Hey guys,
When my computer starts up I get an error message saying "C:\Windows\msbbhook.dll" module could not be found. Also, I cant change my homepage, it allways defaults to www.searchweb2.com, which is really annoying. Here is the log file.

Hello robbo_23, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. Since you have made a common mistake I will mention it hear to help you and in the hope others who read this can avoid doing this. First, when we look for threads to help in, and please understand the various infections indicate who can help, if we are not trained or comfortable with your infection, we pass it over until someone more expert in that area gets to it. When we see a number one, which is what occurs when you bump your post, we assume that someone is working with you and pass that post. One of our Administrators has posted this at the top of the HJT area: What To Do When You Have No Response In 5 Days?
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=31622
We are receiving many, many posts and some will get missed, but if everyone who had waited this long would follow these directions, then they have a much better chance of receiving help and not being passed over as those who bump and are passed because we think they are being helped. Thanks for letting me post this here to help you and perhaps others.

Now on to your log, and you do have some nasty infections and I will help if you still need it. Please follow these directions: Here is a little information so you will be more aware of what has gotten on your computer as we remove it, these links will provide the information.

Now you see you are badly infected and this is going to take work on both of our parts to rid you of it. You can also see why a lot of folks passed it over as it is a complex repair. I could break it down in pieces, but I am going to give it to you at once. You must make sure to do the process in the order it is posted. Keep notes if questions come up and for feedback to me when you post. If you still wish to proceed this is how we will start:

1) Your HJT.exe needs a folder around it so it can store logs and backups for safety, use the links provided and fix this first. Very important in the event of an error being made. I have also included a video if it helps.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html
http://www.spywareaid.com/index.php?file=svideo&id=1

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

3) I have supplied two links, use the infromation to uninstall the LOP toolbar
http://home.vcn.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=366
http://www.free-web-browsers.com/remove-lop.shtml

4) Use the information in the following Symantec link to uninstall the WinTools/Huntbar infection. Read the instructions carefully then download and run the tool. This is the easiest way to do this.
http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/adware.huntbar.html

5) Open Add Remove programs and look for any programs you did not put there, uninstall them. Be sure to uninstall LimeWire.

5) By now you are familiar with the bad stuff, open Task Manager then under the Processes Tab, end process on any programs that are there you did not put there, including these:
C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe

6) Open Hijack this and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Let's check for trojans, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks heaps, robbo_23
You have missed quite a few of the items that should have been removed. I suggest you return to the top of the instructions and work through them again. You still have the LOP toolbar and you still have WinTools that should have been unintalled from Add Remove programs. I will write up another run through with this new log but it will be a good while before I can get it posted. We have a long way to go. :( pskelley
OK robbo_23, let's try this,

1) Please run through these instructions again and make sure LOP toolbar is totally uninstalled.
Look while you are there in Add Remove Programs look for any item like Huntbar, Wintools, C2Media, any thing strange that you know you did not put there. Uninstall the stuff.

2) Open HJT then click on "Open the Misc Tools section". Under SYSTEM TOOLS, click on "Open process manager". Locate this item, highlite it and click on "Kill Process"
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe

Open Hijack this and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://pquenvayzfm.com/1Esi_CLR//zwU3Cz4D3…3QG1X6yNswB.htm
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tsa2] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa\tsm2.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Waytwo] C:\DOCUME~1\robbo_23\APPLIC~1\PLATFO~1\namesecond.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ModuleUsage - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ennol1531.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: distributed.net client (dnetc) - Distributed Computing Technologies, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

It is important that you enable the hidden files, use these instruction for your operating system:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial62.html

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore, locate these files or folders and delete them. This is very important.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\ >>> This is a folder

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\COMMON~1\tsa\ >>> This is a folder

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\ >>> This is a folder

C:\DOCUME~1\robbo_23\APPLIC~1\PLATFO~1\namesecond.exe >>> Look carefully, this should be a folder also, I do not have PLATFO~1 on my system which is the same. Look in the folder, you will know if it is holding anything that should not be removed. I believe this is part of the LOP infection.

