I am having trouble with Outlook Express. Can you help? My Norton SystemWorks (under the Antivirus tab) won't let me enable autoprotection - after I change it and save it it reverts back to disabled. Also, it tells me my email shows error and requires urgent attention but I can't seem to do anything about it. All my trojan programs, antivirus, and sypware programs are comming up clean. Is this something Hijack this might be able to help with? Thank you in advance.
Hello Guyl , Welcome to the Forum.

There's a new version of HijackThis.

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now.

Please download this self extracting file to your My Downloads folder or My Received Files (dependent on your Operating System):

http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Click the "Save" button.

Navigate to My Documents>Chose My Downloads or My Received Files folder once inside that folder click "Save".

Now go to the folder you saved HijackThis_sfx.exe in.

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".
Close the WinZip self Extractor window.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [Add Reply].
LDTate, I did what you said and have the log but I can't paste it. I probably just don't know where to paste to. Can you answer this and I'll try to do it. Thanks, Guy
Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [use the Add Reply button below].
I can't find an "add reply" button. There is only a "post reply". When I click post reply I get this box to put the message in and then there is an add reply button. When I follow your instructions I can't paste it. I am trying to right click in this box and the paste but the button is in gray.
Did notepad open and have your HJT log in it? If so, while the log is in notepad, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy>, then in the open area here(post reply) Right Click, select paste. That should put in the in here. Then select Add Reply button
That did it. I had to open the file in notepad. Thanks.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTate, I'm sorry this is so ling in getting back to you but all the scans take a while to run as you know. I ran all three programs you asked. Panda left one that it wouldn't clean up - c:\windows\system 32\ietie.dll. House call didn't show anything. eTrust left two. They are the same except the class name - archive.jar-c9da93a-6bccbdb4.zip>BUG.class. The other is Dummy.class instead of BUG.class. Spybot was clean and Adaware always gets hung up on the deleting process - it won't delete anything. It showed one though - Search-a-lot.com - that was a startup page I was using but deleted it when it said it was fairly high in problems. The biggest problem I'm having is my e-mail. It takes forever to load (by the way I use Outlook Express and for a browser I use Mozilla Firefox). If I click send/recieve and it shows me I am receiving 1 of 10 e-mails, for example, it will deliver one after a long wait and then return an error message, it looks like a bunch of goobly gook. I "x" that out and hit send receive again and repeat the process except now it says receiving 1 of 9 e-mails. After a long wait another message is recieved and the error message shows up. "x" it and repeat. That has been going on for the last couple of weeks to a month. For the last couple of days the e-mails eventyally come through but they don't show the sender or subject and there is no message when I double click the message to view it. Again, I can't seem to attach the hijack log to this message. I'm following your instructions from the earlier post. I'll keep trying. When I right click to paste the paste is in gray so I can't click it.
Did notepad open and have your HJT log in it? If so, while the log is in notepad, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy>, then click Add Reply, that should open a blank page, Right Click anywhere in the open area, select paste. That should put in the in here. Then select Add Reply button
Like last time I forgot to double click on the log itself. Thanks

I suggest you do this:

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
