Hello sweetrevenge and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Place HijackThis in permanent folder
    • HijackThis needs to be placed into a permanent folder as it creates backups of everything fixed and you won't want these on your desktop.
    • Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:.
    • Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT.
    • Move HijackThis from the desktop into this new folder.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.

  • Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
    • Click Start. Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
    • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
  • Disable the offending service.
    • Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
    • Scroll down and find the service called:Network Security Service
    • When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Yeah, I had problems.
Many of the files that you told me to delete were already gone
I wasn't able to delete C:\WINDOWS\mfcok.exe
When I tried to run Housecall, I kept getting kicked out of my internet browser… never was able to run Housecall
And when I tried to post a reply on this site, I was redirected when I pressed the "Add reply" button.

I don't know… it seems like I'm losing ground on this one. Nothing I've done so far seems to help. I'm still getting redirected, I'm still getting a rogue home page, I still have all of the unwanted favorites. This thing has a serious grip on my 'puter!

My homepage has been coming up about:blank, and while that loaded, there's a message on the bottom of the screen that says something about downloading from a site called www.mainsearchpage.com. Don't know if this is relevant, but…
Are you following the instructions exactly as listed? You still have not moved HijackThis to a folder of its own (Step 1).

Please download Firefox as an alternative to Internet Explorer. From this point on do not use Internet Explorer.

Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here.
One of the other helpers (thanks Nonsuch) here informed me that you have posted the same log in all three posts. I need to see an updated HijackThis log from you. Please delete any other logs you have stored on your computer.
D'oh!!!

I'll start over from the beginning with the instructions for you. Do not open Internet Explorer again until you are instructed to do the TrendMicro Housecall scan. The file names change each time Internet Explorer is opened and makes it much harder to fix. Follow the instructions exactly in order.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
    • Scroll down and find the service called : Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper << There are two similar named services. Make sure to fix the correct one.
    • When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Fix with Hijackthis:
    • Open Hijackthis, Run a scan and check the following:

Okay… for starters, please accept my apology for misleading you with faulty information. I normally don’t operate with my head in the clouds!!!
When I ran HiJackThis, none of the files that you told me to delete were present with the exception of the file starting with O4 and ending with sysou.exe. I deleted that file. Of the files that you told me to delete from the “Windows\system32” directory, only these two files were found: obgpr.dll & sysou.exe. mfcok.exe was not present in the “Windows” directory either.
When I tried to run Housecall, I had a window open that said that the directory containing my “Netscape” browser could not be found. So not wanting to screw anything up, I
aborted, not knowing whether FireFox fell under this heading. Other than that, things went as directed. As a side note, FireFox is working much better than MS Internet Explorer had been… no bookmarked porn, no pop-ups, etc.
Okay… here’s my HJT log; AboutBuster follows:

That log looks much better.
Just one line left to remove.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, and check the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6EEA3F5F-272E-64B0-0D54-07AC8C402BD1} - C:\WINDOWS\mfcxa32.dll

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\mfcxa32.dll

Reboot into SafeMode if you can not delete it in regular mode.

Step 3
Please run AboutBuster again as directed above to make sure nothing else is found.

Step 4
For the HouseCall scan, you will need to use Internet Explorer. Firefox will not work for this.

Step 5
Post the new HijackThis log and the AboutBuster logs as a reply to this thread.
All right… the sun has stopped shining, now it's back to the computer. Here's the HJT log that I just ran this afternoon:

Housecall found and removed several problems, and everything else seemed to go correctly per your instructions. When I did run Microsoft Internet Explorer, it did seem to be uncorrupted.

Thanks for your help!!!
Your new log is clean.:)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.