Now close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

Post a new log and we will see where we are. Thanks…pskelley
hey pskelly,
i had trouble with step 2, it said that the process could not be killed. I had all of my exploer windows shut and all of my programs shut down and i still couldnt delete it.
sorry, here is a log file…

robbo_23
Well sir, You did good and we are making progress :P . You should be starting to be aware of what is in the log now. I wish to look at these issues one by one.

1) There is an item in running programs that I believe is bad and it looks like I missed it because there was much to do in the beginning. This is what the item looks like:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\notpad.exe You will see it running just above HJT. It may be a bad item. I need you to investigate. Look closely at the spelling: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\notpad.exe. Notice there is no e in the word. This may be a glitch, but we must investigate. The proper spelling is notepad.exe. Here is what I find about the item with that spelling.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/[removed]
You will have to navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder to look at the one with the incorrect spelling to make sure it is bad. The two items would be very close together, be careful. I looked at the good one on my system and the size for the valid notepad is 64.5 KB (66,048 bytes). Under the version tab the copywrite will show: © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Once you are sure the
item is bad, I want you to read the Symantec information carefully, first to understand how it got there and second to understand the changes it made on your system and what you must do to correct that. You can remove the item once you are sure it is bad by using TaskManager to "end process", we know by now if it is running, Windows won't let us remove it, you can also use the Process Manager in HJT to do this, or you can enter safe mode. Once you have ended the bad item's running process then return to the item in C:\Windows\System32\notpad and delete the bad file.

2) LOP…Since you did not mention the toolbar, I have no way of know if it is gone and the line have just not removed the log. If the toolbar is gone, then use HJT to remove those two line:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.fyigmxuyxcfky.biz/1Esi_CLR//zwU…QG1X6yNswB.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.hffpbtvksiqwpywxjcrawxos.com/1E…1ps7aDr6AQ.html
They have to go, sometimes you have to use safe mode. You can even run HJT two or three times in a row if need be. They are hard to remove. If the toolbar is still on your computer then you have not uninstalled LOP and please let me know. I will suggest other ways to remove the bad program below.
This item is still in the log, you can look at the properties but I am 99.9% sure it is LOP.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Waytwo] C:\DOCUME~1\robbo_23\APPLIC~1\PLATFO~1\namesecond.exe

Alternate way to try to to remove LOP: These are both great programs and I believe both should be onboard.
Recent information indicates the Ad-aware and Spybot both will remove LOP. I see you have Spybot but is it configured and updated. Please use these two links to make sure it is and to download and configure Ad-aware. Run them both as instructed and remove what is suggested.
Spybot:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Ad-aware:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html

Here are the Symantec instructions if it comes to that, they require editing the registry. If you are uncomfortable in the registry make sure you back up the registry before attempting these instructions.

I want to ask a question. This LOP toolbar is often installed along with the Messenger Plus software (nothing to do with msnim or Microsoft) and some folks try to get rid of it by uninstalling Messenger Plus. If you did this, then let me know as I would have instructions for resolving this issue by reinstalling the offending software and removing it properly to take the LOP with it.

3) O23 - Service: distributed.net client (dnetc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe (file missing)in the log until you do reboot. If this item is there and you disabled it to kill the running process it may be gone, if not go back to services to make sure it is still disabled. Here is a little information.
http://www.z123.org/techsupport/xpservices.htm We can try other things, but let's make sure it is disabled and see what happens. It may be that it is just a line of information now that the running program is gone but it is best that we find that out. You can also use Search/files and folder to search for it to make sure it is gone. Search for: iosdt.exe. In the last two logs, the first one showed this: O23 - Service: distributed.net client (dnetc) - Distributed Computing Technologies, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe
and the last log showed this: O23 - Service: distributed.net client (dnetc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe (file missing) so our efforts might just be cosmetic but let's be sure.

