuuob - TrojanDownloader:Win32/WinShow.AK -> Suspicious
C:\WINDOWS\setuplog.txt->ADS:tzysmf - TrojanDownloader:Win32/WinShow.AK -> Suspicious
C:\WINDOWS\VAIO SLIT Pattern Wallpaper TrueColor 1280x768.bmp->ADS:xlwjly - TrojanDownloader:Win32/WinShow.AK -> Suspicious
C:\WINDOWS\_delis43.ini->ADS:xkmvid - TrojanDownloader:Win32/WinShow.AK -> Suspicious
C:\WINDOWS\_delis43.ini->ADS:sbwuja - TrojanDownloader:Win32/WinShow.AK -> Suspicious
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tqlbg.dll - TrojanDownloader:Win32/WinShow.AK -> Suspicious

Bitdefender which found the following:
20 infected files
Virus detected
Trojan.Dropper.Small.TN 5
Trojan.Downloader.Agent.BQ 8
Trojan.Agent B1 1
Trojan.Startpage.563 4
Java.Trojan.ClassLoader.Z 2

Note:
I did have trouble with Pandasoftware as it gave up part way through. I'm not
sure why. This held me up for a lot of time and I,m thinking maybe this gave the trojans a chance to get going again as I can see the R1s are full once more.

Bye for now

Bob Young (Robyoungert)
You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

After the fix is done and the new log is posted, do not reboot the computer. If the infection is still present, it will change the file names once again.

  • Fix with Hijackthis:
    • Open Hijackthis, Run a scan and check the following:

      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\tqlbg.dll/sp.html#28129
      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\tqlbg.dll/sp.html#28129
      R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
      R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\tqlbg.dll/sp.html#28129
      R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\tqlbg.dll/sp.html#28129

      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\tqlbg.dll/sp.html#28129
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\tqlbg.dll/sp.html#28129
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

      O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [mfchg32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\mfchg32.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [iebf.exe] C:\WINDOWS\iebf.exe
    • With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.
  • Delete the following files:C:\WINDOWS\system32\tqlbg.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\netra32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\mfchg32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\iebf.exe
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log.
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Hi, I,m not too happy. Objectivity is best.
I ran through your instructions for a second time today as I'd lost time with trying to use Trendmicro Housecall which, for some reason doesn't like being installed. :rant2:
I did, however go through the files with Bitdefender which found many suspicious files.

Of those identified by Bitdefender, the following were not deleted:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlzs.exe is infected with Trojan. Downloader.Agent.BQ
disinfection, update and deletion failed.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nttp.dll is infected with Trojan. Dropper.Small.TN
disinfection and deletion failed.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winjq.exe is infected with Trojan. Downloader.Agent.BQ
disinfection and deletion failed.

Step 6 has caused concern as I cannot get this stuff to you unless I remember to click on network on the safe mode boot up. Is this correct? One thing is certain that I'm seeing the suspicious files, (I think), and see if my mental list is correct when you respond.
Nevertheless, on with the job.

HijackThis log: This was done this morning when I felt too much time had been wasted waiting for Virus checkers to get going. Before doing a fresh run I used Bitdefender twice to sort some files out. The second HJT log follows.

Thanks for the help. I feel swamped at times but hope we can get this right.
I am retired so have the time to work through with your direction.

Cheers

Bob Young (Robyoungert) :)
As you can see from your last two logs, the infection changes file names often. I recommend downloading and installing Firefox to use as your internet browser until your computer is fixed. Do not use Internet Explorer again until you are instructed to run the online scans.

You should still have all of the programs needed for the fix, so I will get started with the instructions for the fix only.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Fix with Hijackthis:
    • Open Hijackthis, Run a scan and check the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B7F35449-8C64-46FE-04C7-7E957F18AF3F} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nttp.dll

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atlzs.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlzs.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [winjq.exe] C:\WINDOWS\winjq.exe

      O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\sysji.exe (file missing)
    • With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.
  • Delete the following files:C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlzs.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\winjq.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\sysji.exe
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free Online Antivirus scan:
    • Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.
You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
      Bitdefender
      Pandasoftware
Trend Micro << Click Auto Clean
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
      McAfee
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.

Thanks for the help. I ran out of time with details for the report as they kept disappearing - I think the touch pad dragged me off the board and I couldn't get back.
Anyway more next time.

Thanks as always

Your new log is clean.:)

Download: DelDomains.inf
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

To use: Close all open browsers
Right-click DelDomains.inf and select: Install

Note: this will remove all entries in the Trusted Zone and Restricted Zone. You will need to immunize again with Spybot S&D, and re-install Ie-Spyad if you use these programs.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Well, Alan Unbounded thanks for sorting my problem out. I first started using computers way back in 1980 but never in my wildest dreams did I think they would come so far. BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN, AND PASCAL ruled! No one ever thought of messing things up as it took too long to plan and execute programs in the first place. Trojans and the like are not entirely new to me, but in the last week or so I have come to detest those morons who take great delight in causing others a lot of anxiety and distress by their personal greed and selfish behaviour. My admiration and delight for the efforts of those such as yourself who take on the "baddies" with relish is infinite and you are to be applauded long and loud for your efforts. If the answer to the question coming up is not in your remit - then OK; as I did notice that references to Windows SP2 have not been made. Currently this machine is running on SP1 but with a lot of other support which you have recommended. ? Will It actually need SP2? Thanks again for all the help - donation is certainly on its way Bob Young :D :wavey: (Robyoungert)
I would definitely recommend updating to SP2. It will add more security features to your computer including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

The donation is very much appreciated. :)
