Hello loureed101 , Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
thank you for your reply. i already run norton anti-virus, so i'm confident i have no viruses. i also use ad-aware & spy-sweeper. when i heard about HijackThis, i was under the impression my log would be analyzed for specific recommnendations as to what lines could (should) safely be removed.

I will analyze after you perform the suggested I posted.
1. A online virus scan can find items that a resident anti-virus doesn't.
2. There are many different ways to run Ad-Aware and SpyBot. The instructions I gave you are the settings to best find any bad guys.

It's your computer, do what you want.
-i ran CWShredder - "coolwebsearch was not found on this system"
-i then used the eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
2 infections were found nsisdll.dll & chicken.eml, neither could be "cured" both were then deleted
- i then ran spybot & ad-aware and deleted everything they found
-here's the new log generated by HiJack:

I suggest you do this:

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

ALL 016's. They'll come back if needed,

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

click Start>Run type in Msconfig. Look in Startup and uncheck:
Real

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
i did everything instructed in your post. i was unable to delete everything in C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folders. There were files (almost all with the same name) over & over in 10 different folders that could not be deleted. for example: nfl;arena;site=fantasy;prod=opm……..
when i tried to right click on these files the only options available are "open" & "send to".

below is the newly generated hijack file. and as for how the computer is behaving, it seems to take longer to boot up after logging into windows. sorta like one of programs that runs at startup is getting hung up ( seems like Norton anti-virus).

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
it all does seem to be running better. i appreciate the help. my only issue is trying to pull up certain sites within firefox. could i have inadvertenly blocked something. when i try to go to www.nyrr.org i get an error message saying "The file /nyrrc/org/home.html cannot be found. Please check the location and try again." i am able to hit other parts of the site but not the home page (which is my bookmark). i can also hit the home page fime using IE. any thoughts??

my only issue is trying to pull up certain sites within firefox. could i have inadvertenly blocked something

I don't use FireFox. Does it have a Security setting like IE that you can add Trusted Zones? You might have settings in FireFox that is blocking it.
seems to be working correctly after a couple of reboots. again, thanks so much for your help. do i need to close out his topic in some way? if not, i might post again next week for help with another computer. again, no major problem, just would like to clean & speed it up.
back with another log from another computer. i've already run CWShredder, eTrust Anti-virus, spybot & ad-aware.

I suggest you do this:

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {58A83E4F-477A-4A3F-BF9B-B65BC2BD5598} - (no file)
ALL 016's. They'll come back if needed,

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

CleanUp:
Download and run.

You need to update both Windows XP and Internet Explorere as they are both well behind in updates. They are both missing Service Pack 1 which is leaving you open to all kinds of problems.

I DO NOT suggest you go to Service Pack 2, at this time.

Service Pack 1 for XP

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…p1/default.mspx

Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo…p1/default.mspx

Install then Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