Good luck Sir,
pskelley

OK, I am giving some thought and looking for ways to get rid of LOP, it has always been a tough one, I did not get an answer to my question in the last post, about the possibility you may have removed MessengerPlus?? If so it would need to be reinstalled and I have instructions for removing it properly so the LOP goes with it. If this is not the case and you never downloaded MessengerPlus, then something else gave you LOP and we will continue to work on it. I will get back to you a little later but I do wish to address this issue now:

I ran a search for notpad.exe and found a file NOTPAD.EXE-252C88E6.pf. Its location was C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\NOTPAD.EXE-252C88E6.pf (and no i havnt deleted it yet)

CCleaner gets some of the Prefetch stuff, but it must not have gotten that one and there is no valid Notepad that will ever run from Prefetch. This is a nasty item also: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/[removed] Here is some information aboput the Prefetch Folder: http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html Malware writers are using this folder more and more as it keeps us from seeing the item in running processes but it is still showing in your log but when you go to the location you this it would be in, as in this case it is not here. Please go to that Windows\
Prefetch folder and delete everything there. NOT THE FOLDER, just all of the contents. You may have to end process on the item showing in the log: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\notpad.exe and if it will not let you then use safe mode. Just look at anything Windows says was running and can't be deleted in Prefetch to make sure the notpad.exe is deleted.

Thanks…pskelley
OK robbo, Looking over your log I will mention a few things and we will go from there. First I would return to your control panel and edit that email address out of your profile. No doubt there are bots roaming forums looking for just such a validated email address.

1) C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID\raid_tool.exe This look good to me, just want to make sure:
http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/detail.php?id=4521

2) We have this line to contend with, R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.tnufvisikcaer.com/1Esi_CLR//zwU…XQG1X6yNswB.htm
Once you have finished the intructions to this point, then I will give you several sites with LOP instructions. Pick the one that works…lol I should say I really would not download any software, all are questionable and if they really worked they would be very rich. I would try for a manual removal and I would back up your registry before making any changes in it. I would try the Symantec removal first.
http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.lop.html
http://www.spy-bot.net/lop.asp
http://www.spyany.com/program/article_spy_rm_Lop.html

3) This site: http://www.hattrick.org/Common/default.asp which is your startpage is it wanted?

4) Just guessing but it looks like Spybot did not finish running: O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [SpybotSnD] "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe" /autocheck?

5) Let's try to remove this entry: O23 - Service: distributed.net client (dnetc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe (file missing) Like this:

Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open: dialog and click the Ok button. In the Services window locate distributed.net client (dnetc) and click on it to select it. Then click on the Stop button. In the Startup type dropdown choose Disabled. Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.

Next, click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open dialog and click the Ok button. Copy/paste the line below into the command prompt window and press the Enter key:
sc delete dnetc

Now, close the command prompt window.

After a reboot give us a new log to see how it worked. pskelley
hey pskelly, yes i did install msnmesseger plus and didnt uninstall it correctly so i will need some help with going about doing that. sorry :( , robbo_23

good luck sir,
robbo_23
Thanks for the information, I do need a little more:

1) Please read my instructions carefully and if I ask a question do your best to answer it. I appreciate that. I asked about this item and I am sure it is valid, I just want to hear you say that.
C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID\raid_tool.exe

2) You may have told me this but I wish to ask again, were you able to delete the notpad item and were you able to clear the Prefetch folder.

3) Prior to posting the last log, were you able to execute the instructions for deleting the servive and did you restart your computer after completing those instructions? Always remember to reboot after completing instructions so the log will reflect the computer after the instructions are complete. Thanks.

3) If the LOP toolbar that came as a sponser with MessengerPlus is not uninstalled correctly, I have heard that it can be very hard to remove it after that. I am looking for more information but I suggest you try this: Following exactly the same routine you did the first time, reinstall MessengerPlus (important to do it just like you did the first time) Once you have it on board, follow these instructions carefully to remove it. Thanks to Elrond for this fix:

You have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. [color=blue]You must answer "Yes" to this question,[/color] else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed [color=blue](the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important[/color]). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila one nasty infection is gone.

Post a new log when you get to this point. Thanks…pskelley
