Browser Home Page Hijacked, Nasty Pop-ups Too

Vroomsearch.com has hijacked our browser home page. After startup, initial opening of IE brings up unwanted homepage and unwanted (sometimes very nasty) popups. Changing home page only works until next start-up. I ran spybot s&d and adware yesterday after updating them. Some issues eliminated but this one still remains. I am aware that we need to upgrade to SP2, but was hoping to get rid of this problem first. Thanks for your help!

Below is my hijackthis log:

Hello jjdal, welcome to the TC.

Please do all the steps in the order they are listed

Uninstall Virtumundo from control panel >> add remove program if listed there

Reboot if Virtumundo is found. If not found just continue.

Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Start the program and then check the I know what I'm doing box.

Move all instances of Osmim.dll (and nothing else), to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button and reboot.

Find and delete the file c:\windows\system\Osmim.dll

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTate, thank you for helping me with this! I apologize it has taken me so long to complete all your suggestions… I have young children and very little computer time. I followed your instructions…

- Virtumundo was not found
- LSPfix removed the specific .dll file you named
- I DID NOT find c:\windows\system\Osmim.dll in the system folder so I moved on to the next step
- I followed the Disk Cleanup steps and rebooted
- CWShredder DID NOT find any thing to remove
- I used TrendMicro HouseCall and deleted the two items indicated
- rebooted and downloaded the versions of spybotsd13 and aawsepersonal (1.5) to make sure I had the right ones
- updated spybot and checked for problems, 6 red entries found and fixed
- updated adaware and performed a full system scan, 29 files deleted (mostly Dataminer stuff)
- recycle bin was already empty
- rebooted and below is my new hijack log (with description of computer behavior following it)

Our browser home page is no longer hijacked (yea!!!). When we reboot it comes up on the home page we set instead of vroomsearch.com. However I noticed some references to vroomsearch.com in the log still. What should I do to remove that? Also, the unwanted "favorites" that were added to our list now stay deleted and do not reappear at start-up. All that is great… However, we are still getting pop-ups (some porn) everytime we start the computer and open IE for the first time. The browser home page opens and then seconds later one to three pop-up adds appear. Then randomly (not too frequently) the pop-ups will appear if we leave IE open, even if there is no immediate activity from us (like we didn't just surf to a new site or open a new page).

Thanks for your help with this. We are very eager to stop being grossed out when we open our browser!
I suggest you do this:

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTate,
I did as you suggested and all appears to be fixed. Thank you!!! The pop-ups are gone entirely and our IE homepage and favorites are staying as we wish them to. Everything apears to be healthy again. Thank you, thank you!!

There are several back-up files in my hijackthis folder now. May I delete the folder? And if you give me the "all clean" then I think I will upgrade to SP2 now.

Here is my (hopefully) healthy log:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

There are several back-up files in my hijackthis folder now. May I delete the folder? And if you give me the "all clean" then I think I will upgrade to SP2 now

.
Yes, you can delete the HijackThis folder. And update to SP2 if you want
Thanks again! Everything is running great now. I have a firewall/anti-virus question for you. We currently have Norton Anti-Virus. I believe that contains a firewall (is that correct?). However our current subscription will run out in the next few weeks and I am curious about the free ones you linked to in your previous post. How, in your opinion, do they compare to Norton, other than the obvious benefit of being free? Thanks, jjdal
