Hello mikeromalis and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

MessengerPlus 3 - third party MSN Messenger extension that adds a number of useful features. It also bundles the hard to remove C2Media LOP adware. The software does offer you a choice during setup - make sure to install MessengerPlus WITHOUT that "sponsor program"!

This is the cause for some of your problems. It is optional but I strongly recommend that you go to Add/Remove Programs and remove Messenger Plus 3. After the computer is cleaned you can install it again without the sponsor program.


Download CWShredder.exe to your desktop from one of these places:

Double click on CWShredder.exe to clean up clicking FIX to have it remove all it finds. Reboot when completed.

You still have MessengerPlus3 on your computer. It will be impossible to remove the LOP infection without first uninstalling MessengerPlus 3. After the computer is clean, you can reinstall it without the "sponsers".

Step 1
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove MessengerPlus 3.


Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.


Step 4
Please delete the following file/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll << File Only

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\file hope curb mode << Whole Folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Transmfcdoptioncast << Whole Folder
C:\DOCUME~1\Olivia\APPLIC~1\CAMPCO~1 << Whole Folder with name beginning with CAMPCO

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.


Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.

Okay I did everything you said, but I could not find messengerplus 3 on the computer. When I go to add delete programs its not there? The problem I have now is when I double click internet explorer it comes up empty - should be msn. When I right click and open internet properties - it looks different -it only has three tabs (general, shortcut, compatibility). "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" is shown as a target under the shortcut tab. Here is my HJT log and thanks again……….

Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.


Step 3
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Lisa\APPLICATION DATA\CAMPCO~1 << Whole Folder with name starting with CAMPCO
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\file hope curb mode << Whole Folder

C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll << File only

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.


Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.

Okay I did everything but could not find C:\Windows\System32\toolbar.dll.
Everything seems to be working fine on my wifes user profile. My daughter's internet explorer comes up blank and I cannot set msn as the startup. When I right click the icon it looks different. It only has 3 tabs (xp should have more tabs?): General, shortcut, compatibility. On the shortcut tab there is a window box called Target. This box has the following: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe". Iexplore was the virus search engine I wanted to get rid of. It won't allow me to change anything. Here is the hjt log. That log is clean. :) On my computer, when I right click the Internet Explorer shortcut and click properties, it has exactly what you are describing. Please post a HijackThis log for your daughters account.

:) That was my daughters. I think I got it figured out now. Thanks for all your help… will let you know how everything is working. Hopefully we can keep it clean. Thanks again.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'


I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
