Much slowdown, random popups, all that nice stuff.
I run adaware daily, but it never seems to get rid of everything anymore. I also have fully updated norton, it also doesn't fix the problems.
I hope you guys can help.

Thank you for your time.
Hello narthon, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. Whoa…you have some nasties on your computer. I need to say that Ad-aware and Norton are both good products but that is not enough to keep you safe anymore. We will discuss some freeware programs once you are clean. Please do your best to follow these directions.

1) View this information: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-637.html You can ask your ISP if you wish and if you want the program gone, the instructions are in the information you just read.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

3) These items: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [r37S38i] bascfgex.exe and
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [a0o2RUGmQ] atlml2a.exe do not identify and as such we consider them random named trojans. If you do not know what they are, we will remove them.

4) You have many bad Downloaded Programs Files (016) which makes me think you need to look at how your browser is set to block the bad stuff. I usually give this information once you are clean, review the information in this link to set your ActiveX controls properly.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html

5) Open Hijack this and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

First I neeed you to search and locate where these bad files are:
bascfgex.exe
atlml2a.exe
I believe they are running from either a temp folder or the Prefetch folder. I depend on you to establish the location. If it is the Prefetch, then do this:

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore. First locate this folder: C:\Windows\Prefetch. Open the folder and delete everything in it. NOT THE FOLDER, just the contents. You can choose Edit at the top then Select all to highlite everything then hit the delete key. A few items might not go but since we have stopped the bad stuff from running with HJT, if they are there, they will go.
Here is information about the Prefetch if you need it:
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html

Now locate this one: C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\SYSTEM~1\soap.exe min >>> file and delete it. Close up.

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. We will probably have more to do.

Once the new log is posted and because there were many, let's check for trojans to make sure they are gone. Run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

I would also update your Norton and run a complete system scan with it.

Thanks…pskelley

PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE
When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instruction:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam
Ok, the computer seems to be running better already, but it is probably all in my head.
Some notes first:

1) View this information: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-637.html  You can ask your ISP if you wish and if you want the program gone, the instructions are in the information you just read.

tgkill did not show up in my add/remove list

4) You have many bad Downloaded Programs Files (016) which makes me think you need to look at how your browser is set to block the bad stuff.  I usually give this information once you are clean, review the information in this link to set your ActiveX controls properly.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html

This was right, I think I allowed an ActiveX I shouldn't have.

-TrojanDownloader.OTXloader.A

I actually signed up for this at one point (well, not the trojan, but OTX). I know, stupid.

First I neeed you to search and locate where these bad files are:
bascfgex.exe
atlml2a.exe

I couldn't find these, probably because I manually deleted them when Norton couldn't the other day.

Now locate this one:  C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\SYSTEM~1\soap.exe min >>> file  and delete it. Close up.

Also couldn't find this one.

anyway, here is the new log.

Thank you for your help and time.
Hello narthon, Thanks for all of the detailed feedback. Sorry to have to report that I missed one DPF.

Information about this hostile ActiveX is in the link.

Except for the one I misssed and the one that is not malware that you need to discuss with Comcast, your log is clean of malware. I do want to suggest that if you have a resource problem you have quite a few programs running that could be started via Start/All Programs when needed. If you are happy with the way things are running at Startup ignore this, if not let me know and I will supply you with the information you need to identify and remove these items from Startup. I would also like to say that while you are using HJT to remove sidestep you may also delete any DPF (016 only) that you do not know what is or no longer use. I sometimes remove them all when a tricky item can't be located, you would be prompted to install the .cab file again the next time you visit the site.

Since you are going to remove sidestep and then your log will be malware free, here is additional information to keep you clean and safe.
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

It's your option if you wish to post another log, I would be glad to look at it and answer any last questions I can if needed.

Thanks…pskelley

Norton found nothing, I'll give it another couple days to see if the computer reinfects. Any suggestions on how to improve performance would be good, I'm not too sure on what I can get out of the startup programs. Thank you

Norton found nothing, I'll give it another couple days to see if the computer reinfects. Any suggestions on how to improve performance would be good, I'm not too sure on what I can get out of the startup programs.

1) You have a clean log, don't wait for reinfection. Review the information in the links I provided and be proactive.

2) Once the malware is removed, if you wish your computer to run better, you need to look for things you can do to cause that to happen. Look at your maintenance proceedures to be sure you are doing all you can to help the computer.

3) If you have not been inside in a while, get some canned air and clean the dust out of the fans, etc.

4) While I do not know what programs you use, here are some you may not need at startup.

These are just some of the programs running everytime you boot your computer, I am not suggesting you turn them all off but if you really want to increase your speed this is a good place to look. Try them one at a time and see if everything runs ok without it. You can always start them in Start Programs if you need them.

I would also suggest you look at how much RAM you have installed, WinXp will use all you give it.

Good luck to you
pskelley
I have 512 ram at the moment, which is the most this machine can take. I defrag reguarly, but I haven't cleaned the inside in quite some time, I will do that. I'll also hit those startup items. Thank you again for the advice.
