Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and run it from there in the future ;)

1. Run HijackThis (“Do a system scan only”). Put a checkmark near these lines:

2. Close all other windows and browsers, and hit Fix Checked.

3. Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 frequently during bootup.
Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

4. Delete, in safe mode:
C:\Program Files\NETRAT… << folder which name starts with "Netrat"

5. Reboot into normal mode, make a new HijackThis log, and post it here :)

much, much better. it's an older computer, but still serves our purposes for casual web surfing and homework projects. where would I post some other issues (unrelated to spam) you folks might be able to help me with?

next time they surface, I will do that….thanks once again for all your help! :) I was told by an IT guy in my company that no matter how much we accomplished, these spyware issues will re-surface as the spyware is timed to pop up again after remaining running in the background for a set period. is that true?

Nope. There is one malware which uses the "Tasks" to re-install itself when removed earlier. This is Lop/C2Media, installed by Messenger Plus. There are also other sorts of malware which use hidden installers, so if you remove the infection, it will re-install itself… Special tools are required to get rid of those hidden installers. Anyway, if you don't do something to prevent your system with the earlier mentioned programs (see previous page) you are in a high chance to get the malware again… :)
